TopicCoca-Cola drops charges vs girl who stole from vending machine during earthquake
UnfairRepresent

Desperate times call for desperate measures, or so the saying goes. But how desperate should times be when youre allowed to break into a vending machine to get a drink? A recent incident in which evacuees did just that in the wake of the Note Earthquake prompted a debate about whether any time is desperate enough.

It all started with an article posted by Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun, which initially reported the incident on January 6. In it, the newspaper reported that a witness had testified that a vending machine at Anamizu High School had been broken into and its drinks and cash stolen.

The article wrote that, according to the 30-year-old witness and the school, the incident had occurred on the night of January 1, shortly after the earthquake, when about 100 people had evacuated to the school grounds in the wake of tsunami warnings. Around 8 p.m., the article stated, four or five men and women in their 40s or 50s pulled up in a car with a Kanazawa license plate, entered the school, which was reportedly locked up but accessible because its windows had shattered in the quake, and, citing an emergency, broke open the vending machine with a tool that looked like a chainsaw and stole the cash and drinks inside.

A shrill noise echoed throughout the school, the witness reportedly said. The evacuation center became embroiled in panic, and nobody could stop them. The principal of the school, Kenichi Shimazaki, was reported as saying, This incident is unforgivable because it made the evacuees feels unsafe. Together with the article was a photo of a vending machine that appeared to have been opened up and ripped apart.

However, another newspaper, Hokkoku Shimbun, presented a differing account of the events. On January 6, they reported that the alleged group had wrenched open the vending machine with a tool and set out the drinks for the evacuees.

The newspaper reported speaking to the people who broke into the machine, who said, Were evacuees ourselves, and we checked with the people in charge whether we could break into the machine to supply drinks. According to Hokkoku Shimbun, the local police were not considering it to be criminal activity.

Perhaps as a result of the questions that arose from their first article, and the Hokkoku Shimbun article reporting contrasting facts, the original Yomiuri Shimbun article disappeared with no notice from the newspaper (though it is preserved in Internet archives), and on January 20 they published a new article stating that Hokuriku Coca-Cola, the company that manages Coca-Cola vending machines in Ishikawa prefecture, filed a criminal complaint on January 18. According to the article, a representative said, We had not given permission for the machine to be broken into. Just because an emergency situation has occurred does not always mean such actions are allowed.

Notably, this article omits any mention of cash being stolen, but reports that the drinks were removed and distributed to the evacuees, and the machine was destroyed without permission from the company or the school. The prefectural police, it was reported, were speaking to people associated with the incident in order to determine if it was a case of property damage.

It then continued by stating that a group of four or five men and women, citing an emergency, broke into the vending machine around 8 p.m. on January 1 using a tool, destroyed the interior, and removed the drinks to distribute to the evacuees. There was no further mention of a car with a Kanazawa license plate, though the article did reiterate that the school was locked up, in spite of broken glass providing access
.
The article lastly reported that at the time, there were no teachers or administrators on campus, and therefore no one to give permission to break into the machine. The principal said that he only heard after the fact from an acquaintance that the expensive vending machine had been broken without permission.

A follow-up article was then published by Yomiuri Shimbun on January 23, which reported that a woman confessed to breaking open the vending machine and apologized to Hokuriku Coca-Cola by phone, stating, I wasnt in my right mind after the earthquake. There were people who had evacuated with their children, so I came up with the idea to give them water. Im very sorry. Apparently, she also offered to reimburse the company, but a representative from Hokuriku Coca-Cola is quoted as saying the company will not be demanding repayment for damages and wont be filing a criminal complaint against her, because it was a case of unusual circumstances right after an earthquake.

It was also revealed by Yomiuri that two other vending machines were also pried open and their contents distributed to the evacuees, but the companies that own them, Megmilk Snow and Meiji, have not stated whether they will file for damages or not.

I havent played Scholar of the First Sin, just the PS3 version with the DLCs and Aldia. Im aware of some of the changes, but how do they affect the game? Ive heard that enemy numbers were generally reduced, except for bizarrely the area before Smelter Demon which was room that needed an enemy reduction the most.

I know Heidis Tower has passive knights that leave you alone unless you provoke them, and an extra dragon. Not sure I like the change to make Dragon Aerie skippable and to drastically reduce the number of enemies in the Dragon Shrine. Battling up the Shrine stairs was a great challenge, especially since theres no boss at the end. Ive read theres a ton more petrified statues; not sure if that limits what paths are available to you more than the original game.

They changed a lot. It's kinda hard to give a brief rundown

Here's a list of changes from the Wiki

http://darksouls2.wikidot.com/scholar-of-the-first-sin

And that's not even conclusive. On top of graphical changes, bug fixes and new content. They flat moved enemies around, changed bosses, items.

It's a whole new experience. Basically Scholar is what the devs WANTED the game to be like on launch.

The mystery behind the disappearance of Amelia Earhart over the Pacific Ocean has fascinated people for years. But after a recent deep-sea sonar survey, some closure to the final chapter of her life may be forthcoming.

87 years after disappearing somewhere in the Pacific Ocean, Deep Sea Vision, an ocean exploration company based in Charleston, South Carolina, claims to have found something that could be the wreckage of her plane.

16,000 feet (4,877 meters) below the sea, an anomaly that the company believes could be the Lockheed 10-E Electra aircraft she was piloting, appeared on their screens.

Some people call it one of the greatest mysteries of all time, I think it actually is the greatest mystery of all time, said the companys CEO Tony Romeo, a pilot and former US Air Force intelligence officer. We have an opportunity to bring closure to one of the greatest American stories ever.

The discovery was made with sonar, a machine that sends a soundwave out into the ocean and detects the echoes generated as it bounces off of objects in its path. Repeated applications of sonar can generate something like a picture in sound waves. The sonar was sent from an autonomous underwater vehicle called a Hugin 6000.

Deep Sea Vision surveyed 5,200 square miles (13,468 square kilometers) of ocean, and managed to detect the anomaly 100 miles away (161 kilometers) from Howland Island.

CNN reports that this position was along the path that Amelia was expected to arrive on following her ultimate departure from Papua New Guinea.

We always felt that Earhart would have made every attempt to land the aircraft gently on the water the sonar image suggests that may be the case, said Romeo.

Romeo says that the venture is going to return to the area and investigate the anomaly further, hoping to get a visual confirmation of the serial number NR16020 printed underneath the wing of the 10-E Electra. This could be possible because at 16,000 feet below the surface, objects can be preserved for long periods of time.

If he and his dedicated team can get a confirmation, they hope to be able to get the plane out of the ocean and bring it to the Smithsonian Institute for future exhibit in the Museum of American History.

I don't know the verbage but yes these laws exist and it comes up a lot across multiple states. It's usually things like "You need permission from the state in advance if you intend to feed more than 5 people" and bollocks like that

Some kind of "Well if you give homeless people food and water then they will loiter" logic

People literally call the cops on dudes feeding the homeless

There was a case a while back where a cop actually went undercover as a homeless dude to bust some folks who were feeding homeless people in a park.
