Oh interesting! I just sort of assumed GAA2 would be roughly the same thing but resolving some of the lingering story threads. Maybe Ill jump right into that then. I couldnt play another GAA1 right now but I could definitely go for a good AA game! That was the entire reason I was excited about the package.

Thanks for the heads up! Wish I knew that going into it but I was trying to avoid actual coverage (outside of the scores) for fear of spoilers.

I wish I could read more of what is going on but I'm afraid of spoiling GAA2. Just finished GAA1 though and I have thoughts.

That was...really disappointing, honestly. Part of the issue was definitely inflated expectations. I saw all those glowing reviews and my hype got out of control. I actually went out and bought this on launch and I can't remember the last time I got a game on launch day.

There are just a lot of issues here. Part of it is the "game" part of this is...bad? I don't remember the AA games being bad games with good stories/characters, but I feel like that is the case here. Like this is the worst gameplay out of any AA game I've played (I stopped after AJ and AAI, but even those were leagues above this in my memory). It has been like a decade or so since I played my last AA game, but I remember the games themselves being quite fun. Like I would get stuck and need to think or some revelation would catch me offguard. It could be I'm more use to the gameplay but honestly I feel like this one was just really sloppily designed in comparison to the old ones.

For example, the multiple witness thing sounds cool but it is terrible in execution. AAI does something similar much better where you're looking for tells and it is this fun little mini-game that actually adds a bit to the court segments. Here, someone will say something, a giant exclamation mark will pop up and a different character will go "I AM MAKING A SCENE COUGH COUGH HEY OVER HERE DUDE COUGH COUGH". I don't know what the point even is from a gameplay perspective. It makes things worse. I think there is one example in the entire game where this pursue tactic doesn't immediately lead to the thing you need to counter, so it makes the gameplay more mindless than anything. You get to a testimony, the obvious pursue mechanic pops up, and then it leads to an obvious statement you have to counter.

I really like the idea behind the Sherlock mechanics, but I don't think they quite worked it into gamepaly well. I was having more fun picking wrong answers just to see what weird things Ryunosuke would say, but in terms of challenge there is none. You look around a small area at like 3-4 different things, and there wasn't one that I was ever really stuck at. And beyond this the game is easy in general, and I don't think I ever struggled to figure out what I needed to present when except for literally the final thing in the entire game. Even that wasn't that hard, but it was the first time in the game I had to think and not just immediately know the answer.

I think it was saved a little bit by the characters (who I really liked) and parts of the story (which I sort of liked) but even that wasn't great. Some cases drag on waaaaaay too long which I admit is an issue in the older games as well but it felt really bad here. In case 4 like the last third of the case is dedicated to figuring out the knife was thrown out the window which was a really fun revelation but I figured that out as soon as the Sherlock deduction extravaganza concluded. And then case 5 just wouldn't end. This was my least favorite conclusion outside of AJ from the games I played and I found myself just wishing the thing would end after it went of on like the eighth tangent I just didn't care about.

There were other things about some of the cases too that bugged me. Case 1 also dragged on towards the end. Case 2 felt small. Case 3 didn't really have a resolution (even though the end of the case was really gripping and I wanted to play case 4 immediately). Case 4 was a good filler case but did have that issue with the ending. Case 5 had some fun stuff but also some parts that I didn't care all that much about and it took a long time to get where it was going. Some parts of the story also seemed overly contrived for the sake of the mystery. For example, in Case 5 Susato making that hole in the wall and then being overly dramatic in telling us about it seems to be less in there for actual character development reasons and more in there to make the mystery more mysterious and not immediately obvious. Same thing with Gina not telling us her side of the story. I felt like this was a case that could've been resolved in like two minutes if it wasn't for the game trying to think of ways to hide information from us.

So...I dunno. I think it kinda killed my motivation to play through GAA2 right away now which was my original plan but I think I'd rather find something else for a little bit and come back to this. It wasn't a bad game and I don't regret playing it. Some of the characters were great and I liked Sholmes a lot. But I also think this was the most disappointed I've been in a game for quite some time.

Suprak has beaten The Great Ace Attorney Adventures

That was...really disappointing, honestly. Part of it has to do with how high my expectations were. I saw the reviews were amazing so this was the first game in forever I got on release day (technically I suppose I got two PS5 games on release day, but that was because they were bundled with the console I got).

I dunno. It wasn't terrible. I did really like a lot of the characters and parts of the story were pretty good too. But the actually "game" part here is way way worse than I remember any of the other AA games being, and that includes Apollo Justice or AAI. I actually stopped after those two so I haven't played the rest of the PW games on the DS, so I don't know if it got worse or not. But I remember getting stuck at parts, having to look through the evidence and figure stuff out. That never happened here. It was really quite boring, and on top of that parts of some cases dragged a lot where you basically know what happened for the last third of the case but you have to solve a series of increasing simple testimonies for things everyone should've figured out an hour ago.

It wasn't bad. But I think I'm going to stop after the first and maybe come back to the second later. It certainly wasn't what I remember the AA games being. SAD.

Unfortunately anti vaccine idiocy does tend to cut both ways although Id say thanks to Trump there is more right wing dumb dumbs than left wing at the moment.

And the Green Party tends to be full of lunatics which is a damn shame. Jill Stein bring a nice example of that.

Howie seemed pretty good but I say that admitting I didnt dig much into details so Im hoping Im not immediately corrected with eight different ways that he was crazy.

  • This is an interesting case because I feel like there aren't all that many places to go. There are three rooms so far that you can look into, but the game is making the most out of them.
  • Both Bif and Pavlova leave, and her room is unguarded. DUMMIES. Time to rummage.
  • Sholmes is actually a super interesting character. He isn't some complete dunce, which I feel like is the lazy way to write him. Like they could just make him dumb, but he isn't dumb. He notices that the log isn't filled in. Ryunosuke also notices that, but what Sholmes notices is that the other days are filled in, even if all it says is "all clear". Nice catch, Sholmes!
  • We investigate Pavlova's room, but don't find much. The case is open, meaning her venomous snake is around here, waiting to kill again.
  • AHHH WE'RE GONNA CRASH
  • AHHH WE'RE NOT GONNA CRASH BUT MY THEORY HAS CRASHED AND BURNED
  • When the ship does an abrupt stop, the stuff on the shelves gets all thrown to the side (like they were before) and the lock on the door slides shut. AHA! That's all the info I need, baby. Sholmes and I are ready to solve this.
  • So clearly the ship came to an abrupt stop last night. That explains the stuff being tossed around and the door being locked when it shouldn't be able to be locked. Why didn't they notice. Well, because they were all knocked out. The game has been stating, over and over again, how everyone has a foggy head and Ryunosuke can't remember what happened after eating his chicken dinner.
  • NEW THEORY: someone drugged the chicken, killed Kazuma because he was awake when he shouldn't have been, and stopped the ship to create the locked room. I'm gonna guess captain or chef maybe? No one we've seen yet.
  • Uh oh we're found in Pavlova's cabin. She wants us immediately arrested for breaking and entering and going through her stuff. She...has a point actually. Gulp.
  • Bif is all about having us arrested and Hosonaga unfortunately can't do anything because he doesn't want to keep getting punched in the face by the captain.
  • Oh hey Sholmes is here! SAVE ME SHOLMES.
  • Oh Sholmes is saying the murderer went through that vent linking our rooms together. I bet he's going to say it was a snake. SORRY SHOLMES that theory is so three posts ago.
  • Yep pet snake. Called it.
  • Why would Kazuma state he saw a "speckled band". Does he not know what a snake is? Even if he didn't know what a snake was, his diary should state "OH GOD THERE IS AN EVIL GIANT WORM CLIMBING THROUGH MY VENT AHHHHH" not "weird I see a speckled bad huh".
  • Oh. Ryunosuke points out the snake isn't speckled but striped. So it wasn't even the snake that came through. So what did Kazuma see?
  • Bif is taking this snake on his face thing really well.
  • Oh hell yeah another logic dance thing. This should be fun.
  • Pavlova is acting super concerned during Sholmes' wrong logic deduction. Did she actually kill Kazuma? PAVLOVA I TRUSTED YOU
  • I wonder if there's no trial this case. Seems like this might be close to wrapping things up here.
  • Haha after Sholmes finishes everyone just stares at him in wide eyed shock. Don't worry Sholmes. I'll fix this.
  • Everyone is impressed actually. Hey guys I want to do the logic fix thing. Someone call him dumb.
  • Oh phew, Susato calls him dumb. Thanks Susato, you are a great judicial assistant after all!
  • Luckily Susato is the world's foremost snake expert and points out they don't drink milk, so it wouldn't work as a reward, and they don't have ears, so they wouldn't hear Pavlova whistle. Susato busting out that big snake knowledge.
  • "No hands, no feet, no EARS?! These creatures are so inept as to be practically useless!" That's the big three, alright. Snake owners in shambles right now.
  • Well the thing she's pained by is clearly her scratched hand. But lets look around some instead!
  • Interesting. She is missing an earring in one ear. I know that isn't the right answer, but I wonder if that is a clue for something else.
  • We now have to identify her actual pet and it lets me look at Strogenov. Oh, I am absolutely picking him first just to see what the dialogue is.
  • So the pet we were looking for all along wasn't the snake...but a kitty! Just how many pets did this lady sneak on board, jeez.

  • I love the idea of the "this dude is almost right but just missed a couple of stuff so you fix it" as a gameplay mechanic here
  • I worry this might be a bit limited as we go. Like this works well as an introduction to the concept but will they be able to ramp up the challenge in later cases? I dunno. There is only like four things to pick from when you're trying to observe something and the one you need is painfully obvious in this practice example, and it might be hard to build up on that in later cases. For now though this seems like a really clever idea.
  • Oh no I've discovered a huge flaw in this system: wrong answers are hilarious
  • Like if I pick buttons for what they need to cut off with the scissors, Ryunosuke goes on a hilarious tangent about how they must've never learned to unbutton their coat and now they're trapped in there. Selecting beard or hat give equally great responses. So now I'm going to have to save before this happens every time and select the wrong answers just to see what the additional dialogue is. CURSE YOU GAME FOR BEING WELL WRITTEN.
  • Bearded man is actually ballerina woman, and she's brought a pet with her. Nice.
  • I was worried this bearded man's secret identity was going to be the twist in the case which I didn't want because it was too obvious. Glad they were just using it as a tutorial twist, honestly.
  • We bring up the speckled band and the whistling to Pavlova and she goes "OH...uh I dunno nothing about that." People in this game are terrible liars.
  • If Pavolva doesn't have a dog in there, I'm going to be disappointed.
  • Pavlova is running away because of the terrible conditions in the ballet she was a part of, and wants to sell that tiara so she can start a new life. I have no clue how this ties into the main plot of the case yet, but it is an interesting b story for sure.
  • Sholmes says this creates a conundrum and Susato agrees. Uh...conundrum to what...exactly?
  • Oh interesting. The boat didn't go to a port last night, which is when she supposedly boarded. I should probably figure out the timeline to this as its gonna be important.
  • She says something along the lines of "an angel descended from the heavens, bringing grace and beauty to the stage" to explain how she got on board. That is less an explanation and more some sort of coded message spies say to identify each other. "An angel descended from the heavens." "The purple monkey flies at midnight."
  • Hm she's being cryptic about this for some reason. Maybe she invented the helicopter and is shy about it.
  • She's afraid she's going to be thrown overboard if they discover her pet. Lady, if they let you sneak on board somehow mid journey and are hiding you in a room so you aren't discovered, I doubt a little dog is going to be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
  • She won't tell us what the friend is just yet, but eliminates cat, dog and uh chicken (great guess, Sholmes). I'm now worried it is a venomous snake or something and it killed Kazuma accidentally.
  • And now we get thrown out, in a literal sense, by Mr. Stroganov. Rough.
  • END OF PART 1 HOORAY
  • Early hot predix: Pavlova's "friend" killed Kazuma and it is a venomous snake. That was the hissing/whistling Kazuma heard and the "band" he saw. I hope I'm wrong because they made it a little too obvious by how they brought up her friend and how she eliminated all the obvious animals right off the bat.

Universal Pre-K for 3 and 4 year olds
Community College tuition-free for 2 years
Paid Family and Medical Leave
Dental, Vision, and Hearing added to Medicare
New federal health program for those in the "Medicaid gap."

Apparently Sanders sent out a letter to the Senate committees about it and Medicare age is also being reduced to 60 as well.

Yes straight into my veins please.

Chapter 2 Part 1 Still I Think
  • Sholmes and Ryunosuke chat for a while and Sholmes comes to the conclusion I wasn't really the person who did it PSYCHE
  • He also reads Kazuma's diary that gave us the clue I assumed would clear me. Susato doesn't body slam him. Jerk.
  • The thing that exonerates me is kind of weird. "Oh yeah there is something strange dangling from the vent." Who writes that in their journal at 1:30 AM instead of, I dunno, going to do something about it? Kazuma should've spent less time detailing the weird things in his vent and more time trying to figure out what was coming out of it to kill him. "132 AM I now see feet emerging from the vent 134 AM they appear to be carrying some sort of bludgeoning device 135 AM OUCH OUCH OUCH 137 AM will be writing my dying message soon"
  • Ugh dying detective is in this chapter too? He was far and away my least favorite character last chapter in terms of design. Like he just doesn't stand out compared to everyone else. I was hoping Sholmes was taking his spot as the detective/clue gathering role here because I like him way better.
  • Hosonaga: "I was so stunned when I saw you, my heart stopped." Hey don't put that on me, I'm pretty sure that's the consumption coming to get you.
  • Why does he still stand like a waiter if he's supposed to be undercover as a sailor? He's holding his arm out like he's still supposed to have a napkin draped over it.
  • Yay Hosonaga reacts to my student pin badge! It truly is an Ace Attorney game, after all.
  • Hosonaga is nice enough to let me, the suspected murderer, investigate the next door cabin. You guys are really loosey goosey about what you let your murder suspects do, you know that?
  • Oh he was supposed to be Kazuma's bodyguard. Well A++ job there, he died two weeks into a six week voyage to a place he was supposed to spend years at. Things couldn't have gone worse if you were here to kill him yourself.
  • Although probably their fault for assigning bodyguard work to a detective. Those are two different jobs, guys.
  • Wow the minister of justice was worried Kazuma might get assassinated. Probably not the best idea for the ship to stop at the place where an assassin was known to be at, then. Next time skip that port guys.
  • It is kind of weird and interesting they were assuming he'd be the target of assassins already. Kazuma must've been a bigger name that I was assuming. I just thought he was like a really good student, but getting an A on your literature class usually doesn't draw the ire of hitmen.
  • Well, either way Hosonaga gives us permission to leave the cabin to investigate. I would think it wouldn't be up to him since he is there on bodyguard duty and the captain apparently gave him orders that he can't leave the scene of the crime so clearly he isn't in charge. But whatever, new place to go!
  • Ryunosuke is not impressed with the size of the hallway in first class. Jeez, it's just a hallway.
  • Bif Strogenov welcome to the awesome name club.
  • Why does Bif have some sort of racing stripe going down his face?
  • Bif tells us the person in the room next to us is Mr Grimesby Roylott. That's a guilty man's name. Take him away, boys!
  • "Do not think about it! He has nothing to do with murder of student boy" Nice try, Bif. We just heard that line last chapter and they had everything to do with murder of student boy er I mean teacher man.
  • His reasoning is Roylott is a western gentleman and wouldn't do something so torrid. Some English gentlmen and gentleladies could just do anything in turn of the century fictionalized Japan, couldn't they? Next time I rob a bank I'm doing it in a top hat and a monocle and everyone will just assume I'm too fancy to have done it.
  • Ryunosuke ponders the fact he's never heard anyone over there the two weeks we've been at sea. Clearly this is where the assassin that recently came on board comes into play.
  • We ask him he noticed or heard anything weird last night and he gives a good strong Russian no. But Ryunosuke notices a second where he wouldn't meet eyes with him. This is where a magnatama would come in hand. LET ME AT THOSE PSYCHELOCKS.
  • We hear a scream coming from the cabin next to us, and Sholmes bursts on the scene to break it down. This dude is here to solve crimes and kick down doors and crimes are too hard to solve so lets focus on that door thing.
  • The door isn't locked. "Then how the deuce can I dispatch this muscular urge? What, pray, CAN I kick?!" I love you Sholmes, never change.
  • We burst into the room to find that dude who is clearly the Russian assassin holding a pair of scissors. The room is all thrown apart (or at least the bookshelf is) and there is no woman to be found. I bet she is in the dresser and that was the dresser Kazuma was telling us to look in! Crime solved!
  • Maybe Kazuma went to investigate what was going on and this dude killed him for his trouble. Stupid Russian spies, you ruin everything.
  • Oh nevermind the dresser is wide open. Whoever we heard scream can't be stuffed in there.
  • Oh wait maybe this is the missing ballerina woman in a really bad Russian costume. That would explain the scream! Although I feel like they'd be able to recognize a female voice talking to them, so maybe not.
  • AH THE TRUNK JUST MOVED! There is either a very cramped ballerina in there or maybe a kitty. One or the other.

  • Okay, I love Sholmes. He's been here for two minutes and he's fun as hell.
  • He deduces all sorts of crazy stuff and claims I am a Russian assassin with 16 kills to my name, and that I killed Kazuma when he found out. I wonder if all of that will be true, and its just that he confused who the actual assassin was.
  • Susato, for some reason, believes him. Hey, dumb dumb, we went to school together up until two weeks ago. You should know I'm not from Russia.
  • Speaking of that...why the hell is she even on this boat again? Kazuma was there for the special training in the UK and I am there because I am a no good stowaway that's been living in a cabinet. What sort of special dispensation did Susato get?
  • HEY STOP FLIPPING ME YOU JERK
  • Sholmes apparently is so good at detecting that they write stories about him in this fictional universe too. I hope in one of the sequels Phoenix Wright is playing a game that involves a fictionalized version of Sholmes that they call oh, I dunno, Sherlock Holmes.
  • The person writing all of these is his biographer, Dr. Wilson.
  • Uh, is that the same Dr. Wilson that died last chapter? I had no clue that was supposed to be the "Watson" in this game. Dang, dead in chapter 1 without even a single line of dialogue. Poor guy needs a better agent.
  • Sholmes claims he deduced two things immediately upon entering the cabin. ONE the door was locked so the killer had to still be inside and TWO the victim was Russian probably because of the Russian writing on the floor. Well, 0 for 2 isn't so bad.
  • Sholmes apparently doesn't see race or samurai swords or those Japanese characters all over the wall. Great detective work.
  • I sort of love the idea that Sherlock Holmes is this horrible detective that just bought into his own hype because of the books written by Watson. It is an interesting take on the character I haven't seen before and he's a lot of fun so far.
  • Sholmes claims the word on the floor is the Russian word for wardrobe. Based on his earlier thoughts I'm just going to assume this is the Russian word for "ouch ouch I'm dying" and Sholmes actually can't even read Russian.
  • Oh fuck we finally get a full picture of Kazuma's face. NO KAZUMA WHHHHHHHHHHYYYYY
  • I actually quite liked Kazuma last chapter so I'm sad he is now gone and replaced with Susato, who I haven't liked as much so far.
  • HAHAHA the picture of the guy Sholmes thinks I am is some super old Russian dude who looks nothing like me. I am having flashbacks to the SNL doppleganger skit.
  • I'm finally getting stuff added to the court record. Hey Ryunosuke maybe add some of the actual evidence literally all over the floor if you can.
  • Front story on the newspaper is crazy assassin disappears from Shanghai and back page is Russian ballerina also disappears from Shanghai. This newspaper might just be "People Missing From Shanghai" weekly.

More Chapter 2 Thinks:
  • Oh everyone is yelling at me that I'm the killer. Hey, game, you just did this a chapter ago.
  • What if this entire game is Ryunosuke just having to defend himself from murder accusations? And then in the final chapter it is revealed that Ryunosuke is just Japan's most successful serial killer of all time.
  • They're being super weird about showing Kazuma's body. I'm beginning to think Kazuma isn't actually dead for whatever reason. The corpse is gone by the time Ryunosuke comes too and everyone is just like "oh trust us you killed someone". Maybe this is just an elaborate prank or training exercise.
  • Oh like a minute after I posit that, they have a flashback where they show his body. EXCEPT they don't show his face. So clearly Kazuma killed someone, dressed them up as himself, and then scurried away in that huge vent to the left of the dresser in his room.
  • Ryunosuke is very clear that he somehow slept through everything that happened and has a pounding headache. Oh, and Kazuma brought him dinner the night before. So clearly Kazuma knocked him out somehow. But for what purpose?
  • Susato bodyslams me when I start investigating. Well at least in this game we don't need to worry about any suspects overpowering us.
  • I don't get why the hell I've been sleeping in the cabinet for the past two weeks. There is an enormous fucking deadbolt on the door. Lock the door, let me sleep on the floor, and then if someone knocks I'll climb in the cabinet. Kazuma, you asshole, this is the last time I go on vacation with you.
  • I convince Susato I didn't kill Kazuma because the cabinet I was sleeping in had a "please don't open up there isn't a human in here" sticker on it, and it was still sealed when people came in to look. Duh, guys, I pointed that out immediately.
  • Oh wait it didn't work because she thinks I might've used some sort of conjuring trick to put the sticker back on. That's what I get for making that quarter appear out of her ear that one time.
  • Also, the sailors on this ship are straight up idiots. Maybe don't lock your number one suspect in the room where all the evidence is. If I was the killer I'd rip up that tape from the floor and put in one the ceiling or something. Change that message on the floor so it said "Ryunosuke didn't do it". You gotta do a better job securing the crime scene here, people.
  • I get control of Ryunosuke and try to immediately show Susato my student pin, as is tradition in these games. I'm sad there is no unique dialogue for that at all. BOO.
  • "Grandmother told me the Japanese don't make jokes." Wow what a weirdly specific racist grandma you have there, sailor. "Grandma told me the Japanese people have six toes on their right foot" well fuck your weird racist grandma and give me some actual useful information dude.
  • The sailor gets all weird when I ask him if he noticed anything weird last night but doesn't actually say anything about it. Rude.
  • "It's quite a small bolt" THAT'S A SMALL BOLT?!?! It looks like something you'd use to keep zombies out. Definitely not what I imagine when I think of a small bolt for a door.
  • There are rules right next to the door. "No weapons or pets" Dammit there goes bomb turtle, my pet turtle that also doubles as a bomb in emergencies.
  • You know it is kind of weird how unemotional Ryunosuke is about this. His best friend was just murdered and he didn't shed a single tear. Maybe I actually am the killer.
  • I can't remember anything that happened after dinner at all. Yeah, Kazuma knocked me out with dinner somehow. Probably fed me a whole bunch of turkey. Stupid tryptophan you were always the most devious of the amino acids.
  • It is nice that I get these little checkmarks showing what I've already investigated. Helps me eliminate the duplicate investigations I used to do when I wasn't sure if two things were related or not.
  • Kazuma's sword is just laying on the floor. So much for that "no weapons" rule. Maybe if I investigate the chest I'll find a kitty.
  • I'm worried how nothing is being added to evidence. Guys come on throw me a bone here. I can't defend myself with zero evidence in my pocket.
  • There is a half broken mystery trinket on the floor next to brick color skidmarks leading to the body. This also is not added to the court record. GUYS. GUYS THIS IS A CLUE. HELLO. RYUNOSUKE?
  • The bookshelf is ransacked and a statue of the god of the sea is thrown on its side. AHA! The guilty party is clearly...Athena! She attacked Kazuma in a jealous fit as she and Poseidon were rivals. Take her away, boys.
  • Susato puts all the books in order again because she hates a mess. I hate tempering with evidence, Susato, so it looks like we both can't get what we want here.
  • Neither Ryunosuke or Susato know what the message on the floor is supposed to say. The letters are huge and it is fairly long so whatever Kazuma was dying of he sure as hell took his time dying from it. I wonder if he had to redip his finger halfway through like "oh shit I'm out of ink for my dying message give me a second here".
  • I'm assuming it is a fake clue and likely says something like "Hello I am Kazuma and I was killed by the kid in the closet" because him crawling to the desk, knocking over the ink, dipping his finger in it, and scrawling this long word on the floor while the killer is ransacking the room is too silly of a thing to make sense.
  • Susato flips me when I try to read the last, incomplete entry in Kazuma's diary. Privacy is important, she yells. "Just find the person who killed me you moron" a weird ghostly voice retorts.
  • There is clearly some sort of crucial clue in there I'm supposed to not know until later and this is their stupid way of delaying it. I hate Susato a little more now because she is a straight up terrible investigator.
  • There is a huge vent above the cabinet that connects to the next door cabin. Well, looks like I know who the guilty party is. Whoever the hell is in the room next to us! Take them away, boys.
  • AH! Herlock Sholmes is humping the desk!
  • "You've noticed the man too, haven't you?" Well uh yeah the guys climbing on the furniture is kind of hard to miss. "You've noticed the monkey throwing banana peels across the room, haven't you?"
  • Oh cool I get to talk to Sholmes now. Time to make a new friend!

Tony your mistake is trying to apply logic to a situation involving anti-vaxxers.

What theyre saying is that all these COVID cases are actually just normal flu cases and the reason no one is taking about the flu or flu season is because there is a nationwide doctor conspiracy to push all those cases into COVID cases so the government can microchip you and watch you pee. Or something.

Yeah I picked up on Nosa too which is sort of why I just assumed Auchi was English-ized into something punny.

Auchi almost works better in English than Winston Paine imo.

Chapter 2 Thoughts and Musing and Thinkerings:
  • I did watch the opening movie because I was interested in seeing who the victim was, but it doesn't even show us. Rude!
  • I love Herlock Sholmes and he hasn't even really done anything yet.
  • This is giving me wacky Professor Layton vibes for some reason. Probably the Britishness and the weird outlandish technology.
  • Sholmes finds a dying message written using the victim's hand on the floor. I'm going to assume it reads "11037" when translated.
  • The fake Maya Fey is there, but no one else other than some burly sailors. I don't like where this is going and I have to assume someone important is dead.
  • LOCKED DOOR MYSTERY. Best kind of mystery.
  • Sholmes finds someone trapped in a cabinet and immediately assumes they're the murderer even though there was some sort of paper taped to the outside that looks like it would rip if the door was opened. Sholmes is no Holmes, that's for sure.
  • Oh it seems like I'm waking up all groggy. Am I the person who gets framed again? THAT JUST HAPPENED GAME GET A NEW IDEA
Ok, that's it for now. I'll likely update again tomorrow.

Very important Case 1 Thoughts:
  • I'm going to forget like half of these names because my memory is bad and I don't have the game open in front of me, so bear with me here.
  • Aw man, I was totally wrong about this case. I was like 100% sure it was the other teacher guy from the college who was like "oh hey uh you don't want Kazuma representing you because er um he's uh uh SHUT UP JUST DON'T LET HIM DO IT OK!" Turns out he just really, really wanted to make sure Kazuma could go to the UK regardless of the outcome of the case and didn't care if I was erroneously found guilty. Jerk move, guy, but ok. I like your mustache so I'll ignore your transgressions for now.
  • Also, my back up theory was also wrong. I thought it could be Kazuma if not mustached teacher guy. During the first flashback I thought it was weird that Kazuma was like "welllll guess I should be hitting that ol' dusty trial" and then Wilson dies two seconds later. Way to leave at the most suspicious time, friend. It would also explain why maybe the mentor didn't want him representing me, if he had already deduced Kazuma was the killer.
  • I like my theories better than what actually happened, which was pretty straightforward and exactly who everyone thought it was from the start. Stupid uh...Jezaille? Am I remembering that right? I was some J name I never heard of before.
  • Ryunosuke's weak hand slap objection where he then looks awkwardly at his hand made me giggle the first time I saw it so A+
  • I also do love that this game keeps the tradition of letting you pick the joke answers for stuff, giving you funny dialogue, and not penalizing you for it. Thanks for that, game. I was stiffling actual laughter on an airplane because I didn't want to look like a crazy person.
  • Is the waiter/detective guy dying of lung cancer? Like that's way too fucking dark for this game, but then again "coughing up a worrisome amount of blood every two minutes" is less a funny quirk and more the sort of thing your doctor talks to their patient about while they explain how the treatment isn't working
  • I really like Nosa. The animation with his kid is super cute. Also Kyurio deserves to have his stupid coin stolen. If he couldn't work out who stole his coin when the other people in the restaurant were either dead or across the room, that's on him. "I wonder which of the one other persons at my table took my stuff" yeah huh no clue
  • Jezaille was fun. She's clearly coming back at some point because the whole "aw shucks she is just going away and maybe facing justice somewhere else" is such a huge dangling plot thread that they have to give it a tug at some point
  • And uh oh is Kazuma dying next chapter Mia Fey style? He goes "hey I really need to talk to you about something" and Ryunosuke goes "sure" and then waiter guy is like "help help its metastasized to my bones" and Kazuma goes "oh haha we'll talk about it later". Fat chance, Kazuma. That's code for "I'll tell you if you can find someone that can channel spirits". I know how this series works.
  • I did shake my head at the game going "Ryunosuke's power of observation is extraordinary and that's how he recognized the drop of blood on the plate that wasn't there in the picture". Yeah, cool. Hey, about about you notice the body was facing an entirely different direction when he was shot and wasn't turned around until after dying waiter brought you to the storage room. Feel like that should've been noticed first.
  • I did like this case a lot for the opening, but I also felt like it was a little long and that third chapter kind of was padded and not all that fun. There weren't many testimonies to go through and everything is kind of figured out by that point. I feel like "the coin was under this steak even though it was supposedly at another table" didn't need eight segments to get through and should've been fairly obvious to everyone in the courtroom.
  • Ryunosuke is great though. They already gave him some great character growth and we're only one chapter in. It was nice the game let Ryunosuke to shine on his own and he wasn't just relying on Kazuma to save him the entire case.
  • First chapter cast was fun. Loved Nosa and his baby. Loved Kazuma and Ryunosuke. It was fun seeing Winston Payne again even if he is going by a different but equally punny surname. Jezaille was a good ominous villain. Judge was great. Dying waiter was a little boring but he had his moments. I guess I didn't love dying waiter's design just from a visual standpoint. He seemed boring while everyone else was big and vibrant. Still, good start to the game.
  • Preliminary chapter 1 character ranking: Ryunosuke > Kazuma > Jezaille > Nosa > Auchi > Kyurio > Judge > dying waiter > mustache man > fake Maya Fey who didn't really get to do anything this chapter > that one officer at the start of the case who was VERY rude to me and called me a murderer before the case even started
  • I think that's all my major stuff from the first chapter. Liking things so far!

I wasn't actually planning on doing a playthrough for this game, but there are like six other ones right now so I thought it'd be fun to throw in my own as well. I have actually just completed the first case so you aren't going to get quite the in depth reaction for that case, but I'll try to record my thoughts going forward as I play.

Some notes:
1) I haven't played an Ace Attorney game since Apollo Justice. That means please do not talk about anything after that as I do mean to get around to playing those games some day and I don't want them spoiled.
2) Don't spoil stuff that is coming. Don't be that guy (or girl). Don't hint at things. Don't leave ominous clues. Don't do anything that. If you are typing something and find yourself thinking "will this spoil something?", just assume it will.

Ok, on to first case thought!

This is why Tony was bad at mafia, he doesn't know how to sharpen his spear to pierce an argument. He just hammers all day.

Is he usually wrong? No, but he throws the kitchen sink

Tony is so frustrating in these topics because hes usually almost exactly right and then drives a truck through nuance and then no one listens to the thing he was trying to say in the first place.

Hotel Dusk is okay, it won't be for everyone, I do think Kyle Hyde is a great character though. Ghost Trick, on the other hand, is a must-play, great game

These are pretty much my thoughts exactly. I thought Hotel Dusk was a lot of fun but if you told me you hated it I wouldnt be surprised either. Ghost Trick on the other hand is brilliant and if you havent played it yet Id suggest tracking it down somehow.

I kinda quoted that strangely. Basically Im saying I agree with Chris, even though Im all for a primary challenge.

The only hesitation I have there is a true, genuine, actually good progressive ran the same year as Sinema for governor and got absolutely smoked. We can do better than Sinema because Arizona isnt West Virginia but it also isnt one of the good states yet.

Kelly has been fine though and we should be able to find someone around his level at least. Literally boring generic Democrat is even better than Sinema.

She MUST be primaried. 100%. And don't tell me we can't do better. We did better in Arizona already. Mark Kelly is better than Martha McSall--err Kyrsten Sinema. It's easy to be confused by the two. I'm not sure they aren't just the same person at this point.

Pretty sure hes referencing this! She is both horrible but objectively better than Martha McSally in every way. I get your frustration but you went too far imo and I hate Sinema.

lol Sinema is so cartoonishly offensive at this point that Im led to two conclusions: Shes intentionally taking heat for the rest of the party, or shes deadass and the Democrats big tent includes genuine monsters stopping progress on a whim, and I want no part of it.

I dont think these things are exclusive.

I warned everyone I talked too she sucked before she was elected. Her voting history in the house was abysmal, but all people would focus on was her wacky outfits and the fact Mike Pence was forced to swear in a bisexual.

The actual progressive candidate in Arizona running for governor got destroyed because Arizona still sucks. Thats why Sinema won.
