The problem is once you introduce the concept of state funded journalism you open a can of worms that can never ever be closed.

Journalism has to remain private. What we need to do is regulate low quality information so that it can't be as prolific.

I don't approve of state funded media either. But there needs to be someone investigating wrongdoing and publishing high quality information that helps people make sense of the world. And the marketplace simply can't seem to value that correctly. An informed citizenry doesn't necessarily endlessly raise stock prices.

So there needs to be a community centered, not-for-profit model or the private model needs to somehow be subsidized without giving undue control to the subsidizer. The current path is absolutely unsustainable.

Once a cop gives you the evil eye and thinks you're one of "them" or a danger to him, your life is in his hands. Anything you do can be perceived as an attack. Resisting is an attack, moving to comply is an attack, staying still is an attack. The only reason you don't end up dead is because of the cop's mental state, it has little to do with you once it gets that far.

That's what all the "just comply" MFers need to understand. Cops enter an "I'm gonna shoot" mode and your life is forfeit from that moment until they recover their wits.

No agents of the state should be walking around with that power to execute based on fear or anger.

Trans folks should be oh soooo grateful for wonderful allies like Perascamin who are so quick to accept the idea that trans people should be legally and categorically excluded from parts of social and economic life. And that the worst thing that could happen would be for trans people to have feelings about being excluded.

With friends like that, who needs enemies? If we're establishing the principle that discrimination against trans people is a-okay, so long as the given reason is protecting some other group, that's going to be weaponized to predictable effect. You can use that same reasoning to justify banning trans teachers to protect kids, banning healthcare to protect kids, banning trans people from bathrooms to protect kids and women. This isn't even a slippery slope or a parade of horribles, this is all stuff that has already been tried or implemented.

Public-sector unions shouldn't exist, at least not in the same form as private-sector.

All workers have the inherent right to organize to advocate for themselves, even if the public really really needs them. Employers always organize, so employees must have some ability to do so as well.

And in large part, the public sector unions don't exist in the same form. Many can't negotiate over wages or strike, they can only discuss benefits and working conditions.

It's true that this doesn't matter at all. But they understand that politics flows downstream of culture and they're trying to and succeeding at turning cancel culture into a rallying cry and opposition to it into an organizing principle. It's pretty much what they have left when their racism and plutocracy becomes less popular. But the issue is that we might get the kind of politics that flows from obsessing over never holding anyone accountable for bad things. This is a very tragic situation and it's horrible that you lost a friend TC. My condolences and I hope you and his whole extended circle of loved ones can find peace.

Still gotta say that some of the responses in this topic are real creepy and concerning. There's a weird complex that's been built up around cheating where people treat it as a war crime or something. It's bad, it makes people feel bad and insecure. I have lived in CO my whole life, and the 100% mail in voting is super easy, but only a handful of states do that. I wouldn't call the GA law a "Jim Crow" law just because they don't want to switch to 100% mail in like CO.

I see the confusion. It's a Jim Crow law because it's a Jim Crow law, not because they aren't switching to be like Colorado. The law made it harder to vote in ways that surely would have violated the Voting Rights Act if preclearance was still around. Hope that clears stuff

Actual divisions exist. People talk about unity and the media/politicians dividing us as a way to cover that up. This country is largely divided along the lines of race, class, and geography. Anyone who tells you otherwise is probably trying to get you to ignore number one and especially number two of those.
