that's wild. i'm glad they still have the infrastructure to keep mail moving and such in some places.

so i'm testing the keyboard and mouse out now with the laptop and they seem good enough on pop.

the only thing that sucks is the super key is somewhere totally different now. i guess i could remap but i'll just get used to it.

that could be a fun project. i ended up using pop os which is a derivative of ubuntu so most of the stuff i do matches up with ubuntu support articles. it's kind of nice having a lot of support out there to reference.

so i purchased the hp chromebox g2 with an intel core i7-8650u 16gb / 64gb for $130.

plan is to throw it into dev mode, remove the write protect screw and get coreboot on it, use clonezilla on my current install to put it on a 500gb m.2 nvme ssd and slide that sucker into the chromebox. the point is to have a mini pc for use with my samsung m7 32" monitor because i'm currently using a laptop on it and the ergonomics of using a trackpad and a keyboard is kinda subpar. i'll attach a decent mouse and keyboard and be done with it.

overall the project will be less than $200 usd which is pretty ideal.

i just bought the cheapest keyboard and mouse from Amazon for this project. maybe next paycheck i'll upgrade if they're absolutely horrible!

you can do this. i was a vape fiend and i quit cold turkey nov 1, 2021. it's definitely hard (i went through periods of restless sleep and twitching) but it can be done, and you'll be so happy you did! :)

hey i appreciate that input. honestly i expect some more twitching and skin crawling by the time this is over but for the time being it's going pretty smooth.

i haven't told my immediate family yet because i don't want them to ask me about it every five (in calls, texts etc) minutes.

Go to the dollar store and see if they have those old fashioned peppermint sticks, they come in a little baggie, they are the hard ones that break up pretty easy when you bite on them, they are about the size of a fat cigarette and the menthol can help with the need to inhale vapor. It helped me at least when I quit smoking.

but I work in cybersecurity so Linux is pretty essential

i used to work data entry in an amazon warehouse and they had me on 6 days of the week doing 10 hour shifts.

felt like my life was literally gone after that, i eventually left of course because it was strange having work consume my life like that and there were other more lucrative opportunities for me thankfully.

but yeah warehouse work is often like that it seems.

nice! yeah the algos are good these days. the more you let it know what you like the more you should get out of it.

i could spend that $45 on other stuff that i actually enjoy instead.

we just need to figure out how to reverse aging and we'll be fine

ended up buying a core i7-8650U 16gb (ram) chromebox g2 today. i saw some last week going for $70 and those sold out but im a bit impatient, so i ended up spending $130 on one, which isnt like the worst.

probably will also buy a wd black 500gb nvme drive along with the usb-c enclosure to flash my install onto it with clonezilla, so that will run me another $50 + $20.

the whole project will probably be under $200 which is awesome. ill have a mini pc with better keyboard/mouse ergonomics on pop to hook up to my samsung m7 32 and have a perfectly serviceable pop laptop on the side.

some basic stuff that will be required

• opening the chromebox to remove the write protect screw
• installing coreboot with mrchromebox's firmware utility script
• opening the chromebox to drop the cloned drive in

also my laptop was under $200 as well, asus c302 with an m7 processor and 16gb of ram. nice aluminum unibody design, battery is serviceable and gets 10 hours still on pop os. 2.4lbs means it's pretty portable.

anyways cheap ass computing
