#42. Cosmic Star Heroine (PS4, 2017)

Lots of games try to copy Chrono Trigger. Some do it well like Lost Sphear and I Am Setsuna, some do it absolutely terribly. Still others like Cosmic Star Heroine hit the nail right on the head. This is one of the absolute best at paying homage to CT. I loved every second of this game. They captured the feel of a mid 90s jRPG exactly. Music is great. The sprites and areas are beautiful. Combat is fun and mildly unique. Games like this are why I backed Sea of Stars for the like super deluxe something level. When a company or people want to make a game to pay tribute to the classics and do it with love, you can create magic. It routinely is on sale, I highly recommend it.

#43. Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance (PS4, 2015)

Disgaea is a series that generally gets better with each game. The gameplay evolves and improves. Disgaea 5 is so insanely smooth. This cast is as close to the original as we have got since... the original. Killia is a great lead alongside Seraphina. This game is maybe the most gorgeous sprite work in games... well almost. I have more to say on this series later(Spoilers it features again) but again, I love this series. It is the best sRPG series there is and its not even close.

Dishonorable Mention 2 AKA 4th worst game of all time: Dissidia NT: Final Fantasy (PS4, 2018)

What a festering pile of dog shit. I am not a big handheld gamer, especially as I get older. So I really wanted a console Dissidia. Easy request. Well apparently not. They absolutely massacred my boy. Why is it 3 on 3? Why is there no option for 1 on 1? Where are all the customization and RPG elements? The game is gorgeous and features the usual great scenes between characters, but my god every other thing in this game misses. They had a formula that was great and just completely shit the bed.

#44. Mega Man X (SNES, 1993)

I love the original Mega Man series, and mostly just enjoy the X series, the exception is the original. What a joy to play, X moves so well and the game teaches you how to play with excellent level design. The tracks all slap and the powers are pretty cool. The way the stages all interact is cool too. I thought Zero was a girl for years. I never really loved any of the other X series games.

#45. Grandia (PS1, 1997)

This game is so darn charming. I love the cast and how they interact. They are constantly aloof and way too lighthearted in a very serious story. The look of this game is that classic sprite look and there is some stellar music. All the stuff that applied to 2 with silly spell casting and great combat. Why is the HD Remaster not on PS4!?

I recommend Nexomon Extinction for those who want Pokemon with a story. I am playing it now and honestly it may end up top 100 for me. Its very meta, and I love it. One line early on. "Uh we live in a PS4"

#46. NHL 07 (PS2, 2006)

While I love NHL 94 for simple gameplay and nostalgia, NHL 07 is the pinnacle of the EA series. It was the last game before the skill stick started to really take over and replace simple button inputs. While I have grown to like and accept the skill stick, it was not for me initially. I spent thousands of hours playing this with a friend back in my college days. We played all 30 teams, with rosters as up to date as we could keep them. This involved of course creating Owen Nolan who was not in the game and this he became a huge meme for us as KNUCKLES! Radek Bonk of course led the league in scoring. One player who was shockingly high on the league leaders in scoring was Marek Svatos. He had a 99 in speed and could do the Datsyuk deke without fail for an easy goal.

#47. Final Fantasy X (PS2, 2001)

First up, I hate the cast. They are all obnoxious or super boring/generic. Everything else about this game is stellar. That's about it from me for FFX.

#48. Mega Man 3 (NES, 1990)

So many classic songs. Snake Man is a top 3 Robot Master theme. The stage designs are great, the difficulty is nearly perfect, not as easy as 2, not as hard as 1. Not the best Mega Man game to learn the series with, but a great second quest to go on.

Snake > Spark > Shadow > Top > Magnet > Hard > Gemini > Needle, for songs.

#49. Final Fantasy 4 (SNES, 1991)

I played a ton of RPGs starting in 1996, just one after another for years. Somehow I missed this one til it came out as part of a collection on PS1. Despite being nearly a decade old at that point, this game was still great. Near as I can tell this was the first RPG to actually have a story with some depth to it. Also gorgeous in 1991. Like look at what stuff like Dragon Warrior looked like at the time. There is a lot of great classic FF music in here, tons of cool characters, and some bad ones. I didn't enjoy the DS remake as much, I think because of how it looked. Weird chibi polygon people. I also own 3 copies of this game, which given its many releases I guess isn't so bad. PS1, GBA, DS.

#50. Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten (PS3, 2011)

And so begins the onslaught of RPGs. My top 50 has 25 of them. Disgaea 4 is a very polished game. This series does a lot while looking like it hasn't done much each game as far as gameplay. The story in this game also is strong unlike some other entries in the series. Valvatorez is one of the stronger main characters in the series. The supporting cast is very silly, not much serious to be found here. While many sRPGs feel like they drag and are slow as anything, Disgaea is a series that moves quickly and embraces that you need to do a ton of battles. After you have seen an animation I highly recommend turning them off though, there are some very cool ones, but they just add meaningless time.

#51. Tetris Effect (PS4, 2018)

Before I start, this was again going to be a multi entry. Tetris on Game Boy, The New Tetris on N64 and Tetris DS were each the definitive version of Tetris for me for a time. Tetris Effect is just such a great experience. Tetris is Tetris, I love the game no matter what, but the presentation here is second to none. It sucks you in to a visual and audio experience. As MSG says, its quite moving. I am not sure what else I could say here. I love Tetris.

#52. Dynasty Warriors 7 (PS3, 2011)

This was originally another multi entry with 3 and 4, but 7 is just so much better than every game in the series. They finally went closer to the books for the story and didn't portray Shu as the perfect good guys and Wei as absolutely the bad guys. They pointed out how all sides had a view. 3 and 4 in this series I spent an insane amount of time on in high school with a friend. So props to them, great games. 7 though as I said, changed the presentation so much of the narrative and gave me the view I wanted which is that Wei is actually great. I actually cried when Cao Cao died in this, despite knowing it was coming. They did such a great job telling the story here.

Dian Wei is my go to in every game.

#53. Blitz the League 2 (PS3, 2008)

So I had already written about Blitz and how I love it. Well Blitz the League 2 is perfection. All the over the top tackles and jumps from the original games, but with the violence dialed up to 11 and a story that is so horribly inappropriate. There are trophies for sleeping with 3 hookers or marrying 1. The main draw here for me, beyond the story mode which you can populate with your own roster of created players and design your own jerseys (mine were hot pink, black and neon green, the idea is to blind your opponent) is the injuries. You can target parts of the body on big tackles. So say I hit low, I can snap an ankle or implode a knee. I can sever a spine, or fracture a skull. Or the ultimate one and my favorite. Pop a testicle. It goes into a Mortal Kombat style view of the injuries, its disgusting. I love it. God I love this game. Please bring this series back.

#54. Kingdom Hearts 2 (PS2, 2005)

This game is infinitely better than the original to control. The combat is far more crisp, but also way more silly. This opened the doors for the absolute crapfest of stuff happening that is KH3. Press triangle, 67000 hit combo. Anyway while being far better than the original, it is less charming and also started KH down the path of ... well whatever the story is.

#55. Kingdom Hearts (PS2, 2002)

A game that has tumbled mightily over the years. Formerly a near top 10 game for me. I loved playing this way back on a whim that maybe Disney+FF would be good. The game has just aged terribly and I am much older and cynical and a grump. I tried to play this again in prep of KH3 (which sucked btw) and just could not. I appreciate what it once meant to me but its just not a game I want to ever revisit again. Birth By Sleep was the last good KH game. It doesn't appear on my list but it is for sure more replayable than this. I know I sound negative on this game, it was fantastic in 2002. It was gorgeous, has a great soundtrack, and I do love seeing FF characters being silly dolts.
