I've seen both this and what Shablagoo is describing. It's a messy topic of conversation to say the least. Because there is a lot of propaganda about e.g., China and Soviet. There are naturally also a lot of bad things, and people will be happy to seize on individual comments as proof that someone praises human rights violations because of the gotcha culture of internet message boards (or, I suppose this performative culture is common anywhere where people with differing world views meet).

"tankie" is a buzzword that means either "someone to the left of me" or "someone who approves of the soviet union more than me" and as such is completely based on the politics of the person using the word

like there are centrist dems who refer to Bernie supporters as tankies. it's meaningless

being a professional musician, I have gripes with a lot of music criticism -- partly that a lot of it romanticizes the artist to the point of engaging in Great Man Theory -- but there's still a lot of interesting things to be said about media, and it's worthwhile to consider those things. generally I find a couple critics that I like and follow them on twitter so I know what they're thinking about and when they post their reviews

That is a better argument than what some are pushing. Its arguable whether something subjective is wrong or not, but at least youre not conflating two things that shouldnt be.

if we're taking them at face value, then it's hypocritical to say you're against abortion and then do nothing to actually lower the number of abortions. but they're also not acting in good faith

it really may have been the perfect storm and I don't see any people quite like him rising to power soon, as baffling as it has been. that said, we definitely need to be aware of aspiring despots in the ranks.

Trump's approval rating among republicans is still over 80%

two things pertaining to this:
1. I don't 100% remember the specifics, but I thought the only real restriction was on apparition.
2. the cup was at the center of a maze that was intentionally made difficult to complete. having the portkey there would make it harder for anyone to help him

one thing that's extremely important with online dating: make your profile as you as it can possibly be. filling it with potentially divisive stuff acts as a good filter.

for example: sense of humour is important to me, so I always have a homemade meme as one of my pictures. I usually also include a joke in the written section. if a prospective match doesn't like that, they're probably not someone I would want to date in the first place.

I would argue that democracy just means deliberation between parties that are not operating under the same organization, unless that organization also happens to be the entire citizenry, I guess

see, I think that can be part of it. but it's not the whole picture. I think the parties, however many there are, have to actually operate in the interest of the citizenry. the major parties in Canada do not do this.

I think the citizenry also has to have a similar kind of power when it comes to things like their workplace. Canada does not have this.

it was legal for a long time, in the US, to fire somebody because they were gay. (Probably still is, cant say Ive kept up to date on the protected classes) That doesnt mean you cant be pissed off when a homophobic manager fires an employee because theyre gay.

ok. I never said anyone couldn't. it's still better to focus on the people that can actually rewrite a law to prevent that from happening though

I get your frustration, but it's a big mistake to attribute the abysmal response to this virus to individuals who want to go to a bar.

the fault is with the system dedicated to generating profit at the expense of everything else, and with the people in power who don't care enough about their constituents to do anything about it

if establishments like bars are allowed to remain open, there's always going to be a portion of the population that attends. it's a matter of statistics

diversity (or rather, a lack thereof) is better thought of as a symptom of deeper issues than a problem in and of itself.

representation is good, but making game characters more diverse won't solve those issues. it's more important that the reasons why they weren't diverse in the first place be addressed

Brave New World is not meant to contend with 1984, they portray drastically different societies.

the concept is similar (and it actually came out like 15 years earlier), but it's much more similar to what's happening now

Not unlike people who have not read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
The novel is fantastic, the film bored me.

I've never read One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and I'm not particularly interested in doing so, but I've also never misquoted it while attempting to draw a comparison to reality.

Brave New World and Jennifer Government both take the concept of 1984 and do it much better, and in a more prescient way.

The solution to the obvious and racialized problems of how the term "terrorist" was not to call more white people terrorists, or to push for more laws specific to "domestic terrorism". The state has no problem doing that; we saw all summer Trump using that term to describe people in the George Floyd protests.

yeah it's one of those buzzwords that's actually a neutral term, but it gets used as though it's an inherently negative thing.

it's a lot like "criminal" in that sense.

like, yes, these specific people were terrorists, but that isn't why what they were doing was wrong
