If the purpose of that letter from the mom was meant for us to be more sympathetic, I think it backfired. She had a strong start at the beginning, blaming a combination of her son's disability and his medication, but then we get to the end and she starts to rattle off how everyone else in society is at fault and she just loses me.

Eh, I dunno. From your words I was expecting her to start rambling about vague issues that "made" her son the way he is but she did actually hit targeted criticisms of specific programs and the lack of access or effectiveness they had in behavioral management.

May...be? Usually the prosecutor would push for the defendant to plead Guilty to lesser (or some of the) charges in a plea agreement, though. I can't recall when someone went No Contest for a plea deal (because No Contest is essentially saying that the evidence against the defendant cannot be sufficiently overturned through a proper defense but you will not accede guilt; if a plea of No Contest were offered by the prosecution then they believe they have enough evidence to secure the Guilty verdict in the first place).

Hmm...seems like one of those things I understand in my head but never had a word for until now.

I'm not sure when pleading "No Contest" (or "nolo contendere" in Latin) has any function, personally, but I've never had to stand before a judge and make a criminal plea. I usually only see people do this when they're dead to rights anyway but I have no clue what it's supposed to accomplish because they end up getting max or near-max sentences.

What it always does: not accepting culpability but also not arguing the charges. Basically it's the "say nothing" plea essentially refusing to argue the case in any way and letting the court simply pass judgment. "It is what it is," in legal terms.

What is sealioning?

I investigate stuff like this in a private browsing window if I feel curious.

No one ever praises me for being fiscally responsible, they are just like "glad you can demonstrate a modicum of financial sense," and "no one deserves a prize for not fucking up."

Reminds me of some people across the parking lot at my dad's condo where one guy repeatedly tried to pick fights with people in his group loudly and full of slurs. Called the cops but they dispersed before anyone showed up. However the police went up to the unit and led someone out in cuffs so I'm thinking that dude had a warrant.

I have a hunch some people on this board believe all forms of competitive gaming are cringe.

I just have an adblocker installed in Safari. I'd rather use Chrome (it remembers which tabs you loaded in Desktop view and keeps them that way) but dumb Apple won't allow third-party adblockers on third-party browsers (I imagine).

At least Safari lets you designate which sites you want to consistently load in Desktop view. Close enough.

I believe the word the kiddies like to use is "shook".

Because it's seen as "you wouldn't have acted if you didn't see an opportunity." So people then point to other impoverished communities saying they could use some support but the guy at the top won't do anything because there isn't enough publicity in helping.

Maybe the last part of your post is fair to say but using his platform to show what sort of wrong is being righted still shines a light on something deserving of attention. Who knows, maybe it might inspire some kind of financial upswing from others who want to contribute.

Same thing happened with Romney. He actually had the belief that the party was being led astray and called them out on it despite seeming like the pillar of negative conservatisim prior to that.

Truth be told if Trump didn't accelerate things so quickly for angry right-wingers I do wonder if these figures that once acted like the stanchions of the Republican party's most disliked virtues would have tried to stop it. The gradual slide towards adopting increasingly hardline positions is how internal takeovers happen. Trump just brought us to the endgame in a single presidential term.
