I don't quite remember the details, but Ben Hurst, one of the showrunners for SatAM, made a post on one of the fansites before his death that strongly implied he was under that impression. Around 2000, Hurst had teamed up with Penders, who was the comic writer at the time, to pitch a third season to networks. Hurst had a private talk with an executive that he felt went very well, but the exec subsequently contacted Penders and the entire tone of their dialogues suddenly changed, with the idea quickly getting canned after that. Obviously there was no guarantee that a season would have been greenlit regardless, but Hurst's description of the matter made it clear this was more than a simple polite declining. Edit: Found the actual quote from Hurst: I did consult with DIC to see if there was a way to generate some enthusiasm for a feature film to be the "Third Season" of SatAm. I was given the name of a SEGA executive and had a most pleasant conversation. | Captain_Sorzo 08/09/20 4:02:57 AM #15 | The Ken Penders rabbit hole is fascinating. It's a horrifying nightmare, yet I keep finding myself drawn to the grim spectacle of it all. I'm glad Sega never tried to put the Freedom Fighters and other alternate continuity characters in the games, though. I'm a huge fan of SatAM and Sally in particular, but Sonic Team doesn't exactly have the best track record of storytelling (Colors onward is particularly unbearable), and there's absolutely zero chance that those characters could be done justice. --- "In this world you will have trouble.
