Gonna have to give credit to the only First Lady to become a Senator, Secretary of State, and winner of the popular vote in a national election for President. She was elected, selected, and neglected in very high-profile ways that had impacts years after her time as First Lady.

Wilson is mostly here because she basically ran the country at one point, and during that time pushed hard for women to be able to vote. That's pretty big.

Actually very hilariously, she was staunchly opposed to suffrage but suggested Woodrow support it so people would know she wasnt pulling his strings. Hilarious.

This ones really tricky but here would be my answers

Abigail Adams - an absolutely vital primary source for the founding and a staunch abolitionist and feminist far far ahead of her time

Dolly Madison - a tad overrated for sure but she was absolutely vital to the establishment of culture and arts in the District of Columbia

Eleanor Roosevelt - the very model of the modern activist first lady and still the best, absilutrly vital to the advancement of labor unions womens rights and civil rights.

Betty Ford - she is a large part of the inspiration for the First Lady on thr West Wing and she was incredible. Single handedly dragged the Ford administration to the left on drugs, womens rights, civil rights, abortion. The real ones know Betty Ford was a bad ass.

I will not be voting for:
Edith Wilson - I mean she was basically president so thats cool plus she was a huge part of advocating for Wilson to reject womens suffrage, which he overruled her on. She was also a lost cause pro confederscy activisr.

Yeah Arthur was like the only one not in on the joke that he was supposed to be Vice President just as a nod of respect to his machine and that he was supposed to save patronage.

He took the vice presidency incredibly seriously and felt it was his duty to see through Garfields plans. And he just generally was solid

He might have run for reelection but frankly he knew he was dying so he just stepped aside.

True story I probably don't put Obama on Rushmore if he's not black (he did fine attempting to clean up W's mess and had a lot of charisma so is a good face for America but yeah, culturally it matters mostly) and don't vote JFK if he didn't get assassinated-- just think those two will be memorable forever because of those things and didn't have complete trainwrecks of runs as presidents so yeah.

I mean Teddy Roosevelt won the Nobel Peace Prize for helping to negotiate an end to the Russo-Japanese war and had the Great White Fleet tour the Pacific so he could show everyone the US meant fuckin business in the Pacific. The Spanish American War waa our big entrance to world affairs (which FINE was McKinley) was associated with Roosevelt and his rough riders and he was essentially the hero of the war. Also opened the Panama Canal to that end and you may recall he sent gunboats to japan to make them trade with us.

Wilson did make absolutely sure Germany lost WW1 but hes a major reason the peace was so fucked up so.

Wilson - Not sure what youre voting for here? Being the worst of the three progressive presidents? Absolutely no reason to put him over Taft. He also segregated the federal service, so thanks for that Woody. His ideas regardong international community destablizrd the fuck out the balkans and his insistence on the League of Nations (which he couldnt even convince his own congress to join) crowded out better ideas and led directly to the international framework Hitler abused to rise to power. Then the last few years of his presidency were basically weekend at Bernies because he had a stroke and his wife secretly ran the country in his stead.

Madison - Only by grace of Napoleon returning from exile was the US not absolutely fucked by his decision to provoke a war with britain. Only worth putting here if youre gonna include pre presidential accomplishments (mostly the constitution). Wouldnt put him here over Franklin or Hamilton for revolutionary accomplishments though.

LBJ - Civil Rights, Medicare, Medicaid, the good versions of Social Security and Welfare all stem from his admin. Yes Vietnam is a thing but the major war crimes are mainly nixon and the idea of the war is mainly kennedy, LBJ is just holding the bag and you know what US relations with Vietnam are fine now so the lasting damage is way overstated.

Grant - the only president pre Eisenhower who gave a SHIT about Jim Crow. Yes his admin is responsible for some wildly, irresponsibly pro corporate shit and he had some blatant grifters working for him, he was president for one reason and if the GOP had kept up his commitment to sending troops adter the klan the world might be a better place.

4th is tricky because these candidates dont have sparing highs to outweigh their negatives or in the case of the one who does have soaring highs his negatives are literally genocide

Jackson - oversaw major expansion of the franchise and was responsible for really making the country significantly more democratic, this included defeating the idea of a National Bank which i know you libertarians liked. But you know...strongly pro slavery, responsible for a lot of anti native american genocide.

Van Buren - Jacksons right hand for all of the above but he was also the first president to take actions trying to limit the spread of slavery and would later become a full blown abolotionist. The trick is Jackson wqs actually president for the realization of all of Van Burens pro liberalization of the vote goals and his attempts to slow the spread of slavery were ultimately ineffective.

Arthur - Against all odds and at great personal expense, he followed through on Garfields promise to end the patronahe system and passed the laws that created the modern federal bureaucracy, a move absolutely vital for the accomplishments ofnthe Progressives and FDR/LBJ. But this was his only accomplishment and he did sign the chinese exclusion acts.

Adams - Kept the US out of major wars, opposer slavery, downside he was kinda fashy.
