Theres really no fighting game franchises left to pull from. Mortal Kombat won't ever be in smash for rating reasons...what is left? Dead or Alive or Soul Calibur are definitely a step down in notoriety. King of Fighters is at least a classic, and Tekken is insanely successful.

If they wanted a Soul Calibur character too, I think they would've just added Yoshimitsu instead and had him pull from both series.
