I've never really watched much Giant Bomb before this E3 but man, these guys sure hate them some Nintendo games.

I feel like the people who should be upset about this Nintendo showcase the most ARE Nintendo fans.

Listening to the audio of the night shows and I have to say, I don't see what was at all "momentum killing" about it. You can argue that they didn't show a lot of their lineup, and there are games out soon that weren't on the floor. It is also absolutely disappointing that Yoshi and Fire Emblem got delayed to 2019, after a year and a half of no delays.

However, they have big exclusive releases every month for the rest of the year, one of them is the biggest game of E3 and arguably the year. They have indies and bigger third party games. Hollow Knight releasing was a big deal for instance. They absolutely have momentum.

Now I don't think the direct was great but their lineup is rock solid. I do think they were treating this as just another direct (hence using the direct branding, which normally they haven't). But in terms of games and momentum for the Switch I think Giant Bomb are going to be on the wrong side of history on this one. And I'm prepared to eat crow on that if I'm wrong!

I mean, other than FE, I'm PERSONALLY uninterested in a single thing they showed, and nothing they showed about FE itself was that interesting either.

I came to that direct for Metroid, Bayonetta, SMT, and No More Heroes, and none of them appeared in any capacity whatsoever.

My issue with that is you can say it about any press conference. You have to look at it in the broader picture. Like, I'm probably not going to pick up Super Mario Party but I recognise that it's a big release for Nintendo. And this is what I wish the GB guys would do more with games they're not personally interested in at E3. I do agree that the lack of No More Heroes was odd, though.

Also no love for Octopath? Or Daemon X Machina?

This sounds like your looking for an objective representation of video games, and it's pretty clear that Giant Bomb isn't that.

Why do they need to recognize every single thing if they aren't interested in it? There are a million different places you can go if you're looking for that.

You're right but that's why I said "at E3". I'm definitely not after that in their coverage of the games they happen to play. I just took issue with their representation of the lineup as bad for Nintendo, not their personal feelings on the lineup. Alex did touch on this to be fair.

0 interest in Octopath. Played both demos and didn't care at all. Honestly, none of the retro RPG throwbacks have done anything for me over the last few years.

Not sure why Daemon x Machina is something I should care about either. Whole lot of nothing in that trailer.

FE was the only thing I cared about at all. Mario Party blows. Pokemon looks terrible. The only thing I care about in Smash is seeing a new character, mechanics mean nothing to me because I dont take the game seriously. To me it was 25 minutes to announce Ridley.

They basically tailor made this conference to showcase everything I dont care about and specifically cut out the only Switch games I'm looking forward to in their whole announced lineup.

But hey.

That's just me!

There was a bunch of Daemon X Machina gameplay. That game looks rad. It is a shame you don't enjoy Octopath. But hey it's your opinion and that's cool!

Ben basically says my view on Nintendo's lineup on the Bombcast. It's stronger than the direct. It's mainly Jeff I disagree with.

I see I started quite the conversation regarding Giant Bomb and Nintendo coverage.

Yeah, watching their "we talk over" [insert press conference here], it was pretty funny watching them basically shit on everyone, and I like the general vibe of the crew. So I get that talking shit is their thing, but man they just seemed to hate on Nintendo to a whole 'nother level. Like, personally, Smash hyped me wayyyy more than any single other thing at E3 altogether, but I can still recognize that was a weak direct if you don't care about Smash. No Prime 4? No new Animal Crossing as everyone (kind of unfairly) expected? What about that rumored Star Fox Grand Prix?

But I also recognize that Nintendo has multiple directs a year where they're constantly revealing stuff, so E3 just isn't as essential for them as it is for Sony and Microsoft. And it's just hilarious seeing the ecstatic reactions of say, Easy Allies, to Nintendo's E3 Direct compared to Giant Bomb, who acted like they witnessed the holocaust in gaming form.

That said, I don't see what the rage is about this site at all and I much prefer the aforementioned Easy Allies. Even IGN has better group banter stuff -- their podcast Game Scoop might be my favorite gaming podcast period.

Edit: So basically what I'm saying is someone tell me why Giant Bomb's content is so great. I'm open for convincing.

Things like Easy Allies always come across as fake, they don't have the air of complete honesty you get from GB. Even watching EA's E3 stuff from this year alone, you could point out several moments where the EA crew was doing things like disengenuous cheering and nudging people to act more excited for the camera, it's a big feeling of "we have to act hype because that's our job and it's what people expect".

If you don't dig smash that Direct was a nightmare, and the most confusing thing to me is people who think GB was crazy for being anti-hype. I think this was Nintendo's worst showing in years, and a lot of that is the complete lack of even a namedrop for SEVERAL announced titles, magnified by 20 minutes of Smash details that really should have had their own, Smash focused direct, like they have done many times in the past.

People always talk about the Sony and Xbox fanboys going at each other, but there is no fanbase quite like Nintendo's that gets angry when people don't treat something like it's the greatest thing ever when it's shown.

This isn't the only topic on B8, or on Gamefaqs in general, where the Sony fans were like "yeah that press conference was weird", whereas Nintendo fans are like "how dare you criticize that direct. What do you mean Smash isn't god's gift to man?"

STM maybe what you might be missing is, how excited GB has been about the Switch since it has launched. They can't resist asking "is it coming to switch" every ten minutes. So from that point of view, seeing this press conference, seeing barely anything in it besides Smash, which they don't care about, was a huge disappointment, relatively speaking, compared to Switch's last 12 months.

Also Jeff and Brad love to hate on mario party because that's a running gag from their "mario party party" series of videos, where Dan drags them into playing 4-5 hour games of mario party.

And, they do take a cynical look at a lot of aspects of gaming, especially prerelease material, but it's kind of their job as critics, to not buy into hype. This is part of the genuineness that is the best part of GB.

I generally don't like tarring entire fandoms with sweeping generalisations, though I would point you to many Sony fans' reactions to Giant Bomb's coverage of E3 2015 and 2016. Nintendo fans haven't bombarded their E3 videos with dislikes like those did. The latter in particular was striking because the show was pretty typical. You can go back further if you want and look at hardcore fans of the original Xbox, which they've discussed on the podcast. Every fandom is crappy. However I don't think there is any objective metric by which you can say Nintendo fans have worse reactions to their coverage than Sony fans have, in fact the opposite has been true.

Also there is a difference between disagreeing with their commentary and getting mad about it. I disagree with some of Jeff and Dan's (and LtM's) statements about the broader context of their lineup but whatever man, it's no big deal.
