they were stuck upside down for about half an hour:

https://streamable.com/pxkhea

Emergency crews in Oregon rescued 28 people Friday after they were stuck for about half an hour dangling upside down high on a ride at a century-old amusement park.

Portland Fire and Rescue said on the social platform X that firefighters worked with engineers at Oaks Park to manually lower the ride, but crews had been preparing to conduct a high-angle ropes rescue if necessary. All riders were being evacuated and medically evaluated, and there were no reports of injuries.

One rider with a pre-existing medical condition was taken to a hospital for further evaluation as a precaution, Oaks Amusement Park said in a statement posted on social media. Medics released all other passengers.

The ride, called AtmosFEAR, operates like a pendulum, with the capacity to swing riders completely upside down.

Chris Ryan and his wife, from nearby Gresham, were at the park for his birthday. He told The Associated Press in a Facebook message that they had just been planning to ride AtmosFEAR when they saw it was stuck and heard people saying, Oh my God, they are upside down.

They decided to walk away because of how scary the situation was, he said. They eventually got on the Ferris wheel and heard a loudspeaker announcement that the park was closed and that people should evacuate.

When the ride stopped, park staff immediately called 911 and emergency responders arrived about 25 minutes later, the park statement said. Park maintenance workers were able to return the ride to its unloading position minutes after first responders arrived.

Portland Fire said about 30 people were on board. The amusement park statement said there were 28 riders.

The ride has been in operation since 2021 and has not had any prior incidents, the park said. It will remain closed until further notice. The park said it would work with the rides manufacturer and state inspectors to determine the cause of the stoppage.

We wish to express our deepest appreciation to the first responders and our staff for taking prompt action, leading to a positive outcome today, and to the rest of the park guests who swiftly followed directions to vacate the park to make way for the emergency responders to attend to the situation, it said.

Oaks Park first opened in 1905. Its website says it offers a uniquely Portland blend of modern thrills and turn-of-the-century charm on a midway that has delighted generations of Northwesterners.

if you haven't checked it out yet, I recommend the Interview with the Vampire TV series on AMC.

it takes a bunch of liberties from the source material, but Anne Rice, when she was alive, was involved with it, and her son is too (they're executive producers).

anyway, I think it's really good, and it's on its second season, with about two or three episodes left.

this is a guilty pleasure, but it's also popular - Power. the main series ended years ago, but it has a few spinoffs, which I also like.

also, even though the animation isn't on point, one of my favorite webtoons has been adapted to anime (10 episodes are out right now) - Viral Hit/ Kenka Dokugaku.

it's about a poor, bullied kid, who joins YouTube, and his gimmick is fighting bullies. it's an action-comedy.

lastly, another anime - The Fable.

it's about a top assassin and his partner, whose boss wants them to lay low for a while without killing.

it's a comedy, too. I only read the manga, but I hear the anime series is worth checking out.

Human missions to Mars could be at risk after new research revealed that long-duration space travel can impact the structure of astronauts kidneys.

Samples from more than 40 space missions involving humans and mice revealed that kidneys are remodelled by the conditions in space, with certain parts showing signs of shrinkage after less than a month in space.

The findings could jeopardise plans by SpaceX and Nasa to send crewed missions to Mars in the coming decades, with SpaceX boss Elon Musk recently claiming that it could be possible within the next 10 to 20 years.

Scientists at University College London (UCL), who carried out the study, said that microgravity and galactic radiation from space flight caused serious health risks to emerge the longer a person is exposed to it.

Future missions to Mars were not ruled out, though the scientists said that measures to protect the kidneys would need to be developed to avoid serious harm to astronauts. Methods of recovery could also be introduced onboard spacecraft, such as dialysis machines.

We know what has happened to astronauts on the relatively short space missions conducted so far, in terms of an increase in health issues such as kidney stones, said Dr Keith Siew, first author of the study from the London Tubular Centre, based at the UCL Department of Renal Medicine.

What we dont know is why these issues occur, nor what is going to happen to astronauts on longer flights such as the proposed mission to Mars. If we dont develop new ways to protect the kidneys, Id say that while an astronaut could make it to Mars they might need dialysis on the way back.

We know that the kidneys are late to show signs of radiation damage; by the time this becomes apparent its probably too late to prevent failure, which would be catastrophic for the missions chances of success.

You cant protect them from galactic radiation using shielding, but as we learn more about renal biology it may be possible to develop technological or pharmaceutical measures to facilitate extended space travel.

The research was detailed in a paper published in the journal Nature Communications.
