the existence of privatized services is inherently a threat to the public versions of those services.
Not necessarily.

Like, there being a steakhouse that serves $200 filet mignon dinners isn't a threat to the family of 4 using an EBT card to buy milk, bread, and cereal.

You can't tell people that their ability to live above the poverty line is a threat to those who cannot.

IMO basic levels of necessities such as housing and health care should be government subsidized and available to those who need it. but private enterprise can and should provide additional for those who want it.
But there already is government subsidized housing and healthcare, at least in the US.

What you're really asking for is improvements in those subsidies.

Well, the number one priority for any landlord is to make a profit, not necessarily to make sure people without homes have shelter.

Because they can't make bank off of poor people, they simply won't provide them with housing.

Profit is the main motivator for any business, so I don't get your point?

That's like asking why restaurants make a profit, if all they're doing is providing the public a necessity.

So, what you're basically asking is why does the worst version of a particular thing exists, even though more than a majority of them are providing a service someone couldn't normally provide for themselves?

Yeah, but heres the thing... and weve been dealing with this since BayFormers... these later movies only exist because fans have been carrying the franchise on their own through the lean years. When absolutely no one else gave a crap about said franchise, fans were holding conventions, spending money, and keeping the property in the public consciousness when no one else cared. This is especially true with He-Man fans since absolutely no one cared about the franchise 10 years ago but the hardcore fans. So I always have a problem with people saying they dont owe the original fans anything. Well yeah, they do. Those were the people who kept the torch burning and enabled you to make your present project.
It's an odd conundrum though, as you know there's basically zero chance to renew/reboot/revive an "old" franchise without getting criticism from the die-hards of the original work.

Going all the way back to Tim Burton's Batman. Fans of the Adam West "Batman 66" crapped all over it.

There's very few Reboots/Revivals that are universally praised by fans of the original work.

You're allowed to eat your burger again but it might taste like shit.

I personally don't rewatch things over and over and over. For people who do, that's great, no judgement. Enjoy what you enjoy, I just rarely have the motivation/excitement to revisit. Probably revisiting 80's He-Man would be a major letdown. Seeing modern He-Man in adult situations seemed like a cool idea though and it was cool for those two minutes of screen time. I wanted more from the first five episodes. When people think Masters of the Universe they tend to think He-Man and Skeletor. If you could dig up sales on toys from the show in the 80's it was likely dominated by He-Man and Skeletor. Anyone who thinks this a woke accusation is free to think whatever they want but they miss the mark and are arguing with themself at that point.
But who's to say a straight up sequel that's just HeMan vs Skeletor would be good either? It could be written like crap with potholes all over the place.

Just like if the new Ghostbusters was the original 3 minus Egon. Do people really want to see 70 year old guys chasing ghosts?

Yes, I agree with you on the idea that it's probably better to try and launch a new franchise than revive an old one that will most definitely not be universally accepted, as it's nearly impossible to catch lightning in a bottle twice, but, sadly, no studio is really willing to invest triple-digit millions of dollars on a new idea anymore.

They want to piggyback off the goodwill earned by a brand in its glory years to sell now. When they do that and make changes to the brand people don't like it. They likely bring in new fans no doubt but those fans of the original are looking for more in the vein of the original. When they don't get it they voice their dissatisfaction. It need not devolve into a philosophical debate built on stawmen, name calling and character assassinations. The fringe rarely make up the majority of a viewpoint but that's who gets pushed to the forefront because they're assholes and branding everyone an asshole is a lot easier to cope with than having a discussion.

It's no different than going into your favorite restaurant for your favorite dish and the menu is all different. You might wonder why they wouldn't just create a new restaurant for these new ideas? You may even like the new ideas but here and now you were really craving that burger they were known for and they don't serve it anymore.

These studios are really lazy. There aren't enough new ideas presented. No one goes to McDonalds for a Big Michelle and no one buys a Detective Comic to see Cat Man clawing up Batperson. Maybe it's best to leave the past in the past and present fresh stories and with new character for modern life? That may be the answer but that's not easy money.

My thought on this has always been "Just make it good".

Your food comparison doesn't really hold because these aren't made to replace the originals, just try their best to continue the story.

Them deciding to make GhostbustHERS or Ghostbusters Junior does not mean I'm not allowed to watch the original anymore.

This isn't even technically true, it's not a sequel to the original show. Netflix doesn't have the rights to the original show, just the franchise. Which is why the character designs all had to be tweaked and they don't really directly reference specific episodes. And why none of the original music is in the new show.
All that can be true and it can still be a sequel.

In theory, any story set after the events of the original can be considered a sequel.

Honestly, I think because it initially hit "blue" states first and the hardest, so it was easy for the "red side" to claim everyone was overreacting to it.

It's kinda like how most of the country knows how bad the California wild fires are every year, but unless you're right there, it's kinda "out of sight, out of mind".

And once the Government (both local and national) was making the rules on what people could and couldn't do, and where they could and couldn't go, it then riled up another pocket of the country.

All this says is 'The democratization of music has allowed for people to find their preferred niche content more easily so there are fewer culturally massive artists.'

The movie industry is definitely filled to the brim with derivative bullshit.
Possibly, but still supports the idea that there will most likely not be any "generational" music anymore.

Like, my grandchildren will (most likely) not discover music of the 2020's like I did with music of the 60's, simply because my kids have not, and probably will not, latch on to many bands and stick with them for a decade or so, like my mom did with The Beatles, or my dad did with Stevie Wonder.

I'm 43, and save for a few artists, I basically listen to the same things I listened to from when I was 18-30. But with the turnover of music (especially music that is considered "pop" music) happening so rapidly, my kids will never truly latch on to an artist and seek out everything they put out, like I did with Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam, Wu-Tang, etc.

The days of owning every album and artist puts out, save for the tippy-top performers, are over.

The amount of listenable music has exponentially grown since technology has lead to the democratization of music creation.

Music is just better now than it ever was.
The problem is, we consume SO much content compared to decades past that none of it will have staying power.

It's too the point where buying music, even in digital form, is an antiquated practice.

The days of having 100 records, cassettes, or CDs, or even having 1000 songs on you phone, are over.

People stream their music, and don't really "keep" any of it anymore, so we're constantly moving on to the next one.

I posted something similar about movies. None of the movies that come out now, save for the "franchise" stuff like Star Wars, Harry Potter, and MCU, none of them will turn into "Modern Classics" like so many movies from the 80's and 90's simply because none of them have rewatchability when you stream them once then move on to the next thing. No one is buying DVDs to watch movies over and over again anymore.

Like, no one is going to be wearing "Bridesmaids" T-Shirts 30 years from now like we do with movies like Ghostbusters, Back to the Future, Goonies, etc.

I think it's more a matter of necessity than not being family oriented.

Just the basic idea that a family can't afford to have only one person work while the other cares for their elderly relatives. Also, unlike in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, you could afford a home that sleeps two families, or 8-9 people on 2-3 incomes.

At one time, there were 9 people living in the house I grew up in. It was a 2 family house with a basement. My parents and their 2 kids, my aunt and uncle and their 2 kids, and my grandma.

My parents and my uncle were the only 3 that worked.

I personally think Ms. Pac-Man is the deepest story in gaming history.

>you meet someone
>you fall in love
>you have a child together
>eventually, you die no matter how well you play the game -- leaving behind someone to carry on the legacy after you're gone is as far as you can make it in life
To add, pretty much every day (level) looks the same, but slightly different, save for a few major life events, like eating a really good pretzel.
