I go to taco bell about 5 days a week. I've probably had about 60% of the menu. It's a big menu. Current top 5 items (it changes every few months though):

1) Crunchwrap Supreme (all around pretty great)
2) Shredded Chicken Quesarito (best tasting thing, but a lot of calories)
3) Cheesy Gordita Crunch (only item with their amazing "spicy ranch" sauce)
4) Double Decker Taco Supreme (really good side item)
5) Shredded Chicken Burrito (like smaller quesarito, doesn't break the bank on calories)

Are they really that related? From my memory of the HP series, Grindelwald and Voldemort never met until late book 7... And Voldemort's true intentions were more self-centered I always thought, just seemed to use some of Grindelwald's politics to gain followers quickly...or perhaps to feel like he was carrying out his Slytherin bloodline...

I love these Jeremy Parish lists, especially the risky choices he always puts in. Bubble Bobble at #2 is an awesome choice, yeah, I have to agree, that game freaking rules.

CV3 should be higher though.

Also I will respect him forever for putting NSMBU at the top of the Mario list, that is the best Mario game.

In 1997, grinding out the money for a duplicator, and tearing up the game feeling like you're almost cheating, was a hell of a moment. I have a feeling a lot of those dumb one-time-use items are only in the game so that getting the duplicator becomes a fun endgame thing. What a weird, kinda awesome design choice.

SotN is dumb, but it is a fun, wild dumb.

The shield rod is possibly even more overpowered than that, if you can believe it. The secret of the shield rod is not the weird projectiles it shoots. Instead, you equip shield rod with any shield, and press both attack buttons at the same time (square+circle on a playstation controller, B and X on an xbox controller I suppose). Every shield has a unique effect! Collect all the shields to see all the effects =]

Personally, I'm glad they don't explain that shield rod secret in the game anywhere...

I think my ranking of ones I've played more than 10 minutes of is:

Rondo of Blood > SotN > Curse of Darkness > Order of Ecclesia > Portrait of Ruin > Dawn of Sorrow > III > Aria of Sorrow > IV > Lament of Innocence > Chronicles (PSX) > Harmony of Dissonance > Circle of the Moon > CV1 > 64 > Judgment > Adventure Rebirth > Bloodlines > Dracula X (SNES) > II

And if I could include Bloodstained Curse of the Moon I bet it would be third or fourth ...

Rondo of Blood really is that good, huh? It is more old-school Castlevania style though, right? I couldn't possibly foresee myself liking it as much as this or the DS games if so; Metroidvanias are just one of my favorite genres period. I really need to go play like, Axiom Verge, Ori and the Blind Forest, and all those other more recent Metroidvania releases that people love so much.

Interesting that you think each DS Castlevania got better than the last. What's your reasoning there? The only way I could see that is in the bosses, but in terms of map design, I just really loved Dawn of Sorrow. Portrait was a neat hybrid of sorts though between the more confined, linear design of Ecclesia and the Metroidvania design of DoS (although it was obviously closer to DoS).

Yeah I looove Rondo, play it once a year or more. I need really interesting combat situations for me to truly love a Castlevania game, and I'd say Rondo is the best sidescroller action game ever, along with having probably top 5 music in the series, and great atmosphere and style (that Death fight is soooo cool IMO). I don't really care that much about exploration or abilities in Castlevania games, so those aren't dealbreakers for me.

A flaw in the series that affects a lot of the games, is feeling a little boring at times. For a lot of the metroidvania games, a lot of times it feels like I'm not exploring, I'm not making progress, I'm not having fun fights, I'm just filling in holes in my map. It can feel very rote, especially when replaying. Of the DS games, Dawn feels the most like that, I always feel like I'm entering a room, walking up to each enemy, attacking, walking forward again, not terribly interesting. I'm not sure I can ever play Dawn again because I dread filling in that boring upper-left area, or the boring cave areas (although I do adore that right-most tower area). In Portrait, I really love casting spells as Charlotte, that leads to weird combat that is kinda unlike any other action game. And Ecclesia, I feel like they did a great job on the combat situations in that game, it's one of the only metroidvania games out there that I would call challenging.

They're great games though, I think all the games on that list up through Aria I would call "Awesome", and then everything up through 64 I would call "Pretty Good", the others, "kinda bad".

GJ on SotN! Yeah you should go back and re-play DoS now and compare. It's really hard to go back to the GBA games if you've recently played SotN 'cause the graphics/music are such a downgrade, (but the DS games are comparable there, along with the more carefully planned gameplay design).

I think my ranking of ones I've played more than 10 minutes of is:

Rondo of Blood > SotN > Curse of Darkness > Order of Ecclesia > Portrait of Ruin > Dawn of Sorrow > III > Aria of Sorrow > IV > Lament of Innocence > Chronicles (PSX) > Harmony of Dissonance > Circle of the Moon > CV1 > 64 > Judgment > Adventure Rebirth > Bloodlines > II

The max percent being 200.6% was the thing I didn't want to say before, but it makes me think the extra squares in the inverted castle's underground caverns map, were a mistake they didn't have time to figure out how to remove (surely the max percent ought to be 200.0%).

Yeaaaah I started to write you a warning about the broken squares that you have to transform into a wolf for. Actually, if I compare the maps, I'm pretty sure that those squares are a glitch they couldn't fix. Because, those squares don't exist in the right-side up map. And just, they only had 2-3 programmers on this game, so... And 1 more reason I won't say yet...

IMO, all of the familiars take waaaay too long to get their cool stuff, so long that, familiars are barely part of the game, besides novelty.

a cool part of SOTN, is the crazy variety of the stuff they crammed in there, and the worst part of SOTN is how it's all crammed in there not so carefully.

STM maybe what you might be missing is, how excited GB has been about the Switch since it has launched. They can't resist asking "is it coming to switch" every ten minutes. So from that point of view, seeing this press conference, seeing barely anything in it besides Smash, which they don't care about, was a huge disappointment, relatively speaking, compared to Switch's last 12 months.

Also Jeff and Brad love to hate on mario party because that's a running gag from their "mario party party" series of videos, where Dan drags them into playing 4-5 hour games of mario party.

And, they do take a cynical look at a lot of aspects of gaming, especially prerelease material, but it's kind of their job as critics, to not buy into hype. This is part of the genuineness that is the best part of GB.

So how does experience work in this game exactly? Like for every time you kill an enemy a second time, does the experience gained keep halving or something? That's what it's seeming like to me.

I think it's just something like, each enemy type has a level, and the higher level you are compared to that, the less exp you get. If you're way higher level, you'll only get 1 exp.

Also YES the cloaks rule. Bring 'em back!

oh man, I'm watching the IGA + double fine "devs play" sotn, and IGA's assistant just randomly pointed at some stained glass in the background and knowingly said "stained glass! can't get enough of that in games" and IGA agreed. SotN's gameplay is clunky, especially in the interface and some of its mechanics

Funny you should mention the interface, because the pause menu was entirely very early placeholder text and graphics and they always meant to replace it but didn't have time. IGA made a rule after that, no placeholders, anything added to the game has to look at least passable. Or something like that. I remember it from the double fine 2 hour "devs play" interview with IGA about SOTN.

Uggh I think it's time for me to rewatch that interview it was so good

Yeah that means your magic bar reached its max.

For the metroidvania-style Castlevania games, I feel like about 50% of fans prefer Symphony, and about 50% would choose one of the GBA/DS games as their favorite. People are pretty split about it!

For me, the soundtrack, art, and atmosphere of Symphony are just too good, that's the game I adore the most. But admittedly, the systems and gameplay are not perfectly designed and it makes the difficulty curve not work very well. I think that's the main criticism of Symphony compared to the later games.

BOTW is my 2nd favorite game ever, but it is definitely not for everyone. If you're not enjoying it after a few hours, you're not going to suddenly start. It's trying to be a very specific thing. It has a lot of weird design choices. A lot of those design choices are pretty much bad. But I think they were necessary design choices, to be able to create what they were trying to create: a game of truly self-directed adventure and discovery.

It's trying to be a very specific thing, and if you're not a person who's been looking for that very specific type of game, then you're not going to enjoy it.

When people point out parts of the game that just plain don't feel great, it's true, they don't feel great. There really isn't much character progression. So if you're looking for that, you'll be disappointed. There aren't dungeons or any typical Zelda stuff really. If you're looking for that, you'll be disappointed.

For me, all my life I've looked for a game that captures the feeling of being very alone and traversing a huge atmospheric moody landscape, seeing things I want to investigate, and then investigating them without any dumb dialog box or menu telling me to do so, and knowing when I get there I won't be blocked because I'm "not supposed to be here yet", no, I want to investigate it fully. For me, I've never found that game until now.

(Minecraft was close, but the world generation was just too predictable.) (Skyrim was also close but there's too many times where a landmark is useless unless you already have the quest that directs you there.)

Ooh for asymmetrical stuff, the first thing that always comes to mind is, Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation, dunno if you've heard of that. It's an outrageously well-designed 2 player game, somewhat like stratego, but a million times better than stratego because it's more interesting and somehow much faster than stratego.

Anyway, one player is sauron's side, one player is the fellowship, and both sides have completely different win conditions--fellowship just needs to do whatever it takes to sneak Frodo into the Mordor space (way in the back of the opponent's side), and the other player needs to either kill Frodo OR get 3 pieces into the Shire (way in the back of the fellowship's side).

And not only that, but both sides have completely different pieces too, and every piece in the game has a unique ability as well. The fellowship's pieces are good at retreating from bad situations, or sacrificing themselves for benefits. The sauron pieces are ridiculously strong, but the objective is harder.

(Unrelatedly, it has what I like to cite as one of the greatest rules in a board game ever: you can only move pieces forward, not sideways or back! You literally can't turtle.)

I also hate pandemic. I feel like pandemic is the most quarterbacky coop I've played. It's easy for someone to start quarterbacking, AND it's also the most effective way to play. This is strictly against what I think board games are for, a playground where you can do whatever strategies and tactics you want, not having to worry about what someone else wants you to do.

Haven't played legacy though (although I know it wouldn't be my cup of tea, I only like a game if I can explore it 100s of times, deeper and deeper)

When I go back home for various holidays, we usually have 7 people for games, and No Thanks is one of the only games I own that works great with 7 and we all unanimously like it. Nobody's crazy about it, but everyone has a good time and wants to play multiple rounds. We'll usually play a big round of Balderdash, a few rounds of No Thanks, and a finale round of Sushi Go Party.

I slightly prefer For Sale over No Thanks, but For Sale only goes up to 6 :( and my brother hates it for some reason.
