I can't answer that without knowing the year, make, model and mileage of your vehicle.

It's a winter beater: 2006 Hyundai Santa Fe V6 2.4L with just under 100k miles.

He said he looked and thats what he saw

Oh no, I meant is what the mechanic said reasonable? Or is it just far out of the ballpark it doesn't make any sense and he's bullshitting me.

I'm bringing it to a Hyundai dealership for a second opinion ($20 diagnostic charge). I'm telling them the same thing I told this mechanic; that it's making funny noises, and I have no idea why.

So no one has an opinion on the harmonic balancer and serpentine belt issue, and whether or not the timing cover even needs to be changed?

If the timing cover does not need to be changed, and only the harmonic balance/serpentine belt, that's just $636.

Go ahead and get the timing belt done. A lot of the cost is the labor in being down into that part of the engine, so by getting it all knocked out now you'll save money when you do have to do the timing belt. Plus, depending on whether your engine is an interference design or not, preventative maintenance for the timing belt is a very good thing.

That's what I was thinking. Not sure why it costs $300 though, since everything is already off...

My car made noises, so I went over to a mechanic and got it checked out. He says (I'm paraphrasing here):
The rubber on the harmonic balancer has completely cracked, and the serpentine belt is all over the place, to the point that the serpentine belt is rubbing off on the timing cover. At the minimum, the belt and harmonic balancer should be replaced ($636). He recommends replacing the timing cover as well ($600), as it has wear marks due to the serpentine belt.

I asked if he's replacing the timing cover, how much extra would it be to replace the timing belt (owner's manual says to replace it in ~15k miles; might as well get it done now if it's cheaper), since he has to get to it anyway, and he said it'll cost an extra $300.

So............ does any of that actually make sense?

Should I get just the [A] harmonic balancer and the serpentine belt replaced ($636)? Get the [B] timing cover replaced also ($1236)? Or get both [A] and [B] and add the timing belt as well (~$1500)?

Varona said she regrets posting her photos online and worries that this now seedy reputation will follow her for the rest of her life.

As her family still fights to have the widely-traded photos removed, Varona said she struggles to lead a normal life. The teenager, who wants to socialize on Facebook, text or email her friends and apply to college, said she feels trapped.

For the now tech-obsessed generation, Varona said she wants people to learn from her story and not make the mistakes she did.

"I don't want this to ever happen to anyone else," she said. "Even after everything that's happened to me, I would never wish it on anyone else."

I'm pretty sure that any federal employee that still has to work during a shutdown will receive back pay after everything is back to normal. It's only the ones that are furloughed that may not be paid after a budget is passed unless explicitly authorized.

Huh... If it doesn't get authorized, that sucks.

They got back pay the last time it happened in 2013, so they very well could this time as well.

This always happens at the end of the fiscal year. We dont get paid for like a month and then get it backpayed.

Did I throw away money?

I purchased extended warranty on the following products for the following lengths in the past year:

*Neato Robotic Vacuum Cleaner - 5 years
I assumed that this complex machine will easily break within five years of ownership, so purchased it.

*Cast Iron Traveling Lawn Sprinkler - 4 years
I assumed the cast iron will rust and will make this sprinkler worthless, so bought an extension for $5.

*3D Printer - 3 years
I assumed a 3D printer is a very complex machine, and checked replacement parts for it... The extended warranty was cheaper than major replacement parts (like the motors, extruder, and the motherboard).

My techie friend is saying I wasted my money and extended warranties are complete waste... Did I fuck up?

IKEA. No joke. IKEA furniture is either 100% solid and worthy, or completely shaky and break after one move. You have to look at the furniture carefully and decide. For example, their BILLY bookshelves and LACK tables are indestructible.

Aside from IKEA, I advise going to a local furniture outlet or asking a friend for second hand furniture. If you must go retail, check out any of them; they will all screw you over. Note that furniture is 100% negotiable at these stores.

One thing to note if you go with the 30-year mortgage is that if you pay off only what you are supposed to, you will be paying a fuckton more interest than the 15-year which can make it quite a bit of a raw deal in the long run (almost 50% of the amount mortgaged will be payed extra into interest alone vs. the 15-year option).

But you get 15 additional years out of it...

For my current house, I'm only paying the minimum and planned it that way, because I knew I was going to sell it pretty quickly (and we are, within 5 years of purchase). We like it in PA, so if we choose to go to the VA site, we'll come back. So if we buy a house in VA, we're definitely doing the minimum possible again.

you might consider keeping your house and renting it out because giving up that mortgage is leaving a ton of $$$ on the table

Alternatively, we were thinking of moving to a different site in VA, so that they offer us the relocation benefit again, as I was offered a 4 year temporary position in the VA site. They would also make accommodations for my wife to work remotely. Then when we move back to PA, get another relocation benefit, and buy our final house.
