The irony of an unrelenting TERF not wanting to be called by the name she was given at birth is not lost on me, but if Im not mistaken, the whole origin of people referring to her as Joanne came from the fact that she would constantly search her own name on Twitter in order to harass anyone who said anything negative about her. So it all just leads back to her being an insufferable egomaniac.

The Gen Z slang thats mostly AAVE, seeped into white culture via gay appropriation (mostly through Ru Pauls Drag Race) can be off putting, at times, when its being used by white kids/young adults, but thats mostly due to the appropriation part, I think.

For me, though, the one that drives me absolutely up the walls is a local/regional one where people use of the word anymore to mean nowadays or lately. Examples of this would be like People are just too sensitive anymore, Its always so expensive to go to the movies anymore, or Well, anymore its like she thinks shes the center of the universe

My blood boils just thinking about it.

Both have one okay movie, one pretty solid movie, and one flaming pile of dog shit movie, so its hard to say.

The prequels benefit from having a singular cohesive vision driving them, but the sequels have much, much better visuals and dont overly rely on CGI the way the prequels had to.

They both have terrible dialogue. They both have enjoyable action sequences.

I think Im gonna hand it to the prequels, because even though the sequels have higher highs, they also have much lower lows, and The Rise of Skywalker is by far the worst movie in the entire franchise. I would rather watch all of the Ewoks movies again than sit through a rewatch of TRoS.

Eat_More_Beef posted...
I can kinda see why. Now, maybe I'm ignorant in the subject, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but women's wards aren't about keeping women away from men for safety, it's because the doctors/nurses that work on those wards are specialists in the anatomy of a biological woman.

You start dropping biological dudes in there, then you need more doctors for a specificity that is no longer specific.

Like, don't put heart problem patients on the cancer ward.

I apologize if some of my nomenclature is outta date. Just correct me if so and I'll change my wording.
This is sort of a misunderstanding of the NHS usage of the term ward. In the US a ward is like a department, a cluster of individual rooms for one or two patients all requiring the same kind of care and sectioned off from the rest of the hospital. In NHS hospitals, instead of having clustered rooms for individuals, generally have large rooms with 4-8 beds with privacy curtains and a single shared bathroom. These beds are under the supervision of a single head nurse, and the room itself is called a ward. Some wards are specialized (maternity, oncology, emergency, etc.) but even the general population are all placed in wards. Under the 2012 amended NHS Constitution, all NHS wards must be single-sex, with exceptions for certain emergency situations or wards for certain kinds of treatment such as chemotherapy.

This means that if you are admitted to an NHS hospital as a general patient, you are placed in a mens ward or a womens ward.

The new proposal would see that transgender women are not allowed to be placed in wards for women, meaning they would either be placed in mens wards, or they would have to have separate wards specifically for transgender patients.

Because human doesnt have the same linguistic/etymological roots and origin as man and woman. Human comes from Latin, man/woman from Germanic.

Interestingly the same root of the Latin version (also where we get the prefix homo-) did also make its way through the Germanic languages, and into English, where we get the term groom, as in bridegroom

Often the order itself is violent. It's not moral to uphold that type of "order". Having "peace" while these colleges and our government are complicit in and profit off genocide is not the type of "order" we should respect. That order is the problem and it's what the students are dissenting against.

It's straight up white moderate bullshit, the exact type of thing MLK was talking about and huge swaths of America have never at any point understood or agreed.
Its such a cliche at this point but its basically the its all part of the plan Joker monologue. The people who have built this order love it above all else and will do anything to protect it, even if the order itself requires that children have their legs blown off by drone strikes, and food aid workers are killed in their cars. Only its even more extreme because you dont even have to do something as sinister as threatening to assassinate a public official for everyone to lose their minds. You just have to set up some tents where they have decided you should not be allowed. One small toe out of line entitles them to bring the entire apparatus of state violence down on you with total impunity.

I think its true to some extent, that when faced with senseless, overwhelming violence and trauma such as is experienced during war, the human mind can have a tendency to search for some kind of greater meaning as a kind of coping mechanism.

I dont think it has any validity as an argument in favor of any particular deity or religion, however. Just because we tend to search for meaning in things does not mean that any such meaning is actually there.

Overwhelmingly positive opinion of the students putting themselves on the line to support the Palestinian people and protest the genocide being done to them. I could not be more proud of the way the vast majority of these very young people have behaved, and of their organizational discipline when dealing with counter-protestors, police, and especially hostile/adversarial media.

kind9 posted...
Possibly a stupid question but what are these protests at American college campuses supposed to accomplish regarding a foreign war? What are these students going to get done here in America? Why don't they just go home and play Minecraft?

Pretty much all of these Universities have either money invested in, or receive grant money from, sources tied to Israel, and in some cases defense contractors whose weapons are currently being used to ethnically cleanse Gaza. One of the main goals of these protests is divestment from these, and a transparent process from the school administrators in doing so.

Here, for example, is a page listing the overall goals of the students protesting at Columbia University:

https://cuapartheiddivest.org/demands

No.1 FINANCIAL DIVESTMENT
Divest all of Columbias finances, including the endowment, from companies and institutions that profit from Israeli apartheid, genocide and occupation in Palestine. Ensure accountability by increasing transparency around financial investments.

No.2 ACADEMIC BOYCOTT
Sever academic ties with Israeli universities, including the Global Center in Tel Aviv, the Dual Degree Program with Tel Aviv University, and all study-abroad programs, fellowships, and research collaborations with Israeli academic institutions.

No.3 STOP THE DISPLACEMENT
No land grabs, whether in Harlem, Lenapehoking, or Palestine. Cease expansion, provide reparations, and support housing for low-income Harlem residents. No development by Columbia without real community control.

No.4 NO POLICING ON CAMPUS
End the targeted repression of Palestinian students and their allies on and off campus, including through university disciplinary processes. Defund Public Safety and disclose and sever all ties with the NYPD.

No.5 END THE SILENCE
Release a public statement calling for an immediate, permanent ceasefire in Gaza, denouncing the ongoing genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people, and call on government officials to do so too.

I imagine those kinds of contracts would not fall under the same category since as performers you arent actually employed by either the venue or the promoter.

Leftist believe Covid was a government created event?

The idea (or umbrella of related ideas) that Covid is a global governmental conspiracy designed to foster dependence and compliance within the general population is itself reactionary, but its one that at least a few self-proclaimed leftists subscribe to. Jimmy Dore and his ilk come to mind.

I would say if anything the real leftist conspiracy regarding Covid is that health organizations like the CDC ignored actual data and safety recommendations from science and medical experts in favor of appeasing the capitalist fears of economic collapse, resulting in national policies (relaxing of stay-at-home orders, reduction of quarantining restrictions, loosening of masking requirements) that caused an excessive number of preventable deaths.

As soon as youre over the circle where you originally got your Shovel Claw upgrade, dig to pop an extra life container, then once you pop back up in the air you immediately fly to your left, and take the rocket on the platform there to the graveyard on top of Church Mountain. Fly forward and dodge the ghost to pick up the Skeleton Dog walking in a circle around the gravestone. Immediately open the menu and restart the level. MrToothHasYou

I think its mostly just a sort of cognitive dissonance or mental resistance to the casual slide YouTube has been doing from being marketed/perceived as a video sharing, quasi-social media platform, to an on-demand video streaming platform.

For the first part of its existence YouTubes emphasis was on the You part. It was a platform when you could upload videos to share with friends, family, and the whole world. Users were both creators and consumers, similar to contemporary social media platforms like MySpace, Facebook, etc.

Although users are still nominally able to upload and share whatever they want, the actual use-case for YouTube has shifted into that of a more traditional streaming platform: users are categorized into either creators or consumers, with marketing and financial models put in place to encourage and foster both populations (skimming enough money off of consumers via ads or subscriptions and paying just enough to content creators to keep them churning out content).

In this way YouTube is no longer different than any other ad-supported streaming service. The difference is that YouTube used to function more like traditional social media, and still has some social media identity since anyone can upload to it. I think people would respond similarly, for example, if they started getting pop-up notifications on Instagram and Facebook asking you to pay $15 a month to not get ads while scrolling through Reels. And given how many of these user-driven social media platforms are quick to follow YouTubes lead (see the Tiktok creator fund), it wouldnt be surprising to see stuff like that happening more and more in the future.

Grim stuff.

I didnt dislike it, but it was pretty forgettable. I liked She-Hulk as a character, but it felt like they never really figured out what they wanted to do with her, so the show just sort of meanders around until it comes to a not-really-that-satisfying conclusion.

I dont think it should have been that hard to make a good, funny courtroom procedural comedy centered around superheroes. Harvey Birdman pulled it off (albeit with cartoon characters rather than superheroes) with relative ease. If they had made She-Hulk like that, where each episode she takes on a different superhero lawsuit, with maybe some overarching plot sprinkled on here and there, people would be clamoring for a second season.

I guess what Im saying is, if the most memorable moment of your entire season of television is your protagonist twerking with Megan Thee Stallion your show wasnt written very well. Dont get me wrong, it was a funny moment, I laughed, I enjoyed it. But if thats the peak of your show you are in trouble.
