A lot of people in 2016 mistakenly, bewilderingly, but genuinely thought he was a moderate. Increasing the cost of voting, purposefully or accidentally, suppresses votes and is therefore voter suppression. A conspiracy isn't necessary for it to qualify and it also isn't necessary for it to be a concern.

Each and every one of you should be applauding a representative of the people for sounding the alarm about barriers to citizen participation, not calling her stupid. But some have you have been so primed to hate her and call her stupid that you can't let an opportunity go by.

Trump has rolled back protections for LGBT people at every chance he's gotten, in employment, healthcare, education etc.

He straight up banned trans folks from the military

As a black person, I wouldn't interact with a black person who was in favor or repealing the Civil Rights Act or the Voting Rights Act. That's not hypocrisy, that's basic self respect.

The kid needs serious professional help. Letting him "figure things out" won't help if he gets thrown in prison for decades in the process.

He needs a hardcore therapist immediately or he likely has no shot at a good life at this point. He either has no ability to regulate his behavior or learned all the wrong things from his parents. He could have an undiagnosed disorder or brain damage or something. That needs to be discovered and worked on before society throws him away which it sounds like they're about to do, if they haven't already.

Push for a behavioral therapist or psychologist of some kind.

Yes. They laughed at the US because some of them took it more seriously for a little bit, but then they relaxed way too much. These problems aren't uniquely American, they're humans in the 21st century problems. The problem is just the most terminal in America right now.

South Korea is not an island, it's not remote, parts of it are highly dense, and their infection pattern started at the exact same time ours did. Why are they having way less issues than us or Europe? Because they took it seriously from the start and haven't stopped.

This is caused by our culture and our political leadership. As shown in this topic, too many Americans both never want to be told what to do no matter how beneficial, are conspiracy minded, and believe reality is simply a matter of opinion and that disregarding it is being a "free thinker" or "independent"

This has negative consequences all the time, but it's literally life or death with a pandemic that doesn't care about what these people think about anything, it simply uses them as vectors.

Then our leaders model bad behavior and give positive feedback to these toxic mindsets because they're reliant on these same people.

That's how we get where we are.

I have personally assisted people who had no food, who were eating cat food. I think people very greatly over estimate the availability and generosity of social assistance in this country, especially in places like Texas. There are likely thousands of people on social security or disability that have insufficient food. There's many people curled up in a ball due to hunger pains as we speak.

Rather than simply asserting that hunger doesn't exist here because of nebulous "programs" or asserting that children that already exist shouldn't have been born, maybe y'all should help create a country where no one is hungry for any reason?

The guy has had an objectively toxic influence on American culture, public discourse, and political debate. Countless bad things have happened due to this guy. He is a major villain of the last 30 years of this country.

It's not a burden, it's an opportunity. Any politician should cherish the idea that they'll get brownie points for condemning the KKK and Nazis. It's an incredibly low bar. And yet you and Trump act like the weight of the world is on his shoulders or that he's been crushed by something unfair.

And he can't manage to do it without deflecting to Antifa. He knows where his bread is buttered, he knows these people are part of the base, he doesn't want to alienate them so he same thing both sides it. People notice that and they're not going to stop noticing just because it makes you angry.

They were pretty much without exception a positive influence on my life and are some of the keys to expanding the minds and horizons of children, which is a key to social mobility and equity. So yeah, I like them.

I'd say about the time people started farming. As I understand it, that's basically what lead to most of the shitty things people do to each other. If you're living in small hunter-gatherer tribes, you have to treat everyone decently just to survive and there isn't really much reason to fight with other tribes when you can just move somewhere with better food options. Not to mention you'll probably want to intermix somewhat with the other tribe so you don't end up banging your family.

Farming leads to people accumulating lots of resources, which leads to too many people living in too small of an area and people forcing people to work for them, and specializing your food means a bad crop is more likely to lead to famine, and people have more reason to fight over land and resources.

This. Agriculture is what led to monarchy, pandemic disease, class structures, nationalism, all that stuff.

I don't think it's doing anything to or for anyone. Her confirmation is moving forward purely due to raw, undemocratic power. Most Americans already think she shouldn't be appointed now and I don't think this is moving anyone who is not already on the anti-PC side of the culture wars.

We could go round and round on this like the whole internet is doing. I could talk about many indications of why this is offensive and part and parcel of homophobic mindsets, how it's a rhetorical dogwhistle that gets people thinking about preferences vs realities and rights. You could easily talk about how most people on the street probably wouldn't consider this homophobic or even consider it at all. Both would be correct.

We are all tiny specks hurtling through space on a tiny rock. We all have consciousness and don't really choose most of the most important influences on our lives. All we have is each other as far as we know. We therefore have a responsibility to each other to make our 0-100 year stay on this rock as good as it can be. And we owe that to the future versions of ourselves too.

Throughout post-agriculture human history, we have done the opposite of that and run societies where the many worked endlessly to support the few who were only concerned with preserving whatever the order was that put them on top. I think that should be changed in favor of a system based on the equality and dignity of human beings, joined together to create an equitable and sustainable world. That will require a huge shift away from how things have been done and how they are currently being done.

I think if you take these principles seriously, I think that leads pretty directly to being some form of leftist.

People have to go to prison or this wont stop. Purdue Pharma has already pleaded guilty to criminal charges in connection with Oxycontin and then went on to create the current opioid crisis immediately afterwards. People need to lose everything and go to federal prison for decades. These slaps on the wrist have to stop. They know they need to plea now so they can get away mostly unscathed because they'd be rolling the dice with the next administration.

If you had the exact same situation, but replaced the religion with Islam, no one would be hand wringing about whether it's appropriate to bring up her religious zealotry and cultishness. That was an unlikely outcome produced by many many exogenous events. It's unfortunate that it happened. But the shock wasn't primarily generated by the polls. It was due to a nave assumption that America wouldn't stoop that low.

I think we need to move statistics into K-12 education and feature it much more prominently to avoid a situation where people say what pogo is saying in this topic. It's a very common view, it's simply incorrect.
