If you took X-Com Enemy Unknown and turned it into a generic fluid 1st or 3rd person shooter, because the turn based mechanics were "bad" due to being clunky and awkward you've fundamentally missed the point on why that game was so popular in the first place . The awkwardness, sound and level design bleeds into everything. The "Monsters" feel more like wind up toys. James feels like he has no control despite constantly making choices. A simple change that makes smushing enemies easy and fun has a profound effect on everything else because there's more to SH2 than Martian Gothic or God of War 2 or Resident Evil 5. The jank is fundamental to the game, plot, atmosphere, James and the enemies. Arguining whether this was devs intention or happenstance is irrelevant. May as well ask if Dave Lister's drunk trick shot when playing pool with planets was intentional or not. It's not even the only game this is true of. Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Morrowind, Oddworld Abe's Oddysee. Just look at the fundamental difference that was made between Morrowind and Oblivion when swinging your weapon now hits 100% of the time. He's not Kratos , he's not even Chris Redfield You're just turning it into a generic game and then what's the point of remaking it. Even something like the awkward, stilting voice acting - which I do think works very well - is almost assuredly a happy accident rather than intentional direction. I agree that you don't get it. Other than that I completely disagree. SH2 looked great and still looks great. The HD version just looked worse and this looks worse. I can't defend the puzzles of the OG but everything else is well designed. Combat is awkward, clunky, not fun and most of all avoidable. It's not supposed to feel fun to beat up monsters. The monsters themselves are (mostly ) suspiciously feminine, don't seem all that bothered about you. It's all about feeling idolated, trapped and alone without feeling like youre being heoric for doing do. Between the goat sound design, excellent camera angles good level design and great music, it all comes together to make the best horror game ever. It's full of fantastic visuals and takes full of advantage of the medium of gaming to make the player/environment take story actions while using cutscenes largely to raise more questions than they answer The entire thing is a metaphor for And it does this without saying a word directly while other horror games were "Shoot the zombie military experiment with the rocket launcher " and "quick we must escape Mars" "Man look how easy and fun it is to beat those now generic monsters in this now generic environment! It's now more like Resident Evil or Last of Us or Alone In The Dark or Evil Within or Alan Wake or Daymare or Days Gone..... except worse than all of them!" is not a good thing SH2 used the limitations of the PS2 to its advantage to create atmosphere . The game is a straightline and several of the maps are just a narrow corridor with fancy backgrounds. There is no open world to explore like the previous games. Even the secret areas are found by clicking on the airship map or by going into the one side path on the corridor path. Compare that to Daguerreo, Mognet Central, Quans Dwelling, Chocobo's Lagoon/Air Garden/Paradise and the various chocobo treasures, friendly creatures you find from exploring in FFIX (I love FFX before people start yelling at me) FFXII seemed to go out of it's way to make the world less of a corridor while still not having a world map, then XIII went "FUCK IT!
