It's funny you say that cause I was about to edit my post. I get additional laughter from it because my wife also grew up in similar conditions and the comparisons she pulls from the show to her childhood adds to my enjoyment/shock/whatever.

Yeah, my wife claims Fiona is a carbon copy of her older sister. Her sister can and has done some of the stuff Fiona has done in the show.

It's pretty funny seeing her react and facepalm at some of the stories.

It's even funnier cause we both grew up in poverty. But she grew up in "white poverty" like in Shameless while I grew up in ghetto poverty closer to what you see in Everybody Hates Chris. I never realized how different they were until watching this show.

Yeah it's not awful like what Dexter turned into but it's definitely lost it's original spark in the later seasons. It's still fun to watch but it just all sorta blends together after a while. It's harder for them to shock you cause they already set that bar so high.

This was my main problem with Dexter. I felt like they used some of their best material the first few seasons and made it harder to keep interest without jumping the shark.

Like, I was surprised that they went with a rival killer plotline right from the first episode, and then making it a "the killer is my brother" plotline in the same season. Those could have both been entire seasons later on in the show. I felt that by Season 4 they've used up all their good material. I mean, if it weren't for the last 5 minutes of the Season 4 finale, that could have been a great series finale if not for the soft reset.

Honestly, my main problem is that the characters don't experience any growth. They make the same mistakes over and over again. The actors were great, there are definitely solid moments, but the plot isn't amazing.

Also the fill-ins at the beginning are so cheesy.

"Hi my life is shit, I'm throwing up in a toilet. Here's what you missed!"

To be fair, I love the fill-ins. It's unique and lasts less than 5 seconds. Reminds me of the Simpsons couch gags with the different scenarios they come up with.

My wife grew up in a neighborhood with people just like the Gallaghers (some in her own family) and she said it's pretty realistic that they'll keep falling into their own mistakes over and over again. She says it's the cycle of poverty and why those families never improve. You'd think they'd learn after all the crap happens to them but they fall right back into familiar patterns.

I don't know why it took me so long to get into this show. I just got done with season 4 and it's amazing how fast-paced the show is, how little filler there is, and how much crap they try to get away with to shock you. It's like, nothing is too taboo for that show. You also really get a feel for the characters.

Also, once you've thought they've tackled every possible plotline or character development with a particular character, they take it one step further. Specifically with Frank and Fiona.

Here's my question, though. Without any spoilers, does this show drop in quality like Dexter did in its first 4 seasons? I've heard that's a recurring issue with long-running Showtime shows. Dexter's the only other Showtime show I've seen.

The Rocket Launcher in RE5. I know I could get more ammo for it, but I was always afraid I wouldn't have the ammo when I needed it.

Also, since master ball was covered, I'll add a Max Elixir in Pokemon games. I always saved those for Elite 4, then rarely ended up actually using them.

The backup item in Super Mario 3D World, regardless of what it is. If I lose my item, I usually end up finding a new power up box before remembering to activate the one I have on standby.

How can they pay Social Security taxes without a Social Security number?

There are multiple methods. They can use a fake social security number (deceased person, etc). There is a legal method that is often used illegally, most commonly seen in universities but available in other areas, where you are allowed to create a "temporary" social security number for international people with visas, that can only be used within your company. People with current or expired visas can use those numbers to apply for jobs. Most jobs don't vet those numbers so they never catch on that the numbers aren't allowable outside of a specific set of circumstances.

Those are the two most common methods I'm familiar with. Both can and have been used to get jobs, pay taxes, and even file taxes every year.

"Out of the nearly 11.1 million undocumented immigrants estimated to be living in the U.S., Pew Research projected that there were about 8 million in the workforce in 2014.

Nearly half, or 3.4 million, of those workers paid Social Security taxes, according to 2014 estimates from the Social Security administration. And while the agency doesn't have a figure for how much this group paid in taxes that year, it said that unauthorized immigrant workers and their employers contributed $13 billion in payroll taxes in 2010, its most current estimate."

By comparison, almost half of Americans don't pay income taxes because they are either too poor or claim too many credits.

The problem with UBI, and it will always be the problem with UBI, is that it's a "feel good" solution that people can propose without ever dealing with having to make the hard choices of what someone deserves. It's impossible to define UBI because the people supporting it would be horrified if they had to actually make the choice as to what defines "universal basic needs".

I won't get into a large discussion on this as this deserves its own topic, but in the US, we already have a system of "allowable living expenses" in the areas of housing, transportation, food, healthcare, and childcare that is based on 1) where you live and 2) how many live in your household.

This amount is used in various social services programs like SSI and medicaid and often used in bankruptcy cases to determine how much of a person's assets to take away.

For example, I looked up my "allowable living expenses" based on the various criteria for my state and that amount came out to roughly $2600, meaning that under UBI I would get $2600 a month for my entire family/household.

Granted, the current system is very generous (it allocates $1000 for just car ownership costs alone and I don't pay anywhere near that much) and would have to be fine-tuned more to work. But the system does exist.

I liked the scene tbqh. Leia is a Skywalker, yet has never had the opportunity to do anything Jedi-related, or nothing "supernatural" as her brother has done.

Considering she's never had any Jedi training, you weren't gonna see her in any lightsaber battles anytime soon. I thought this was a cool way to remind you "hey, that's right, she can use the force". If nothing else, it was a nice send-off to her character that likely won't be in Ep 9.

Part of the reason is that the public discussion shifted away from the systems and more towards the cause.

In the 90s/2000s, everyone was talking about anorexia, bulimia, cutting yourself, drugs, and suicide.

In the 2010s, they were seen as warning signs and other symptoms of anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and PTSD, so the conversation is now about that. Schools and colleges focus more on educating about knowing when you are depressed and getting help.

Part of the reason for this is because the symptoms have escalated from actions that hurt one person (i.e. anorexia or self-harm) to actions that hurt many (i.e. school shootings). It's a much more serious issue now that there are larger number of casualties so there is more talk about what is the root issue at hand and how can it be fixed.

The only reason it worked in the show was because the President was actually a decent human being who had the best interests of the country in mind and was willing to accept responsibility and learn from his mistakes. Realistically, that's not the kind of person we would elect and the person would be ran over by all the corruption in Washington (as he actually did the first couple of episodes).

For another more extreme example, (House of Cards spoiler) Peter, the only legitimate decent person in the show with a chance at election, was literally killed for his naivete.

it seemed kinda like a rehash of previous ideas

If that was what you didn't like about it, then you might not enjoy the rest of the season. For the most part, the next few episodes use tech that are pretty similar to, or took inspiration from tech seen in prior seasons (you'll see a lot of similarities to White Christmas and the episode with the dude jealous of his wife). They are fun, but they seem to be taking similar concepts and telling different stories with them.

As for your thoughts on the first episode, I read an article that addressed this. It said that the other characters have wronged the dude in some way, so they felt, at least in some way, that they deserved their fate, so they learned to accept their new placement. The new girl, though, was the only one to not do anything bad to him, so she didn't feel like she didn't deserve to be in there. That, in combination with her superior coding skills, gave her a bigger motivation to get out than the others which helped her come up with ideas.

The whole "split dressing rooms/locker rooms/bathrooms by gender" thing is pretty outdated, honestly. The only reason we keep it around is because it's tradition and people are adverse to change (just look at the freak outs in Oregon just for removing gas pumping attendants).

Our theater group in college had to use a shared dressing room due to lack of space, so whole casts of men and women had to change in front of each other, sometimes fully naked, in between scenes. We'd practice changing in front of each other during rehearsals just to get used to it and get all the awkwardness/gawking out of the way so it was business-as-usual during showtime.

You could always tell who the freshmen were because they were either really shy trying to change showing as little skin as possible, or busy gawking at every other guy girl trying to change. But usually after one or two sessions, everyone stopped caring.

People really make it a much bigger deal than it is.

People with struggling or failed marriages are the ones more likely to speak out, so we only tend to hear the negative side. People with happy marriages don't go around boasting about it as it makes other people bitter, but there are plenty of happy marriages out there.

You found real love is why, I have the same thing with my relationship, but not everyone has found a good partner or partners. The issue is many do rush into marriage and then divorce not long after once the honeymoon phase has ended.

Its also that many only hook up with people who sex is all they really want from a good looking person, not that they have similar goals, hobbies, or thinking.

With my relationship we are almost always on the same page, we keep communication open, and are honest with each other. Many couples just dont want to be alone and just get comfortable with who they are with instead of making an actual bond.

This is a good point.

Even as I typed what I did above, I could already see the eyerolls from other posters who read all that lovey-dovey stuff. I used to be ashamed of speaking about my wife that way because society has conditioned us to joke about the chains of marriage and people who romanticize it are naive. But then I matured the f*** up and stopped caring what other people think about my relationship. If you love your marriage, don't be afraid to tell people.

People hear too much about the crappy marriages and build up an unfavorable opinion in their head because they don't hear enough about the good ones.

When I was single, I wanted to be married. Now that I'm married, I'm truly happy and feel sorry for single people.

There's nothing that compares to waking up every morning next to a woman who knows you inside and out, cares about you, and faces every major life hurdle with you. The same face I see right before I go to sleep at night as we talk about our day knowing she will support me and be there for me, and I with her.

If you aren't feeling that with your marriage, you are either with the wrong person or you have several marital issues to address.

I get some people like the single life, but I hated it. I would never willingly go back to it. I know I married a treasure and I work hard every day to keep her. As she does for me. Marriage is in no way a sham, just that some people rush into it and don't really know the commitment they are setting themselves up for.
