Topic | What's the most technically impressive arcade game? (Day 33) + PC 1980s final |
UF8 05/08/24 11:08:57 AM #14 | on a racing game note vr mario kart arcade seemed decent graphically, shame it's such a short and limited experience (which is why i decided to roll with ace attorney instead) actually now that i think about it i wonder how good modern takes on series known for having good graphics historically generally are *checks the last densha de d arcade game* eh, not as good as i hoped for shame stuff like ace combat never came back to arcades, like ace combat 7 would kinda go hard as one |

UF8 05/07/24 1:00:27 PM #8 | gen 1 electric isn't exactly my favourite gen for electric but the fact that gen 6 dragon of all things is still here with a slew of active downgrades in design for mega forms and some of the least inspiring generational marquee lines ever is certainly something else |

UF8 05/07/24 12:37:20 PM #250 | on a music anime note i'm still hoping that some day i can coerce anyone else to watch monster sonic and its associated media (not actual monster strike though), or show by rock's many seasons, or wug, or re:stage, so i'm not just the lone token fan of them here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDb22Bqayac |

Topic | Switch 2 officially confirmed |
UF8 05/07/24 6:23:09 AM #11 | i've been thinking a bit about what exactly would nintendo realistically even be trying to prioritise with the switch successor recently, if we were to cast aside all of the teasers, leaks and speculation thus far and i had some thoughts i feel like there's a chance they'll be looking to basically just do a switch pro with it at this point because it's a big risk to start fresh with their game library now given the direction its competitors have gone, and more than the upgrades in terms of specs, i feel like they'll be looking to sell the switch 2 primarily with a focus on bringing back all the services the switch has been sorely missing (streaming services, livestreaming integration...). they could honestly just try to go all out in decking the neo switch like it's an iphone now lol and see if that lands enough to be a sustainable model moving forward lol |
Topic | What four visual novels belong on the Visual Novels Mount Rushmore? +TIEBREAKER |
UF8 05/07/24 1:20:53 AM #39 | YU-NO Ever17 Fate/Stay Night Steins;Gate much as i'd like to fit higurashi/umineko on i just don't think they had enough of an impact. and bigger series in the west also just have the issue of having too many entries to pick from without an overwhelmingly clear frontrunner to point to as "the one that did all the work to popularise the series/genre". nearly went with clannad admittedly though since that's pretty safe to call the biggest key title at least (just... still not really by much). arguably it is bigger than some of these four but i think these had a bigger impact on the medium overall. oh yeah and ddlc is maybe worth bringing up too, but i feel like the genre's moved backwards in mainstream appeal since its release if anything (early to mid 2010s, any vn project would get funded at a moment's notice, now not so much), despite how much of a hit it was with stream-based audiences for a time. |
Topic | What's the most technically impressive 1980s PC game? (Day 32) + PC 2020s final |
UF8 05/07/24 1:12:40 AM #9 | since flight simulator 4 is probably the correct answer and getting on the poll anyway i decided to have a quick look at other options here and i feel like voting for Rollercoaster Rumbler just for the novelty of there being a rail shooter literally on rails lol (and it honestly does look pretty impressive) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VM9z1ga_egI |

UF8 05/07/24 12:12:30 AM #40 | by the way jokes aside it's surprising how many releases (at least on my wishlist) are coming out specifically this week just to recap there's these https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5lwM2NYdQw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx2yLI2jSz0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7SoesYgyS8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7J089XoFDfE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOu3Fv84CdA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QP0fi0_exe4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhB6dLh9nn4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mZfcz9XtYVQ https://sekaiproject.com/news/qualia-the-path-of-promise-coming-to-nintendo-switch-on-may-10-2024/ https://vndb.org/v50674 of this list i'm still most likely to pick up rainbow cotton personally but i admittedly didn't know that plushie in the sky and rabbit & steel were this month too as things stand i'm probably going to pick up all of them eventually besides pacman/corponation and maybe the vns |

UF8 05/05/24 5:24:09 AM #11 | oh right Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown was 2019 that's my vote sorted (weather effects are still legit for it) (speaking of weather effects, i did also just think of the Just Cause series and while i'm not voting it, i do think it'd be pollworthy) also shoutout to this game nobody played that i also just remembered called Voidrunner. it looked INSANE at the time (especially for an indie project with virtually no funding) and i'm still sad it flew entirely under the radar and bombed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNWPRh4EBrc |

Topic | Can you consider a game to be "good" if mods are nearly necessary? |
UF8 05/05/24 4:43:23 AM #10 | one very niche example i'm personally invested in is 200% Mixed Juice, a short pseudo creature collecting retro jrpg that happens to have online pvp. i really like it, though i've also been involved with doing a balance overhaul patch for online use which i consider "essential" for it specifically, rebalancing close to everything and making a few more units playable, rectifying some overpowered unit issues that were never patched out officially i would definitely still say i consider the game really good without it though, especially since it was only done to iron out balancing quirks for one side of the game, obviously it's not an issue for the singleplayer (save for missing out on some minor/boss units being playable). it's an odd matter though since while the singleplayer IS the main draw for the game, the main reason the multiplayer isn't a bigger one is just because the game has no playerbase... still yeah i don't think a must-have mod necessarily covers the full scope of "this game cannot be played without it", it can depend on what it's for. if you are playing something where the core gameplay experience is a hot mess without them then yeah that'd be something i'd very much be reluctant to praise |

Topic | Best Pokemon Generation by Type, DAY 14: Gen 3 Steel vs. Gen 5 Ghost |
UF8 05/02/24 12:54:09 AM #5 | tough call since i really like Cofagrigus and the full Chandelure line (cofagrigus and lampent specifically both probably make my top 10, maybe 15 mons period) but gen 3 steel is 100% bangers to me. Metagross best pseudo legendary (beldum and metang are fun too), Aggron best pseudo-pseudo lol (and aron and lairon are even more fun than their counterparts tbh), i have a real soft spot for all the classic regis and Registeel's mixed distribution makes him my favourite to use personally, i also love all mew clones and Jirachi is no exception, and then Mawile is just my favourite of the lot it's a shame for either type to bow out before round 2 but for me i really hope it's steel that can stay |
