I was fortunate enough to have parents that gave clear instructions on avoiding student loans and why it was important to do so. Not everyone was so fortunate and they are absolutely a scam. Maybe they were "fine" 30-40 years ago, but the cost of education has gone way up and the availability of jobs that could put you in a strong enough financial situation to repay the loans have gone way down.

It's a tabletop game with a sadistic dungeon master and so many people feel the need to blame the players for participating in a game that's rigged against them. The reality is that the option of "leaving the table and finding a different game with different rules" is often going to be the last thing someone will think to do based upon their conditioning that "this is just the game that everyone has to play after high school".

Meanwhile other countries have figured out how to provide free healthcare AND free university level education. It's possible to want the entire society to be healthier and smarter and be willing to pay higher taxes to achieve that goal.

The issue is, where do you draw the line for what qualifies as "destroying company property"? The case itself was about concrete truck drivers who let their concrete harden, wasting it. In the lawsuit itself, they specifically say "we took measures so no trucks were damaged, but the concrete was wasted".

So now you have a precedent that companies can say "oh no, we have veggies/concrete/anything perishable, if you strike--it will be wasted and you'll be 'destroying company property'".

That's the entire point of a strike, dude! You point out "hey, if we don't work, your business literally fails".

Right. I don't think straight up vandalism should be protected, but if, for example, restaurant workers refused to work then a lot of food will likely go bad. The union shouldn't be liable for those kinds of losses.

No but if you were in that position, then you would know if it influenced your vote. And if it did, the ethical thing to do would be to recuse yourself from the case. And if not, then not.

I mean obviously conservatives are going to believe Justice Thomas when he says it didn't influence his decisions, and it might not be reasonable to expect liberals to believe that. On the other hand, liberals seemed to have no problem with Hillary Clinton getting paid $250k per speech to deliver speeches to banks.

correct me if I'm wrong, but the Clinton's did not get paid for speeches while holding office. Bill gave speeches starting in 2001 after W. took over. Hilary gave speeches when she wasn't Secretary of State.

And sure, some of those speeches were to banks. And sure, those banks might have been paying for those speeches in an effort to make the presumptive future president look upon them more kindly.

But none of that happened WHILE she was holding the keys to their freedom. None of it while they were in a position to directly wield their power or influence. So maybe let's support cracking down on all the direct lines to abuses of power before worrying about the more tenuous ones.

Correction, I just double checked the order and it's actually as follows:

Yeah, I'd be cautious with who you work with. Some companies can be really pushy and will try to rush you.

We want to get a battery eventually but they are pretty fucking expensive (and we had to replace the roof as part of the project), so currently we are doing without.

One thing I'd keep in mind is that solar credits CANNOT be used to get a tax refund. They can only decrease what you owe in taxes. My understanding is that you have 10 years from installation to claim these, but not sure.

Correct, the current tax credits for solar are non-refundable, so you will only benefit if your income is high enough to have enough tax owed.

And even if you have a tax liability that can be reduced by this credit it still isn't guaranteed because credits get applied in a certain order and that order does not necessarily benefit you. This is especially evident if you have children.

The order that credits get applied is generally:

1) The non refundable child tax credit
2) Other non refundable credits
3) "Payments" which includes Federal withholding, Miscellaneous tax payments you sent in (people who expect to owe will often send in four quarterly payments) and then Refundable credits (which can include the child tax credit if there was any leftover from step 1)

So in a scenario where you have 3 kids ($6,000 of child tax credit), and based upon your income your tax (before credits) is $7,000.

Now you might qualify for $10,000 of residentially energy credit, so you'd think "great I can use 7,000 this year, and 3,000 next year!". In reality your child tax credit will get applied first, reducing your remaining tax to $1,000, and then you get to use $1,000 of the energy credit and roll over 9k. In that scenario you've still reduced your tax before payments to $0 so you're still getting all of your withholding back which is nice, but you'd have gotten a larger chunk of change back immediately if you were allowed to use 7k of the Energy Credits to reduce your tax to 0 and then use the child tax credit to increase your refund by 6k instead of decreasing your tax by 6k.

(edit: This entire scenario is wrong, at least for this specific credit. See following post)

I see this problem often, especially with the Adoption Credit. There are many preparers who don't know this so they calculate their refund as though the credits got applied in any order of their choosing, rather than the specific order determined by law.

(#NotOfficialTaxAdvice #DoYourOwnResearch)

The best thing you can say about it is that it gives you an opportunity during the year to take opportunities that will cause you to earn more money without worrying so much about how it's going to be offset by higher taxes because you've essentially already paid off that potential tax with the credit you have waiting on the sideline. (And if you keep your withholding high you'll get a nice chunk of change back from that too!)

I feel like the biggest reason critics don't like this movie is that it's really made with fans of Mario in mind. There's a lot of stuff in this movie that isn't even really properly introduced, just assuming you are already acquainted with the world and the characters in it and their associated gags. I was thinking about the "blue shell" gag, for instance; if you've ever played Mario Kart, you get it, it's a funny little joke/reference. If you've never played Mario Kart, there is absolutely no context to that moment whatsoever, it's just a guy yelling "blue shell!" and attacking. It makes no sense. The movie is rife with that kind of stuff which has to make it a hard watch if you're not invested in the Mario universe. Similar movies don't really have this problem - Sonic 2 for instance has plenty of easter eggs and Sonic-related stuff in it but it tells a fairly traditional story that you don't really need to be previously invested in the universe to get. SMB really foregoes nearly all worldbuilding and normal storytelling in favor of just assuming that you already kind of get it.

I honestly liked "blue shell" better when it was just the guy driving the tank/kart. That to me was a quality reference of a blue shell that destroys everything in it's path. When it went full 'blue shell' and directly did the from-the-game thing I thought it was too on the nose. It's like it interrupted it's own reference to say "now let's stop for a second and REALLY make sure you understand what we're doing here".

But that's all consistent with "kid movie" stuff.

I'm not sure I understand the 'misguided' thing. People are upset at him that he's doing good things because he gets a lot of views from it? That's been my impression the past couple months anyways.

"Oh no, someone with 145,000,000 YT followers is popularizing doing good things! He's just doing good things for views, and we only want good things to happen when nobody is watching!"

It's a baffling take to me. Good things are good things. Yeah it would be better if healthcare was fixed and a bunch of people didn't to realize on a generous celebrity for their lift changing surgery or whatever, but it would cost more money than even he has to fix the system versus simply doing some good in it. But by all means I'm not an expert on why he's been getting flack for his deeds, so it's entirely possible I'm unaware of some element to it all.
