It's like, instead of gathering items to get more, you're gathering knowledge. They even said that Outer Wilds was basically a reaction to the disappointment of Skyward Sword. Saoirse took a real shine to her (partially because Teena calls her smart) but also because Saoirse has a background with seeing the good in "different" people and so she thinks Teena deserves a lot. I'm not sure when, but Teena might end up doing some field work soon. Her name was bandied about a bit at one point but nobody wanted her to help Jaime with the Bristol Township kids.
