I cant speak for the religious conservatives on this issue but Im pretty sure the problem they had was the term marriage. That term, to them, only means a man and a woman - according to their respective religion (Christianity or Judaism). These people wanted them to call it a civil union. They were wrong to try and overreach their religion to the government.

Thus, gay marriage today is allowed in this country. Which is a great thing.
