There was a discussion about it in mafia general discussion a few months back. The admin of the site comes over to all the 165 sites and posts the invitation each year. I asked to be nominated and people were cool with it.

Mafia tournament featuring 165 different websites, each website nominated one person to go play.

There were 11 qualifier games of 15 people. After each game, the players vote +3/+2/+1 on who the "best player" was overall, and the winner moves on to the finals. (4 more of the "best of the rest" get chosen as wildcards)

Finals starts on Monday.

If you're interested, there's a discord chat where dozens of people will be reading and discussing/analyzing the game.

We picked this up by noticing it being played as a variant of mafia on some other forum, and we sort of made our own version of it and kept tweaking the rules until it was balanced.

Ghost is a word puzzle game where each player is told the “secret word” and must come up with a cryptic hint for it. A small number of players are secretly chosen as “ghosts”. They don’t know what the word is, and have to guess it based on these hints. It’s a game that highly rewards creativity, as well as critical thinking skills. Read the full rules below!

Here's how the game works:

I will think of a secret word. Some players know the secret word, while others have to guess it. Each player is given one of those roles:

Ghost: Does not know the secret word. Knows who the other ghosts are. Wins by guessing the secret word.

Villager: Knows the secret word, must not allow the ghosts to figure it out. Does not know who is a villager and who is a ghost.

The secret word could be anything. For example: Oreo, China, Antelope, Hotdog, Link, Cloud, Samus, Rabbit, Cow, etc. Each round will have a different category, such as “animals”, “food”, “video games”, “adjectives”, etc. The ghosts will know the category and the number of letters in the word, but nothing else.

The game begins with the “Hint Phase”. I will send everyone their role, one by one. When I send you a “Go!”, you can post a hint for the word in the twitch chat. The hint should prove that you know the word, but shouldn’t be so clear that it gives the answer away. The ghosts don’t know the word; they will post a fake hint! Once everyone has given a hint, we move on to the main part of the game: the voting phase.

Once the game begins, everyone has a vote. Your goal, if you are a villager, is to vote out the ghosts! Look for the hints that don’t make sense to you! You vote in the chat by saying “##Name” with the name of the person you think is a ghost. If you are a ghost, you have to pretend to be a villager during this phase of the game. Once the majority has voted someone out, I will reveal if they were town or ghost, and the voting phase will repeat.

The town will lose if the number of ghosts alive is ever equal to the number of villagers. The town wins if they lynch all the ghosts. But watch out, there are penalties for accidentally voting out the villagers! Get it wrong too many times, and the ghosts will learn letters from the word. The ghosts can win by guessing the secret word. Each ghost has one guess to the word which they can use at any time, up until 5 minutes after they die.

There are 2 other roles in the game. The first is the “fool” role. A fool is exactly like a villager, except the word they are given by the host is wrong! So, if the word was “apple”, the fool might be told it is “peach” instead. This can really throw a wrench in things, so be careful! Additionally, there can be various special roles with special powers, but these are used very rarely.

The core mechanic of this game is the hint phase. You need to make a hint that is clear enough to show the other villagers that you know the word, but vague enough so that the ghosts don’t get it. If you discuss too much, you give the ghosts more information to figure out the word. So you need to be efficient in figuring out which players are lying.

Yeah, I see what you mean. The physics are very different.

But I was never one of the people saying "TeiN is exactly like Super Meat Boy", in fact I said it's about as different as you can feel given it's the same genre and artist.

Well, I didn't get the deathless !s anywhere. So that's a big difference in time/deaths.

As a sidenote, you said you hadn't played Jumper, right?

I'd say start with Jumper 2. If you like it, Jumper Redux. Then Jumper 3.

They're what got me into this genre in the first place.

They're very outdated, especially the physics, but you might still enjoy them. You might not. But worth checking out.

I even got 500 rings, which is funny because I completely ignored them.

Can't keep doing SMC and feeling shitty when I die in world 10 because I can't practice it and have to just keep redoing all the same 90 levels.

Thanks for making this topic, I enjoyed playing the game blind and just talking about it here. Reminds me of the good old days when we were kids and just played games without knowing everything that was coming and could only talk to a friend for advice and hints. Don't really get that experience with games anymore, strangely enough.

I still love this game's design. It's fresh in just the right ways. Little things like discovering the split, the keys and carts, the future monsters, wondering what the body parts are for and getting to the future, the final area and it's backwards chase, etc. The game isn't super new, but it always kept me guessing at what was gonna happen next. I feel like I don't get that sense of discovery from a lot of games nowadays.

I guess that's where I'm at as well.

But I haven't gotten the !s.

Either way, I'm at 99%. I got a few levels into area 10 of Super Mega Cart but... eh. I'm okay. Don't really wanna do those levels again.

honestly the ring carts were probably my least favourite part of the game

i think it's because they had such leniant life systems that i never had to learn to do them properly, i'd just collect rings and die and generally be okay.

I couldn't make myself give up, so I resorted to just multitasking - playing through Acceptance while watching TV on my second monitor, so I could just mindlessly go through the first 4 areas only half paying attention, while actually doing something useful with my time.

I died on 5-1 and 5-3 a few more times.

It was actually 5-3 I died on last night, not 5-4.

I made it through 5-4 without ever dying.

I fell off the screen two or three times in 5-5 but luckily I didn't die, so that's that.

Beat 5-5 on my first try.

But fuck Rubble Bobble. What the fuck is with that ring at the top corner of 8-3? Am I missing something? The only way to get it is to do a stupid pixel-perfect split-second jump and hang on the ledge...

I don't know if I'll ever do Super Mega Cart. If I ever finish Rubble Bobble.

Yeah, there are a lot of ups and downs for me in this one. Day 2 was particularly rough.

I spent half the game posting from my phone barely keeping up, writing novels at night instead.

Meh. Died in 3-3.

We'll see if I try it again later.

I made it to 5-...4? On my next attempt.

I died in a dumb way, but the level was easy.

So I guess I can do it.

Okay well I decided to give Acceptance one try tonight and made it to 5-1 right away.

So I think that's a sign I've sufficiently "mastered" the first 4 levels.

But that doesn't mean I wanna do them again and again because I'm trial-and-erroring this first jump in 5-1.

Idk how to do it. But I'm scared to try because it just means repeating the levels.

But I figured I'd give Nevermore one more try

And I beat it

Which unlocked The End Is Nigh

and so I figured I might as well give it a look

And after beating a level or two, I realized if I stopped I'd have to redo them because the game doesn't save progress on these

So I just had to beat them all

Not the best level to play at 2AM when you need sleep

But I did it

So now all I have left is Rubble Bobble, Super Mega Cart, and Acceptance.

I... should really beat Rubble Bobble. I may be the only one to beat TEiN cart before it. lol.

then I'll only have super mega cart and Acceptance, and Nevermore

idk if I'll ever do super mega cart. I never really learned how to get rings without dying, I knew I had 20 lives so I was pretty reckless. Not sure I'm up for learning all those levels again.

I also realized tumors have always been lives, not just in Nevermore

I realized this only because I read a comment about the game being too hard because you have a life limit in the future (like did this person just never collect tumors???)

rubble bobble is dumb because there's a ring in 8-3 that, if you miss it, you fall to the end of the level and can't kill yourself to get back so you just can't get the ring goals and have to restart. it's bad design.

Speaking of limits that I didn't notice...

I got a "game over" on Nevermore 7 which made me realize the life limit.

I had 30 extra tumors, so I tried again and got to 9.

But I guess I should do the rest of the carts first.

Died at a jump there. No idea how to even do it.

3-1 and 3-3 really are the only tough spots, though some of the jumps in the later 3-X levels are tricky.

Kinda lame to make you keep doing it when you're obviously gonna die in the 5th area a few times. But okay.

Made it to the very last jump on my fourth attempt.

2:28 remaining on my fifth and final attempt.

I made it to level 5 the first time before I even noticed there was a timer!

Made it to level 7 my second time.

Just barely made it to level 10 third time.

I have 479 tumors. I have everything from the world map. I'm just missing the second half of the collect-10-rings carts. Those give tumors right? I've never paid attention.
