The landlord isn't entitled to being paid for his services aka housing, but is forced to keep the non-paying tenants and still has to maintain the space, pay utilities, mortgage and so on.

The tenant who can't pay is entitled to free housing.

Suikoden 2 does this well.

When you fight Neclord it's immediately obvious you can't win, you can't do any damage and he hits hard.

But when you fight Rowd it looks like you're supposed to lose but you can definitely win, it's just very difficult. You even get a reward, though the story doesn't change.

I'm downloading FFXII off of Game Pass, only FF game I ever played was 7, tried 8 and hated it and never touched another one. It's free and i'm kind of in the mood for a RPG so i'm gonna try it for an hour and likely hate it but we'll see.
