TopicThoughts on Anita Sarkeesian?
Proto_Spark

I thought she just looked at some video games through a feminist lens. Which should be a perfectly valid way of analyzing media (and is necessary if you want video games to be treated like a real art form) but instead of having a reasonable conversation butthurt snowflakes got way too triggered a girl was after their stuff they took it way too far.

MrMallard posted...
I said this recently and I'll say it again.

The only reason she's as remotely influential to the degree that she has been is because of the stupid fucking chuds who made a game of harassing her. They're the people who made her the face of online feminism. They're the people who shone a spotlight on every little thing she did and put her face on thousands of video thumbnails and her name in thousands of video titles.

Their campaign against her was built on the back of lie after outrageous lie for the sake of pandering to an anti-SJW crowd who had come to see her as the face of the movement, and that in turn led to her taking on a visible role on social media - both to defend herself against the unprecedented wave of harassment and attention she received, and to use what infamy and influence she had gotten to spread her ideals.

Anita Sarkeesian would still have her own fanbase and some degree of popularity without the backlash, but the fact is that she wouldn't be a household name among the terminally online circles who know about her without the Gamergate morons who elevated her to the face of a movement through their behavior. She was targeted because her Kickstarter blew up, sure - for better or for worse she was going to have fans and get attention for what she was doing. But she would never be as relevant as she is today - to the point where topics like this are still popping up on message boards like this - without the gamergaters whose collected disdain for her gave her more of a platform than she ever would have otherwise.

My thoughts on Anita Sarkeesian herself? I don't really care. I don't watch her content, she's not in any of my online media circles, I have no judgements on the content of her character or the content she produces. I understand she fell from grace, and that makes me even less likely to seek her out. I'm not that interested in her as a person.

My thoughts on Anita Sarkeesian as a public figure? The people who hated her the most are the people who made her the most relevant, and I truly believe that the gamergaters who elevated her to such a prominent position despite hating her so much are some of the stupidest motherfuckers on the internet. I fully believe that the proponents of her backlash are the same kinds of people who dropped their Gillette products in the toilet in the wake of that ad, or who (used to) express their discontent with a brand by buying up a bunch of their stock and destroying it on camera as a form of protest. Like, they still got your money and exposure, numbnuts. You're still helping them.

I don't care enough about Anita Sarkeesian as a person or content creator to know or talk much about her. But regardless of whatever the hell her deal is to anyone, I find her fascinating as a public figure, and I doubt I could dislike her more than the people who made her the face of a movement against her will and against the interests of online leftists at the time.

This. She never should've become as big a deal as she did. Hate-culture is one of the most toxic things in the world.

A Quiet Place is pretty overrated, but I think its still good. A dumb post apocalyptic alien movie requires some decent suspension of disbelief and plot contrivances. If you don't like that you really need to find a new genre.

Agreed. The idea that a woman has to give birth in a setting without making a peep or risk dying instantly is pretty bottom tier writing for a horror film.

tbf, the movie had an excuse for that, that's why they had all the fireworks.

There's no way that baby stays quiet long enough to not immediately be murdered though. That's prob why the movie ends about 4 hours after the baby is born.

The fact that its apparently more expensive that Game of Thrones was, I have trouble thinking it will do well enough to be worth the extent (especially if you consider a significant amount of the TLOU fanbase is really mad-toxic)

Everything seems to be well-proven and likely to be good though, so I don't think the question is "will it be good" as much as "will it be good enough to cover its extortionate costs?"

I don't know. I feel like his strongest works are movies like 300 or Sin City where he is directing tightly written scripts that accurately adapt the source material. The further you get into his career, the more he starts writing his own works and the worst the movies start getting.

That's fair, I was thinking more like Watchmen where he completely misunderstands the point of the the story he's adapting, so that he effectively pushes the exact opposite ideas the story was conveying.

Or how he doesn't at all understand any of the DC characters he was put in charge of.

Zack Snyder writing a movie but not directing it is like the exact opposite of what anybody should ever be willing to put money towards.

The man has a long, storied career filled with well directed movies, but every time he touches the writing it falls to shit. How he convinced anybody to put him in a position where they're adapting a story of his but somebody else is directing it is beyond my understanding. Unless, of course, his role as producer means that he's bankrolling the vast majority of it.

I think it would be the opposite, since whenever he's put in charge of adapting someone else's writing (see: like 90% of his filmography) he tends to completely misunderstand the point and push something almost antithetical to the point of the original project. Him just getting to write his own story would probably be better than him bastardizing another popular thing.

Most of these AMAs are done as some kind of promotion for an upcoming film or show or whatever. The celebrities themselves probably don't really know what's going on or what is expected of them besides just answering questions about what's being promoted.

True, but they have been done well before. There was that time Seth McFarlane did an AMA, apparently having not been told what an AMA actually was, and when he learned the mistake, he made another AMA and actually answered everything.

Or when Adam Savage (from Mythbusters) did an AMA, and he was answering questions for like 4 days.

Though to be fair, 99% of the questions to the above weren't "why are you such a POS?"

I know where I live, there's a huge glut in engineers, which means that isn't gonna pay the biggest bucks, and having a bachelors in most sciences will only make you qualified enough to be a lab monkey for basically minimum wage. If you want to do science and get paid, you need at least a masters.

This *is* the con: that college and education are investments that should be aimed towards landing as lucrative employment as possible.
It's the intentional erasure of anything aside from the economic.

The thing is, a lot of college programs are aimed at making employment as easy as possible hence why many universities have things like Co-Op programs or Field Camps or volunteering and networking opportunities. Its just a lot of people don't really do all that (myself included)

There's also like, a stigma against the trades or community college and neither are particularly worse by any means, and there are plenty of people who waste time in college/university when they would be better served elsewhere.

College itself is certainly not a scam, and mostly said by old people who don't want to admit they're wrong about things sometimes (like Bill Maher) and would rather blame the concept of education than them being a pompous ass.
