One thing that seems common in them is being 2D, but where the "2D" actually matters. i.e. you explore the castle/alien planet/etc not just going from room to room sideways, but you go vertically up or down as well.

Rather than having an overworld or world map connecting multiple "levels," the game tends to effectively be a single GIANT level. You could actually make an argument that they are the truer predecessor to an "open world" game in a way than something like Zelda (NES) was in this respect (at least, if you ignore the semantics of the entire "world" being a castle or a really cavernous section of an alien planet).

Said "single level" tends to be as tall as it is long, despite being a side-view type of game and not a top-down view. This tends to result in a world that is often very interconnected (often with some time-saving connections that you require a powerup to use).

They also tend to basically revolve around you exploring until you find a boss to defeat, and then defeat said boss for an upgrade that lets you explore places you couldn't before.

...You know, on that note. Megaman would actually have very good potential for being made as metrovania style game. I mean, if Capcom can be trusted to do so.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure multiplayer is all THAT great for a game like this, at least with regards to how multiplayer games work in the current age.

I mean, its a great option if you have a friend and want to play with them. But for modern style multiplayer... Its not complex enough (i.e. like minecraft or terraria) to really take advantage of that sort of thing.

In the original version of the game (which I bet many dislikers played), the gambit stores only had a tiny handful of "parts" to choose from early on, and only got a few more every now and then. It wasn't until almost the end of the game that you actually had enough variety to properly be able to use it, regardless of how many slots you had.

The real joke is that FF12 has NO AI. It just has a list of things that the characters will do when a certain condition is true.

This is arguably an improvement though over an AI that just does stupid things. Doing NOTHING is sometimes better than doing ANYTHING somehow.

Well, my opinion of FF12 might be better if my first experience was that zodiac/international/whatever edition. But honestly? Having to BUY a damn game mechanic that lets you tell your AI partners what to do seems kind of stupid, even in an idealized version of the FF12 combat system.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but the reason I found it at least to be trash combat was... it was basically a weak MMO combat system. Where you had to use a Final Fantasy menu in real-time. With the ATB system of prior games, you at least don't need to worry about where the character is moving and the default options usually have ATB pause while you are within the menu.

Haou Taikei Ryuu Knight (Lord of Lords Ryu Knight I think) has fairly small ones.

If you go all the way down to things that are basically exosuits that act like mecha, then there was... um...

I forget the name. It was one of those harem romcom things. Normally only girls can use them, but of course the protagonist is the one boy who is able to actually pilot them, and thus gets sent to an otherwise all-girl academy. Honestly, the mecha-armor itself was really awesome. But its otherwise a fairly lowest-common-denominator series by romcom harem standards.

Knights & Magic has some smaller exosuit things alongside the larger knight mecha. But I'd say to avoid the anime as its a total butcher (ESPECIALLY if you actually like, you know, the MECHA of a mecha series, since the anime's versions often look and work very differently from how they are described or illustrated in the LNs and manga).

The first Xenosaga game made use of mecha that were fairly small (those A.G.W.S things). The later games had you switch to full-size mechs though.

Maybe I'll think of something more later.

FF12 is bad at combat. Opinion. One I share with many people it seems. Blah blah blah various reasons failed attempt at trying to act like an MMO and horrible gambit system that was only at least somewhat fixed in a later release. Supposedly. Never played that international or HD version. Not gonna. Because its still little more then a crappy MMO and I'd rather risk my free time on games that might be enjoyable rather than replay something that was a failure the first time.

TC is free to feel however he wants.

Maybe. Probably on Switch if I do.

Depends on if they are updating the systems or if we are actually still stuck using the original D1 gameplay and mechanics. Its just gotten so much better since the original D1 that it would be a shame if they didn't implement at least SOME of the new stuff (cheat shop and making sure to use a newer build of the item world randomization stuff would be a very good start).

Technically, he has a point with regards to its ability to handle 3D things. It was fine at 2D, but it seemed to have trouble rendering polygon lines consistently (especially when a 3D terrain was moving slowly relative to the screen, you'd see the lines "jiggle" a lot).

Fortunately, it got a lot of nice games so we tend to overlook those flaws. Or, we play on a PS2 and just accept it with some nostalgia when we stick a PSX game in.

I think people just like consistency.

They adopted one book to movie for LotR.

They adopted one book into THREE movies for the Hobbit.

You can argue which one is better. A 1:1 ratio may potentially rush through things too much. A 1:3 ratio may potentially spend too much time mucking about with stuff that doesn't matter or inserting filler or changes. Depends on the book, really. But even if people might prefer one over the other, it may still rub them the wrong way if they aren't consistent with that ratio through a series.

Harry Potter SORT OF of got away with it because the books actually get a lot longer after the first few. And even then people complain.

There is also the concept (which can be true or false) that if you make a book into a single movie, you can accept that, yes, some stuff will get dropped or rushed, and thus you may be more willing to overlook such flaws as long as they aren't too glaring. Conversely, if they make it into 3 movies, then a fan might hold them to a MUCH higher standard since they clearly have enough run time to cover most if not all of the material.

To each their own, really.

I'll have to go with the Xbone.

Nintendo systems have some fun unique games, and if you are a heavy player of games they still make a good second console. If you play fairly few games on consoles but still enjoy playing a console sometimes, they can even make a good primary one.

Sony gets almost everything Microsoft gets, but also has fuller support from Japanese developers so it gets all the jRPGs and niche stuff.

And the current gen of just about any Microsoft TRUE exclusive is questionable at best.

But yeah, in real life? "Skimpy" armor basically came in two flavors.

1. Colleseums and other arenas. The crowds are paying to see blood, dammit, so you can't very well just hide it with armor. Plus, lets be honest. Some of those girls in the audience are totally just there to see the half-naked guys sweating and swinging weapons around.

2. Earlier history. Metal is something that humankind has generally been pretty slow to really find and refine for most of human history, and it takes a while for enough iron to get into a nation or empire for them to have enough to be able to make proper full body chain mails and plate mails. Particularly early on, most of it was used for weapons. And you would likely wind up with armor containing only a little metal, and most of its volume being made of cloth, hides, and wood. And frankly, when it comes to that sort of thing, you may as well just prioritize the center and leave the arms and legs fairly bare/with just limited frontal protection so they can move faster, since you won't be able to take a direct hit without injury anyway and its probably better to dodge or get hit with only a glancing blow.

And once you cover up whatever amount you can afford to actually protect, climate may dictate how much skin is showing on the rest of the body.
