#047 – Mega Man X (SNES)
The most genius invention of the Mega Man series’ developer is the first entry and best entry to the Mega Man X series. I have NEVER played and replayed a Mega Man (both Mega Man and Mega Man X) game as much as this . Before playing Mega Man X, I was one of those fans who was getting really tired with the repetitive Mega Man games on the NES. I frankly didn’t expect Mega Man X to be all that different but then for the first time since Mega Man 2, I was totally blown away by another Mega Man game. It was Mega Man X on the SNES. Not only is Mega Man X more advanced in the side scrolling shooting department but it has its fair share of platforming as well. Mega Man X himself (the Hero) can learn a lot of unique skills this time which makes the game have a lot more variety than the normal Mega Man games. There are a number of health and energy upgrades which makes revisiting previous levels worthwhile and some of the upgrades are fairly tricky to get. Mega Man X also has my favorite levels (w/ terrain changes) in the Mega Man series and ALL of the Maverick bosses in this game are very well done unlike the sequels following it. Mega Man X is simply an outstanding game overall and the best Mega Man game I’ve ever played.

Whatever happened to Chrono Break?

But anyways my expectations for a new Chrono game is about as high as my expectations for a new Final Fantasy game. So yeah. Don't really care.

BTW Tales of the Abyss is awesome and you might like it even if you didn't like Symphonia that much but it all comes down to a matter of choice. The main character might annoy you depending on your tolerance against bratty snooty loudmouths.

^Its alright man. Its just that topics over here purge so quickly. I'd hate to restart this topic w/ all the write-ups now that I'm very close to the end. Seriously though, I did not know what I was getting myself into haha. Thank the stars I'm not busy with work so I can hog gamefaqs during my work hours. I'll try and finish this list within 1 or 2 weeks before I get loaded with work again.
Anyways we're having a national holiday here in Bhutan so I won't be posting any new write-ups until Thursday.

#048 – Chrono Trigger (SNES)
One of the best RPGs of all time yet one of the most overrated. It’s true that CT took a genre turning stale and reinvented it into something different. It’s true that CT eliminated random encounters and made it adapt well with a more realistic style of encountering enemies. It’s also true that CT has some of the most recognizable faces from any RPG. This game quite frankly has everything and if it were called only the best SNES RPG, I wouldn’t dare call it overrated. But many people hail it to not only be the best RPG ever but also the best game ever. I think its a little more credit than it actually deserves. Granted there are many games treated like CT but I feel CT doesn’t quite deserve the monster credit it gets. Here’s why: The writing in CT (and any SNES-era RPG) is too bland to make a story truly epic. The story in itself is very impressive but the presentation, in which it draws the gamer to make them really care, just isn’t there. And the other thing, character interaction is virtually non existant except when the team needs to do something to make the plot advance (Most games from this era are like this and it can’t be blamed). These things and the fact that the main story in CT is extremely short for an RPG makes it far from being the best game ever.
Now the text above may seem as if I hate CT. This is far from the truth. I love CT. It is one of those RPGs with extremely high replay value and some of my favorite characters (even though they don’t have enough development) are in it as well (Frog, Magus, and Robo). The soundtracks in CT are the absolute best in its era. Hell it’s still one of the best to this day (Frog theme, Lucca theme are my favorites especially). Uncovering all the endings in CT is also one of its strongest points since CT has a LOT of different endings. CT is certainly not the best game ever but it may very well have been the best of its era.

#049 – Paper Mario (N64)
And here it is… my favorite Mario RPG game. Paper Mario was released in the dying days of the Nintendo 64 but it almost brought a nearly dead console back to life with its sheer charm and beauty. The paper cut-out styling of the characters is brilliant and it gives you the feeling of being inside a magical storybook. Paper Mario’s story revolves around the cliché Bowser takes Princess Peach hostage with a little twist this time. This time the sacred Star Wand is stolen and Princess Peach’s castle (along with her) is taken hostage. Bowser also receives seemingly invincible powers and pummels Mario this time. It is when Mario recovers from the beating he took, where the game really begins. Yes! There’s Luigi this time and a lot of familiar faces from the Mario series and yes Mario can jump in this game as well. Paper Mario has a charming turn based battle system which doesn’t really have that much depth but it fits the style of the game. Paper Mario is also a very simple RPG but even with its simplicity it has the unspeakable Lunar SSS-like charm, add that with nostalgic faces from the Mario series and a terrific world of Mario and this becomes easily the best RPG on the N64 and one of the most charming games of all time.

#050 – Silent Hill 2 (PS2)
SH2 is what any horror artist wishes to achieve as the end result. This is one of those game which I had a lot of hype for before I started playing it and one of those which totally lived up to the hype. SH2 is the very definition of Survival/Horror. It has some of the most memorable characters in the genre, some of the creepiest areas and the most recognizable monster of the Silent Hill series, the Pyramid Head. Combine those things with one of the best overall stories in gaming and we have the best Silent Hill game and one of the best games of the survival/horror genre. SH2 has a very creepy and disturbing storyline which can haunt you even after you finish the game. This time the story doesn’t have any of the cult crap from SH1 and it follows the tragic life story of James Sunderland. The enemies in SH2 are also representative of James’ dark innermost feelings. Those dark feelings manifests itself in the form of grotesque and disturbing looking monsters in the haunted town of Silent Hill. SH2 also does the unthinkable and surpasses its predecessor in atmospheric tension and creepy-ness of the areas. I had the scare of my life in a certain bathroom in one of those areas, be really careful there.
Even being at the pinnacle of Survival/Horror, SH2 still has its flaws. First of all, ammo is plenty in this game which makes it too easy. This game is very generous with ammos and there aren’t nearly as much enemies you can waste ammo on unlike SH3. And second, the VA is pretty bad at times. It is not the worst but it certainly could have been better. Apart from that SH2 is what a true horror game should be and it has easily the best story from any of the Survival/Horror games I’ve come across.

Whew. I'm finally at the Top 50 and its getting more and more difficult to keep the write-ups non-repetitive. But from here on out, I'll be writing up on my favorite games so I hope it gets easier.

#051 – Half-Life 2 (PC)
And here it is… my favorite FPS game of all time. I was already a huge fan of the first Half-Life but the 2nd installment totally outdid it. Now it may just be my taste in FPS but ever since the release of Half-Life 2, it was the FPS game I used as a measuring stick against the later releases. And quite frankly none of them have surpassed Half-Life 2. Call of Duty and Halo most certainly couldn’t. Now I’m not that huge of the FPS genre and my knowledge is certainly limited in that department but from the ones I’ve played. Half-Life is certainly my favorite one. Perfect Dark and Goldeneye are the only ones which come close. As for the game itself what can I say? Half-Life 2 has improved graphics, storyline, presentation and gameplay than its already good-in-all-those-things predecessor. However the story in Half-Life 2 isn’t spoon-fed to you. Interacting with the NPCs will be half the source of the game’s storyline and once you uncover the whole story it is pretty darn good. Half-Life 2 also introduces vehicles. Yep, Gordon can now ride buggies and airboats. The gravity gun is also part of what makes this game really fun. It is a gun which can push and pull certain objects. It is essentially used in solving puzzles and advancing to the next area.

#052 – Perfect Dark (N64)
I’d rather call this game Goldeneye 2. No I’m kidding. It’s true that Perfect Dark has the same gameplay mechanics as Goldeneye but many people forget this one minor detail. IMPROVEMENT. Perfect Dark is like an evolved Goldeneye. The shooting mechanics, auto-aiming, and just about everything is an improvement. Not to mention you get a wider variety of weapons (and better ones I might add) and a higher level of challenge than Goldeneye. Believe me when I say this, beating Perfect Dark on hard mode is really hard (much more so than Goldeneye). Now as far as levels go, I’d still say Goldeneye has the better and more memorable ones but Perfect Dark has more variety in the objectives and is overall more fun. The story in Perfect Dark although not too great is one of the more decent ones from the FPS genre. When I first played and beat Perfect Dark during its release date. I used to call it the ‘perfect’ game. It’s definitely not perfect if you compare this game with FPS from this generation but during its time it certainly was. Because of its brilliance at the time of its release and the amount of hours I’ve put in on it, Perfect Dark remains my second favorite game from the FPS genre.

#053 – Tales of the Abyss (PS2)
I will be very honest here. Initially I didn’t expect much from Tales of the Abyss. I know the Tales series was finally revitalized with the release of Tales of Symphonia but that was on a different system. And the one Tales game I played on the PS2 (Tales of Legendia) left me utterly disappointed. The fact that I didn’t really expect anything out of Tales of the Abyss may have been a huge factor in me enjoying the game immensely. But don’t you just love that feeling? The feeling when you’re caught off guard by a game you thought wouldn’t be all that great but it turns out to be much better than you expected. Now the Tales series has always been known for its unique action-based battle system and its depth and quality in the gameplay department. Tales of the Abyss shows how the series has evolved and brings so much more to the gameplay than any of its predecessors (including Symphonia). Now the gameplay isn’t the only good part about ToTA, I found the story just as appealing. Now the story follows Luke fon Fabre, a young and spoiled aristocrat. Right at the start you know something is mysterious about Luke and that’s what basically the story of ToTA revolves around. But trust me there is enough character development and good writing to make a seemingly cliché story very enjoyable. Tales of the Abyss may just be the most underrated RPG on the PS2 because it doesn’t get nearly as much recognition as some of the RPGs on the PS2 and not nearly as much as Tales of Symphonia or Vesperia.

#054 – Pokemon Gold Version (Gameboy Color)
Say what you will about Pokemon. It doesn’t change the fact that the first two games are not only revolutionary but one of the most addicting games of all time as well. Hating on Pokemon is considered ‘cool’ everywhere on the internet but no matter how childish the artwork may seem, Pokemon Gold is a damn good sequel to arguably the best handheld game EVER. Now I’ll agree on the fact that the story is way too simple and generic (And it is almost the same for the rest of the series with little variation) and the puzzles are infact child’s play but the Pokemon series isn’t well known and popular for its storyline. It is the depth in the ‘gotta catch em’ all’ (catching the variety of Pokemons around the world) department and some of the strategizing required in various battles.
Pokemon Gold however is VERY similar to its predecessor BUT it is smoother in various areas and was generally an automatic improvement to many fans (because of the color) during the time. I’ve played Pokemon Gold like hell on my GBC and it’s the only game on its system (which has a pretty weak library) which I’ve played as much if not more than games on major systems at the time. One negative thing about the Pokemon series is the fact that every new installment is basically the same game with a better graphics and a few minor tweaks. That is the reason why I stopped playing the Pokemon series.

Here's the last write-up till Monday. Please keep the topic bumped so that it doesn't purge. I may not be able to access gamefaqs at all for the next two days.

#055 – Goldeneye 007 (N64)
A top ranking list is never complete without this revolutionary game which broke grounds in the FPS genre during its time. Goldeneye isn’t just a game, it’s a game transitioned from a movie. Most Movie-games are known to be average at best but Goldeneye did the unthinkable. A Movie-Game is now one of the best games ever in the gaming industry. Infact I’ll go on to say that game has overshadowed the movie every way I look at it.
Now Goldeneye follows the basic norm of an FPS in single player i.e complete certain objectives to complete the mission. However there are a LOT of missions in this game and in order to unlock the true final level you have to do the incredibly challenging task of beating every single mission on hard mode. But from my experience I’d say the learning curve in Goldeneye is pretty simple and you can master the game with little practice and memorization of enemy placements. Now the change is modes aren’t just difficulty curves but more objectives are added in the harder modes as well. So in order to experience the true single player campaign of Goldeneye, start playing the game on hard mode right from the start. Now single player isn’t the only great feature in Goldeneye, the multiplayer is just as good if not better. I can still recall the countless times I’ve spent playing multiplayer in this game.

Skipping out on IV means skipping out on the Island Nations storyline. I suggest you at least give it a try in order to experience the whole Suikoden world before jumping to Suikoden V. Suikoden IV isn't a very long RPG either. Even though Suikoden IV is a bad Suikoden game, it isn't unplayable or anything. Just don't expect anything amazing when you play that game (I made that mistake).

#056 – Suikoden V (PS2)
The feel of Suikoden is finally back after it was totally absent in the abysmal Suikoden IV and the different but still good Suikoden III. Suikoden V is the longest Suikoden game from my experience but is definitely a worthy Suikoden game which even surpasses one of its renowned predecessors (Suikoden I). The characters and story is what makes a Suikoden game so special and if I may say so Suikoden V has arguably the best storyline in a RPG from the PS2 generation. I’m not kidding. Like its predecessors the story’s strength doesn’t lie in having complicated twists and turns which only makes sense at the end or having multiple plot twists. It lies with the relatively simple story (not too simple) but not cliché story which is basically written with such brilliance that it makes the gamer care. Suikoden V’s story isn’t similar to its predecessors but it has a very similar feel, the feel of wanting to continue on without stopping. And trust me there are more than enough emotional and heartwarming scenes in this game to make you remember it for a long time.
Gameplay-wise Suikoden V isn’t really anything special. It follows the same basic Suikoden formula with a few tweaks and minor improvements. However let me warn you that this game is really very easy. If you can distribute your skill points to the right areas for certain characters you can easily destroy any enemy in this game (including the last boss) with relative ease. The Stars of Destiny in this game however are rather hard to recruit because of the strict timeframe so I suggest using a guide if you want all 108 SoD in a single play through. Suikoden V has some of my favorite characters in the series (Georg, Ferid, Kyle, Lyon, Miakis), some of my favorite scenes, and a great final dungeon (and many good dungeons in general). This game is without a doubt a worthy Suikoden title.

1) Final Fantasy III. Specifically the NES version. It seems a lot of people here played the terrible DS remake and consider "Final Fantasy III" to be one of the worst games in the series because of it, which is a shame since the original is pretty easily my favorite RPG on the NES and rests solidly around the middle of my personal FF rankings.

This post is so true.

#057 – Xenosaga Episode III: Also Sprach Zarathustra (PS2)
I’ve already explained the meat of the Xenosaga series in one of my previous write-ups so I’ll get straight to the point here. Xenosaga III is quite easily my favorite episode from the trilogy. Not only did the Xenosaga series get back on track after the minor bump in Xenosaga II, Xenosaga III outdid the first which I thought was already a great game itself. Now Xenosaga III’s story focuses more on Shion this time and is done brilliantly. The flashback scenes and the Voice Acting are also so damn good that it makes me wanna replay the whole series right now ^_^. The battle system IMO is good but nothing special but it has improved a little over the 2nd episode (it had a pretty good one too IMO). All in all Xenosaga III is an epic end to one of the best RPG series I’ve ever come across. The 3rd episode remains on top as the most memorable one.

#058 – Shadow Hearts: Covenant (PS2)
Now how many RPGs have you seen being set in the early 1900’s? The 1st Shadow Hearts game was my first and the 2nd SH follows suit. For those who don’t know already. SH: Covenant is the second entry to a pretty successful RPG franchise on the PS2. I barely remember the first Shadow Hearts game since it’s been quite a while but as far as I remember it was pretty decent. Covenant on the other hand is a different story. It was one of the most memorable experiences I’ve had in an RPG. Now Covenant is praised mainly for its gameplay and its unique battle system but I personally loved the story and its presentation just as much. The unique set of characters are also among some of my favorites in an RPG. Each character here is so distinguishable and has their own share of character development. Then there are the cutscenes which are done magnificently. Even the dungeons in this game are designed superbly and honestly its hard thinking about a flaw for this game as I’m writing this. Let’s see… oh yes SH2 has an inferior set of soundtracks compared to its original which has fantastic music but that’s about the only thing SH1 holds over Covenant. Explaining the magnificent mechanics and the depth of the gameplay would take ages but I’ll just point out the basics of the battle system. Basically you have an attack ring where you must time the attack when it passes through the ring and depending on your accuracy you can either have a critical attack or a normal hit. I know that was bad explanation but you should try it out for yourself. It was insanely addicting for me ^_^. Oh and Shadow Hearts 3: From the New World is also pretty decent although it fails to live up to the brilliance of Covenant. If you liked both Shadow Hearts games then you should at least give the third one a try. Overall Shadow Hearts is undoubtedly one of the best and most consistent series on the PS2.

#059 – Devil May Cry (PS2)
The first DMC game is still one of my favorite action games and one which I’ve replayed multiple times. DMC1 introduces Dante, the trash talking, cocky yet awesome demon slayer although he is half-demon himself. DMC1 has limited story segments but some parts in the story make you really care. The Voice Acting however needs much work ^_^. The meat of DMC1 (and the DMC series in general) isn’t the story but rather the SSStylish gameplay. The fighting mechanics in DMC1 are such that you can either kick total ass without even getting hit or get your ass totally handed to you by most bosses and even some particular enemies. In short fighting mechanics are very flexible in this game. Now the levels in DMC1 are broken down into missions and are quite simple and straightforward (nothing too complex to figure out) but the main challenge in this game lies with the bosses and their tendency to brutally annihilate any newcomer to the genre. Hard mode is where the difficulty really picks up and Dante Must Die mode (Extreme mode)ups the challenge by making it 3 times more difficult than Hard mode. Those challenges aren’t for casuals and if you’re planning to complete the game on DMD, expect yourself to master every nook and cranny of DMC1. I can proudly say I’ve beaten DMD mode and its one of the most insane accomplishments I’ve had in gaming and it is also something I’m never planning to do again. It took all the swear words in the urban dictionary and a broken controller to do that. But don’t let that put you off from playing this awesome game. Normal mode (although fairly challenging at first) is doable for any gamer and you should at least play through this mode and appreciate the stylish greatness of DMC1.

Do you have any recommendations for SO2-esque battle system games that... aren't SO2 (or the rest of the SO series... I don't think I could do it again)?

Haha. You shouldn't ever put yourself over the torture of playing SO 3 and 4 twice.
Now as far as I can remember. The Tales series are about the only game which have a slight resemblance to SO2's battle system. I wouldn't really call it a resemblance because SO2 has a unique battle system on its own.

And PDS IS EPIC. I was surprised it finished in 15 hours too but trust me the pacing is pretty good and this game will keep you guessing until the start of the fourth disc. I'm guessing I can finish the game in less than 10 hours now since I've replayed it quite a number of times but I would expect anyone who has experience with RPGs to finish around 13-25 hours their first time around. This game is shorter than the first Suikoden which says a lot about its length but PDS is unique enough to not be as much of an RPG as Suikoden.

#060 – Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (PS2)
I was a fan of PoP even before The Sands of Time came out. I loved the original PoP (1989) and its sequel PoP2: The Shadow and Flame. I even tried out PoP3D on the PC but I didn’t like it very much. When PoP: TSoT was announced I was super excited but at the same time I had doubts whether the game would be anywhere near as great as the original. As I started playing the game I was left astonished by the greatness of the platforming. Not only was it unprecedented, it was just super fun to do any of the Prince’s insane acrobatics whether it was the wall run or the wall jumping. It was just amazing. SoT however is an Action/Platformer and the Action part (While I couldn’t find many flaws at the time) is much weaker than its sequels. Apart from having a rather weak fighting engine, SoT has easily the best areas, easily the best story and the easily the best villain (even though he is also the villain in The Two Throne, he has more of an impact here) of the awesome Sands of Time trilogy. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remains my favorite one of the series and one of my favorite games on the PS2.

#061 – Star Ocean: The Second Story (PS1)
We’re on a RPG streak ^_^. Now Star Ocean hehe. Star Ocean is one of my least favorite RPG series after playing through all four of them. The 1st Star Ocean was so very generic and I didn’t find its battle system all that good. But to be fair it’s a fairly good SNES RPG but nothing great. SO3 disappointed me immensely because I had a fair share of hype for it but it bombed all over the place with its mediocrity (especially the 2nd disc). Now the 4th entry may very well have been one of the worst RPGs I’ve ever played. I mean I could have sworn the characters in the game were trolling me. Seriously I cannot imagine a worse set of characters (FF12’s characters look good compared to SO4’s) combined with bad and uber cheesy dialogue and muster all that up with super lame Voice Acting. Everything in the game was so damn corny that I hardly cared about the plot and just finished the game for completion’s sake.
Usually we have a black sheep in a great series but in the case of Star Ocean we have a golden egg amidst three black sheep. SO2 is not only the best SO game but one of the best games I’ve ever played on the PS1. Let me get the negatives out of the way first. The story is good at best but nothing great. The characters although quite easily the best bunch of the SO series, still needs some work on them. Now apart from these two negatives which really aren’t negatives if you ask me, SO3 is a beast in the gameplay department. First of all you can choose which main character you want to play as (Claude or Rena) and each has his/her own background story which you can only see if you choose him/her as your main character but the character you didn’t choose will join your party later on. The battle system is one of the best I’ve come across in an RPG. First of it is set in real-time and its pretty fast paced, it also requires a certain amount of skill (rather than just button mashing) and is quite challenging at times which keeps things fresh. Characters in SO2 can learn Spells and Killer Moves (Techniques) as they level up and gain SP (Skill Points) to learn various ‘specialty skills’ and ‘super specialty skills’ which adds a lot to the gameplay. Even if you’ve hated the other Star Ocean games (like me) you should at least try this one out. I don’t think it’s possible to hate a game this good.

#062 – Shining Force II (Genesis)
None of the SRPGs from its era and many even from a different era can’t match Shining Force II’s mastery. This is my personal favorite game on the Sega Genesis system because quite frankly only Phantasy Star IV comes remotely close to this. The second SF game is so much better than the first. Firstly, there is actually a pretty good plot in this one. Second, the characters are far more interactive (But the characters in the first are very memorable I might add). And third, the gameplay mechanics have been improved, polished and made better in every single way. SFII has some of the most memorable and epic strategy battles and it’s just so fun to play overall. SFII did what a sequel should do and that is outdo its original.

#063 – Panzer Dragoon Saga (Saturn)
This game is THE REASON why you should own a Sega Saturn system. I personally wouldn’t hesitate to buy a Saturn just for this game alone. Now the Panzer Dragoon series is generally known as a traditional style shooter but PDS crosses itself from that norm and produces a fantastic masterpiece of an RPG. Now PDS has a similar ATB style battle system to the FF series but in PDS, terrains play a huge role in the battles. This makes you strategize more than necessary and trust me it’s incredibly well crafted and fun. Gun upgrades are in place instead of generic equipments and trust me it isn’t a bother as it might sound to be. Now PDS has some great gameplay mechanics and most RPGs with great gameplay usually has a lackluster storyline. This is far from the case here. PDS has an epic storyline to go with it. Let’s say you probably won’t even know who the antagonist is at the start of the fourth and final disc. This game has a crafty storyline which will make you guess a lot. PDS however is way too short. It is probably one of the shortest RPGs I’ve played (15 hours on my first play through) but just like Suikoden 1, length is the only factor in this otherwise flawless masterpiece.

#064 – Suikoden (PS1)
Whenever I look at the date of release for the first Suikoden game I find myself in awe. How is a game from the mid 90’s able to produce such a quality story? Now the story isn’t great because of its fantastic translation, it’s because of how it’s presented. I’ve honestly NEVER been gripped to a story as much as this game during its time nor have I been so attached to the characters in a game ever before. Let’s just say compared to ANY SNES game or ANY PS1 game from its time, Suikoden 1’s story is in a whole different league. RPGs from its era can’t even compare to how much Suikoden can make you care for the story and its characters. What I like about Suikoden’s story is that it isn’t cliché and focuses on war rather than saving the world from evil. Because the story centers around war, one of the main and BEST things in the game (and the series) is recruiting allies (the 108 stars of Destiny) which becomes a tradition in the Suikoden series. Gameplay-wise Suikoden doesn’t really do anything extraordinary but doesn’t have any bad mechanics either. Also the Strategy battle is just a rock-paper-scissors rendition of war. My one gripe about Suikoden 1 is the fact that its way too short for an RPG (20 hours even on my first play through) and that it doesn’t boast anything extraordinary in the gameplay department. But the way its story made me care so much is just something so special and it is the first RPG to have ever made me have that feeling.

#065 – Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES)
One of the most overlooked RPGs from the SNES era and frankly this could very well have been the best RPG of its time if it weren’t for certain other SNES RPGs which broke new grounds.
Lufia II has one of the best storyline from any game during its time. The characters (although they look very generic at first) are marvelous and still some of the most memorable ones. The villains are easily the best bunch from the SNES era IMO and yes the 4 Sinistrals are very sinister ^_^. This game also has one of if not the most memorable endings to date in an RPG and some of the most emotional scenes as well. Now as far as gameplay goes, Lufia II leaves Lufia I in the dust. I’m not kidding. The battle system, although very similar, has improved and is much smoother this time around. The dungeons are what separates the two. Lufia II’s dungeons aren’t generic like Lufia I’s. Each dungeon requires using various skills to solve puzzles (they aren’t very difficult to figure out though) and it’s a refreshing take on the generic RPG dungeon crawling-grind-defeat boss which most RPGs were at the time. The Ancient Cave (A Bonus Dungeon) can literally make you clock over 50 hours because it has so much depth and requires its own grinding to get through.
Lufia II is my third favorite RPG on the SNES because in my books it is one of the most creative masterpiece in the history of RPGs. And for some reason this game never gets old no matter how many times I play it.

#066 – Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
My very first introduction to the FF series came with the release of Final Fantasy IV as Final Fantasy II (Which I absolutely hate calling it, and I never will after this post) in the SNES system. FFIV (U.S) was an easy-type version of the original FFIV (known as Hard-type, Japanese version).
FFIV wasn’t just my first FF game, it was the also the first RPG I’ve ever played. I was probably around 6 or 7 when I first played the game and I had no idea what to do at that time ^_^. And because of that I hated playing FFIV. It was only 2 or 3 years later that I finally completed the game and my very first RPG at that. It’s funny because at that time I had no idea what I was getting myself into. FFIV was the doorway to what would become my favorite genre in gaming and a genre without which I would never have been addicted to gaming in the first place. Now nostalgia aside, FFIV is still one of the best FF games. The story is arguably the best from the old-school FF games and FFIV also has some of my favorite characters from the series (namely Cecil, Rydia and Tellah). Everything about FFIV from a fair point of view is fairly simple and straightforward but it is also the second landmark in the FF series because FFIV was the second big hit for the FF series after FF1 globally.
Every RPG gamer has their first RPG which they look back at fondly, FFIV is my first and while it’s not even close to the best, it is certainly the one which holds the most memories from my childhood.

#067 – Tekken 3 (PS1)
Tekken 3 has set the bar so high for any fighting game to ever surpass it. For me, only the 1st Soul Calibur compares to it. The first time I played Tekken 3 on my PS1 I was shocked. I’ve NEVER played a fighting game as good as this. The fighting mechanics were just so polished and unleashing combos in Tekken 3 is just so satisfying. I got so good playing as Jin that none of my friends could even put a dent on me at that time ^_^. Team-Battle is the best multiplayer feature in this game and Tekken Ball Mode is also very fun to play with just to spice things up. The FMV epilogue of each character is done magnificently and each character is just so memorable and distinguishable because of his/her own unique style of fighting. Tekken Force Mode is also one of my favorite features in this game. In this mode you play in arcade-y side scrolling levels which has a beat em’ up style to it. Each and every gamer has a beloved Fighting game from their childhood. Tekken 3 was mine.

#068 – Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (PC)
This isn’t just my rating of Reign of Chaos. The Frozen Throne is also included with this since it’s basically the same game. Now Warcraft III remains one of those games from its generation which I still play regularly. Whether it’s playing DoTA (Defense of the Ancients) online or whether it’s playing 1v1 or 2v2, I still play this game every now and then with my buddies. If you must know, my favorite race is the Night Elves and my favorite hero in DoTA is the Troll-Warlord ^_^. Now the Campaign mode is really nothing special. First of all it’s too easy and then it just gets boring after a while. However knowing the background stories of the heroes in Warcraft is the main reason for playing through the campaign. Just like any RTS game Warcraft III’s strength lies in multiplayer rather than single player. I’ve probably never spent so much time on a game than this. Warcraft III deserves this high a ranking just for its greatness in the multiplayer department.

I’m one of those who’ve played Soul Calibur regularly right after its time of release and it is easily the most time I’ve clocked on the Dreamcast system. Soul Calibur is one of the few fighting series I buy regularly and it is one of my favorites as well. The 1st Soul Calibur however is just amazing. The sequels doesn’t even measure up to the greatness this game created. I’ve played this game more than all the other 3 Soul Calibur games combined and this is still the one I play whenever I want to release my Mitsurugi awesomeness. This game remains my second favorite from the fighting genre to this day.

Your faith in Djokovic is misplaced.

7 straight victories in finals including 3 slams. I think my faith is very well placed.

And Nadal's victory at MC will only be legit if he actually beats Djokovic at a slam. His best and only shot will be at this year's Roland Garros.

And Federer is winning Wimbledon and Olympics this year. BELIEVE!

#070 – Super Mario Bros 3 (NES)
Again like SMB1 this game needs no introduction anywhere. The third SMB game is the best from sheer length, variety, gameplay mechanics, things you can do, and just the overall fun factor. Tanooki-Mario (Raccoon-suit Mario) is what made this game what it is today. Exploring the MASSIVE 2D world of SMB3 with a Mario who can fly and glide was unprecedented. Not to mention this is also the most challenging SMB game (bar Lost Levels). Many still consider this game to be the best platformer EVER. I don’t think it’s the very best but it’s very close to it. This is also the greatest NES game I’ve ever come across.

^ You should play the first Phantasy Star to see the roots of the PS series. Even with its flaws it is still a classic RPG and at least worth a shot. There are many people who love the first unlike me.

But I advice you to stay the hell away from PSII and III.You're much better off spending your time playing another game.

So skip number 2 and 3 and go directly to the 4th. You're in for an amazing experience and will witness arguably the best storyline in an RPG from its generation.

#071 – Phantasy Star IV (Genesis)
I’ll be frank. I’m not that big a fan of the Phantasy Star series (I’ve played and finished all of them mind you) until I played the 4th entry. The 1st Phantasy Star may have been good for its time but it hasn’t aged well at all. I’ve played the 1st Phantasy Star in the mid 2000’s and found many glaring flaws (especially the pace of the game and the amount of grinding). And then we have Phantasy Star II which was a mega grind fest and one of the most difficult and unfair RPGs I’ve played. The writing wasn’t very good either. Phantasy Star III although not as bad as people make it out to be, left so much to be desired. The game suffered from poor gameplay mechanics and very very bad writing. Now let’s talk about how a series turned from “meh” to “OMG, this is amazing”.
Phantasy Star IV has quite possibly the best storyline in an RPG from its generation. The characters, their interaction, the manga-type cutscenes are simply amazing. The characters from PSIV especially are very memorable and some scenes in particular are very emotional. Although the story is still a generic save the world from evil it is done in a unique and unprecedented fashion. Trust me on this, PSIV is one of the few RPGs from its era which isn’t cliché ^_^. The game also has gameplay which matches up to its great storyline and some awesome and challenging boss battles. This is easily the most polished, the most entertaining and the most memorable PS game without question.

#072 – Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars (SNES)
This game gets rated way above the roof just because it’s a Mario RPG. Although a little overrated SMRPG is still a great game overall. There aren’t any noticeable flaws and the game has a pretty entertaining story as well (Although it’s a generic collect the seven stars to open the way to the final boss). What is best about SMRPG isn’t its variety of characters from the Mario series, it’s the unique turn-based battle system. Mario has all his powers you see in the Mario games: his fire flower power and his ability to damage enemies with jumps. Jumping on enemies are what makes the battles so special. I once lost count of how many times I’ve jumped on the enemy but when I was done, I did an insane amount of damage. Mario can also jump outside of battle leading to certain platforming which IMO adds a lot to the dungeons in the game. The characters in this game are also superb except for the fact that there is no Luigi in the game and I don’t see any reason why he shouldn’t have been there. SMRPG has one of my favorite optional bosses and one of my favorite final bosses as well. Quite a number of people make SMRPG to be the best RPG ever but I can assure you that even with its superb quality, it’s far from being the best RPG ever.

#073 – Final Fantasy V (SNES)
FFV could have been huge on this list if I didn’t play this game years and years after its release. The first time I played FFV it’s probably been around the late late 90’s or the early 2000. Now there are quite a number of FFV versions I’ve played: A fan-translated version on the SNES, the PSX anthology version (possibly the worst one I’ve played) and the GBA remake, FFV Advance (the best version of FFV). I’ll be ranking the fan-translated version on the SNES since it’s the most original. Now the story of FFV is pretty good, yes its generic and yes the final boss’s motives are questionable but it’s quite good especially if you’ve played the FFV Advance version on the GBA where the script is written masterfully. FFV’s best feature lies with its Job-Class system, easily recognizable and a system which FFV polishes. Each job class is unique and each one learns various abilities. There are so many abilities you learn from the job classes and right after learning it, the ability can be equipped by any class so long as the space to equip abilities allows it. This is without a doubt the best thing about FFV. Now the characters in FFV are one of my least favorite bunch in the FF series (FFV Advance again makes the characters more likable), they are not bad really (nowhere near as bad as FF12’s) but nothing great and it’s a shame since the FF series excels in the character department Apart from that this game is just a damn good old school FF game. Any FF fan would not want to miss this.

#074 – Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams (PS2)
In my personal opinion the 4th Onimusha is the most underrated game in the history of video games. Fans of the traditional Onimusha game totally rejected DoD as a successor to the Onimusha series. Harsh doesn’t even describe the treatment of DoD by fans of the Onimusha trilogy. Let’s get the negatives out of the way first. I accept the fact that DoD has its share of flaws just like any game from the Onimusha series has its own share of flaws (Fans of the trilogy are quite ignorant towards that). Targeting enemies (lock-on feature) is the number one flaw of this game and I accept the fact that it’s not perfect. Most people usually overreact to it but some of them are justifiable. Then the next commonly stated flaw is the camera angle which I personally prefer over any of the other Onimusha’s RE style camera angle (Onimusha 3 improved the camera angle though, mind you). Now combine those two flaws with tough boss fights (And yes they are pretty tough) and we have many people who quit the game prematurely. Now Onimusha 1-3 didn’t really have any difficult boss fights but DoD ups the ante and produces numerous bosses who can massacre you if you don’t know what you’re doing. But no way in hell is there any unfair challenge in this game. Your failure in this game occurs if you aren’t patient enough or simply playing through casually. With perseverance you’ll barely get hit by any enemies and that’s when you find the game truly fun. Characters in this game are also easily my favorite bunch in the Onimusha series. This game also has easily the best storyline and the best dialogue in the Onimusha series. RPG elements such as leveling up and the ability to collect and equip weapons and accessories are also present in this game which enhances the experience (especially for completionists like me). The number of weapons in this game is massive compared to the previous Onimusha games. This game is also very long for an Action game. 30+ Hours on my first play through. A 100% file (w/ New Game+) clocked nearly 60 hours for me. My favorite part however isn’t any of the things I mentioned. It’s the super challenging Dark/Phantom Realm. 100 floors with the toughest enemies in the game. At the end of the 100th floor lies the characters ultimate weapon (You can play as 5 different characters this time). And let’s just say it takes around 5 continuous hours for any first timers to complete the Dark Realm or even more depending on your preparation. The satisfaction for acquiring each character’s ultimate weapon is incomparable. And if you are an Issen expert (Critical strikes) like me ^_^, the Dark Realm is a dungeon of immense addiction and satisfaction. Anyone looking for a long Action game with great replay value shouldn’t look any further than Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, the true underrated masterpiece of all time.

SD3 had undoubtedly better plot, characters and even gameplay to some extent

SoM had better boss battles, dungeons, better world and is more memorable

But both should definitely be in anyone's Top 5-15 SNES RPGs

And Seiken Densetsu 1 (a.k.a The Final Fantasy Adventure which I hate calling) is a very decent game as well. It just doesn't compare to the 2nd and the 3rd

#076 – Mega Man 2 (NES)
The Mega Man game which MADE the Mega Man series isn’t the first game but the second. Like many I’m still blinded by the nostalgia and impact the 2nd Mega Man created on me. Each and every boss battle and level is just so memorable and MM2 had that notorious Hard Mode (Which I still haven’t beaten). If you compare it with the rest of the MM series (except 1 because MM2 improved so much over the first) this may seem like any other MM game. But just so you know MM2 was the one who built the series’ foundation and still remains on top with the way it’s structured. I lied when I said TMNT3 is the 2nd best game on the NES. There is only one NES game I hold over MM2 and I’m not lying this time. ^_^

#075 – Secret of Mana (SNES)
The Mana series could have been huge if developers continued making games like these. Imagine Secret of Mana on a system like PS3. *Mouth-waters. Seriously I don’t know why the Mana series isn’t taken seriously anymore. The recent Mana games were really really bad that I even forget it’s a Mana game. I believe the Mana series was at its prime during the SNES era and it stays that way. The 2nd entry of the Mana series (Known as Seiken Densetsu in Japan, far better name if you ask me) is still the best I’ve played. While the 3rd and Legend of Mana are really good, they still can’t compare with this classic. Now let’s talk about Secret of Mana. This game has a very average story like most Action-RPGs but the battle system remains one of my favorites to this day. I know that you can spam spells like crazy in this game making battles really easy but it was just so fun. The variety of spells (from each 3 characters) and the way the weapons (upgraded with orbs) are upgraded is what makes this game. Not to mention this game has one of the most unique and memorable final battle. Secret of Mana will forever remain as the best Mana game since it looks like the series isn’t delivering anything special anymore.

#078 – Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete (PS1)
I’ve already explained what makes the Lunar games on the PS1 so special on my Lunar 2 post. Lunar SSS is I believe the first game in the Lunar series (I haven’t played any other Lunar games apart from Lunar 1 and 2 besides the rather crappy Lunar Legend), the first Lunar game I’ve played and my hands down favorite. Lunar is very generic and pretty straightforward. Even the story is pretty cliché and straightforward. But it still has that unspeakable charm about it. The battle system is also very generic although it may seem really different from the generic JRPG at first. The first time you play SSS it is an experience like none other not because of how unique it is but because of how much fun you’re having with this very simple game. Its simplicity is its charm and because of its simplicity SSS is one of the RPGs I’ve replayed the most. This is without a doubt one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played.

#077 – Dark Cloud 2 (PS2)
This game is probably one of the most improved sequels of all time. I honestly cannot say there is a single attribute which the first Dark Cloud holds over this. Yep, this time we actually have a decent story as well. Although nothing great the storyline is far better than the first game. Now as far as gameplay goes, Dark Cloud 2 has one of the deepest and most innovative gameplay I’ve ever seen in an Action-RPG. Weapons synthesis is unique and there are various areas you can base your weapon around. This is infact one of the game’s finest features because I spent a lot of time synthesizing weapons, trying out something new and stuff. The dungeons are also an improvement especially with more challenging bosses this time around. Max and Monica each have their unique style of fighting and this time you can switch between the characters at any time during the battle. The music in Dark Cloud 2 is simply fantastic and has a lot of variety. Dark Cloud 2 is one of the finest among the massive RPG library on the PS2.

#080 – Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped (PS1)
Crash 3 and Spyro 3 were always my favorite 3D platformers for many years. I used to prefer Spyro 3 a little over this game but with recent replay I just realized this game is practically flawless and has aged better as well. I do not have the heart to put it below Spyro 3 this time. Everything about this game screams perfection except for the fact that explorations in levels are VERY limited and the game is super linear (Quite possibly one of the most linear 3D platformer I’ve played). Crash 3 has great boss battles, so many great and memorable levels and one of the best all-round gameplay. My favorite part about Crash 3 is the time trial for Relics. It just adds so much replay ability to this game. Just like the Spyro series, Naughty Dog ditched the Crash series after number 3 and the Crash series suffered a similar fate to that of Spyro. But the classic Crash (I hate Crash 1 though) and Spyro trilogy on the PS1 will forever be remembered as some of the best 3D platformers in gaming history.

#079 – God of War II (PS2)
The 2nd entry of the GoW series set up a platform for what could have been one of the best stories ever in a video game (GoWIII however failed to capitalize on it big time). GoWII still has the unmatchable gameplay of the first and improves upon it in more ways than just one. Firstly you have more variety of weapons, then there’s numerous boss battles (which the first one lacked) and the new game+ feature (The best on in GoW series). While GoWII’s story as a standalone isn’t nearly as good as the first’s it showed real promise for the next game which I believe was GoWII’s role. But GoWII is still very much a GoW1 clone with improved features. It just never had the impression the first one created.

#082 – Terranigma (SNES)
It’s sad that one of the finest Action-RPG of the SNES era is vastly overlooked. This game continues the Soul Blazer saga and is no doubt the best in the series. Soul Blazer and Illusion of Gaia are incomparable to the third entry when you take into account the improvements. The story, writing and presentation has improved tenfold but it is still far from being one of the best. But like its predecessors, Terranigma’s strong point likes within the gameplay. The battle system is one of the best in any RPG, you’re offered a large variety of skills which can be used in offense or defense. Terranigma separates itself from the generic Action-RPG hack and slash that Soul Blazer was and the more advanced Illusion of Gaia whose meat of the battle system was the controller combinations. Terranigma is better than both… combined. There aren’t any hidden dungeons like Illusion of Gaia in this game but the trade of artifacts between various cities in order to advance is just so fun that it doesn’t really matter. Terranigma can easily be a top 10 RPG in the SNES system which is famously known for spawning some of the greatest and most revolutionary RPGs in the history of video games.

#081 – Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon (PS1)
Spyro 2 used to be my favorite 3D platformer until Insomniac produced Year of the Dragon, simply the perfect Spyro game. I loved all the new characters you can play as (especially Sgt. Byrd and Bentley), the increased level of challenge, the bigger and better worlds, the better missions and the plentiful number of bosses. Although a lot of fans of the PS1 Spyro trilogy consider the 2nd to be the best, I totally disagree. Spyro 3 is also the last great Spyro game. The new ones are utter garbage (Including the Legend series) and doesn’t even compare to the level of the PS1 trilogy. This game has been my favorite 3D Platformer for quite a while and is still one of my favorites to this day.

#084 – Seiken Densetsu 3 (SNES)
The third entry of the Mana series has never been localized outside Japan which is such a shame since it’s easily one of the best in the series. Now this game plays just like Secret of Mana except that it has a more enhanced battle system where you can’t just spam magic to make everything challenge-less anymore. Seiken Densetsu 3 has 6 protagonists (If I remember correctly. It’s been quite a while), from which you can choose 3 characters you want in the party (each with their own storyline). The story although much better than Secret of Mana isn’t anything extraordinary. But trust me when I say this, this is the epitome of the Mana series no matter how you look at it. It just falls a little short of being as great as the second Mana game for reasons I don’t know why.

#083 – Resident Evil 5 (PS3)
The Resident Evil 4 copycat which I clocked so many hours on. I find it funny that Capcom seriously didn’t do anything new to RE5 apart from the forced Co-op campaign. Now don’t get me wrong. RE5 is fun and awesome to play through. It’s just that it doesn’t feel like it is its own game. Let me get the negatives out of the way first. The areas in RE5 are very dull. It probably has the worst atmosphere from the entire RE series. Then there is the A.I (Which is smarter than the average A.I mind you) which can never be as good as a live player and trust me the A.I shows its flaws especially during the harder difficulties (Professional especially). Then there is the non-existant horror. RE5 has absolutely no horror and I believe even a 10 year old wouldn’t get scared in this game. Now apart from the flaws I stated, not much can go wrong when a game is designed EXACTLY like its mega-hit successor. Simply put, RE5 is one of the best games if you discount it copying the same formula from the previous game. The story is better than RE4 and it has more references to the series’ roots than RE4 which is a good thing. Mercenaries (mini-game) is also so much more fun in RE5 and there’s just so much more gameplay there. Overall RE5 is a great game even without its lack of innovation.
