I repeatedly try to find dark fantasy (j)rpgs and it is quite a daunting task. Most tend to be very small independant releases though and I tend to enjoy the ones I find. I remember finding Undernauts: Labyrinth of Yomi and while some of the puzzles took a little bit of doing, it didn't feel as difficult as a DRPG should be. Sure I read up a lot about the game before I bought (just class stuff really and party ideas) but there are so many QoL options and a gimmick they introduce very soon into the game that makes most battles trivial.

Anyhow I don't want to just start listing off games I've played that are in that "grim-dark" vibe I'd prefer them to be more like rpgs than say something akin to Dark Souls or BloodBorne. I don't have the patience for that shit and just never had the parry timing down in my better years anyway haha

I remember Dragon Quest V and VI never came out in North America and fan translations came long before the official releases. At the current time I was just like well dems the breaks I first played Dragon Quest V on the Super Famicon with a fan translation. Thought it was great. I can't imagine DQ being too hard to read in Japanese but I don't know a lick about their languages. Kampai, Nani :P That's about it.

It should have been N64. On paper the N64 was quite a bit stronger. But those carts really held it back, and scared away a lot of developers.

As someone who was primarily on an N64 that gen and didn't get a PS1 until around 2 weeks before PS2 came out, PS1 takes this easily.

It's absolutely true that the price of the carts and the space made a lot of developers hesitate or jump ship. Final Fantasy VII being one of the most famous examples. The N64 still had Wrestlemania 2000 and WWF No Mercy. GoldenEye early many other obvious titles. I was definitely a Playstation guy and didn't get a N64 till later, but just Playstation really hit it. I do think both systems tend to look very ugly, now but I played Road Rash 3D on the Playstation 1 a year ago and that was still a good time. NHL '98 was actually probably better on the N64 now (I played that several years ago) because it was so frenetic and crazy. But I am probably the only one here comparing now late 90s hockey on those two systems. So I gotta stop.

I love SoBe. Strangely nostalgic to see these topics pop up here every so often. I just posted here for the AMPs but I don't have much else to say unless I just read the quotes off the caps on the old bottles I have. I think one of them sez "Say hello to my little lizard."

I think the Sobe Life Water may be out there somewhere, but pretty sure traditional SoBe is gone.

I remember playing Nocturne and hell even Digital Devil Story in the later 2000s and earlier 2010s and usually it wasn't the difficulty that got me it's that I'd just get lost and then not know where to go, which is a common occurrence in very old rpgs where the developers would try to "plan for that" and the whole "grinding" spiel too. Anyhow I never beat Nocturne not because it was too hard but I got lost somehow in a dungeon and never got back to it much like DDS1.

Anyhow I'll give pony seizures the benefit of the doubt for now. I like a hard jrpg (these can happen in modern days too) though obviously leveling and training out your battles can mitigate that or saving super moves etc. I won't sidetrack it,but I found some recent ones that feel like they can pack a good punch on hard but not just seem like BS. So this post is fit to print. (Sometimes hard is the highest difficulty, sometimes it's like Hell mode or w/e, I don't need to brag that much to play it on the highest one).

I do use an adblocker on laptop. It's more just a well that turned out to be a convenient thing after all that does help for shutting down ads primarily for youtube, but does work here.

Find a board with non topicality, also there are still smaller community boards where you could probably post anything you wanted. Granted the community; I guess would have to well like you or you wouldn't mind just going in cold.

Despite popular opinion there are more boards than just CE. But I am still kickin' along in that wild game of Life. I'm not leaving here by choice.

I did accidentally click on an ad on Gamefaqs on mobile and it somehow generated some intrusive ad page redirection during my posts. It was horrible but I solved my own problem eventually just deleting a bunch of shit from my cache I forget the exact setting/name.

PSX by far even still now. But the N64 certainly had its hits. I liked the stealth drop of the Saturn in the poll. Nice touch there. I used to own a Saturn from uhh 2004-2012 or so. Well around those later years the lens just stopped working properly which eh it happens but I thought I took care of it well enough. When I moved I just trashed it.

Whatever hits it big first is going to oft feel like the imitation, A while ago I learned Hydrox came out before Oreos but, Oreos made it popular (and probably better). I always thought Hydrox were a crappy knock off of Oreos. Anyhow. I don't want to say anything bad about Pokemon. I just wasn't at the age/timeframe to get into it and the hype surpassed me, but I prefer a little more story in my monster collecting even if it's vague.

I didn't do the research but SMT had Devil Children in Japan and Dragon Quest Monsters came out before Pokemon? Either way, ya don't have to be first you just have to make the biggest impression. Palworld was a big deal and I hadn't talked to a guy at work who really is into Pokemon, but he's like Palworld has still been better than recent Pokemon.

SMTV Vengeance seems like a much more complete game then base SMTV. Og SMTV was clearly hurt by time constraints as well as being confined to the switch

I spoiled myself on everything in the main story on the Switch version because I just wasn't going to play it anytime soon or get one. But it does seem like they filled out more of the story and is getting some better early press.

Zikten 1 had a brief English port that was removed (like you said) not sure why. I really liked 2, I was playing it on ZSNES lol and still have my old save game, but got lost in a backtracking mess and completely forgot where to go. SMT II has a really cool feel. Also fwiw SMT 1 got a fan translation for the PSX. I have it but never bothered to try it much. Just eh I know everything about SMT 1. I don't know as much about 2 because ppl just don't talk about that as much.

SMT V was ridiculed for being Persona without the heart (and was on Switch and didn't run well). Also had characters who didn't matter much (which in SMT was more about just combat and themes as opposed to actual story). Also When Persona or any SMT umbrella game came out it is was always SMT: that. Even Persona 4 came out being officially called Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4. It's around that time where that stopped being a thing.

I don't even know if I am getting SMT V: Vengeance yet, probably. I got Persona 3R sooner than I expected because of a Best Buy flash sale, but sometimes I just don't feel motivated. P3R is fun on hard on PS4 and runs flawlessly.....but I just stopped playing it for the time being.

T&A is one thing but.......hmm maybe not DmV.

What if you were only allowed flip phones. Do modern ones have better technology? I used a dual slider that I thought kicked ass until at least 2014. It had a slide out mini tactile keyboard. Internet was garbage, but it was so great for text messages and just using it as well a traditional mobile device.

I do want to know what the next rank would be after that. Feels like I've just been in a listless state though I know there are ppl with way higher karma than me.

I actually bought a Tony's Pizza last week and even spent some time solving a picture search. Tony's is well better than I remembered but still nothing to brag about. Less than four for a oven Pizza though, this is Red Baron territory.

NCAA Football '12 felt like an rpg actually. You had to call up recruits, try to tell them what they wanted to hear, make promises, increase your pipeline (lol) and the school's prestige star rating. All in a time limit with games to play or simulate. I am not explaining it well but that was the closest I ever got to an American Football game feeling like an rpg.

Just adding points to stats doesn't count imo. So any Madden is out. Even NFL Head Coach was just a glorified coaching simulator and never as good or interesting as I thought it could be.

No one wants to go back to the 40s or 50s anyway. This question does leave a lot open to interpretation.

Am I allowed to go back in time and be an adult? I think the 1980s would be a fun time. I don't want to go any further back than that though. I honestly liked growing up in the 90s but the later 2000s rapidly went fast and I was just depressed and gave up too many times etc.

I joined CE because someone told me about it on a board hunter board. I guess I was bored and checked CE again and stuck there for a bit.

It is a quarantine zone now, but the reason I joined is that Kbelf made a Discord she promoted on CE but you couldn't post during her boyfriend's band practice you know how that went. She also refused to turn off message alerts. That was the real kicker. She was probably insane, but would not use options provided.

All the CE rejects coming here, and well the ppl who never identified themselves as CE ppl. I meant to go to the ACKTUAL PotD, I hold no ill well to this board though. There are plenty of boards here. FANDOM CAN'T close them all.
