Maybe I see a difference between "useless crap" and "was useful once" or even "is useful but people would rather spend more money for new things."

The thing is, many of those things weren't that useful in the first place. How often did your family host a 12-person dinner?

Even for Thanksgiving, my parents didn't use the 'good china'.

To many ppl, that's what heirlooms are. Many 'vintage' couches are just pieces of shit that's been refurbished.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/goodwill-overrun-stuff-millennials-gen-151400853.html

No one wants the family china. At least not the generations set to inherit it. Tom Verde writes in The New York Times that millennials and Gen Xers are uniquely resistant to the influx of furniture, kitchenware, and general stuff that comes with their parents' downsizing. They can't even donate it.

"We are definitely getting overrun with furniture and about 20% more donations of everything than in previous years," Michael Frohm, the chief operating officer of Goodwill of Greater Washington, told The Times.

An entire industry has sprung up around figuring out where the stuff will go. Professional move managers help seniors downsize and dispose of the belongings their grown children won't take, charging about $50 to $150. The full cost of the service, which may include an estate sale, can reach $5,000 or more, The Times reports.

It's not all that surprising when you think about it. For one thing, younger generations might not have the space to store table service for 12. The average age of homeownership has been pushed back, and the number of millennials who own homes is at a record low.

Experts say it's partly economic — 20- and 30-somethings buckling under student-loan debt and having trouble securing work right out of school don't have the disposable income for many of the traditional life markers, like buying a home or getting married — but these grown kids may also have different value systems.

Consider some of the movements of the past few years:

-- Tiny houses are cheap, mobile, and have extremely limited storage. But that's not deterring the people flocking to more-limited living space. Even the multimillionaire CEO of Zappos lives in a Las Vegas trailer park.

-- Minimalism and capsule wardrobes. Marie Kondo famously jettisoned everything that didn't "spark joy" in her best-selling book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up." And one of the hottest trends in the fashion blogosphere in the past few years is the capsule wardrobe, in which you wear only a fraction of the clothes you own, ultimately aiming to isolate those you no longer need.

-- Early retirement. The way people retire is changing, and some people are doing it earlier than ever through a combination of aggressive frugality and extreme saving. As one example among many, take Brandon, who retired at 34 after years of extreme frugality. He told Business Insider he could hardly find ways to spend his money.

-- Renting everything. Many younger adults see the appeal of renting everything, including homes, phones, clothes, and cars. And companies are happy to help them do it.

-- Experiences over things. Psychological research has repeatedly found that spending money on experiences rather than tangible things makes people happier, an ethos embraced by 20- and 30-somethings, some of whom even cast aside traditional jobs and lifestyles to travel the world for years at a time.

In fact, Business Insider's Kate Taylor put together a list of the industries struggling most in the shadow of millennials' disfavor, like casual-dining chains, napkins, cereal, and golf. The younger adult generations want something different from their parents — and apparently, it starts with heirlooms.
Proof that Baby Boomers had too much money to spend on useless crap..

https://www.yahoo.com/news/charlottesville-petition-calls-robert-e-124700087.html

A petition has been set up to call for the replacement of a statue of US Confederate Army general Robert E Lee in Charlottesville, Virginia, with one of an anti-racist protester who was killed in the town during violent clashes. Heather Heyer, 32, was killed after a car was rammed at crowds during a white supremacy rally on 12 August at which she had been a counter-protester. A known white supremacist, James Fields Jr, has been charged with Ms Heyer’s murder in the attack that left 19 others injured.

The initial gathering of white supremacists and neo-Nazi groups was organised as a response to the planned removal of the statue of General Robert E Lee. Charlottesville’s local government had voted to have the statue removed from one of the city’s parks. Under Gen. Lee’s command, troops were allowed to raid towns and villages during the civil war to capture free black people for enslavement.

A petition to have the controversial statue replaced with one of Ms Heyer has received over 29,400 signatures. The petition, titled “replace Charlottesville Confederate statue with a statue of Heather Heyer,” was set up by someone named Kathleen T. On the petition website she said: “Heather Heyer was there to oppose their bigotry, racism, and violence. She was there out of peace and love. And she was killed for it.

“Instead of honouring with a statue a man who symbolises the worst part of America, lets honour a young woman who represents the best part of America. “Sign my petition to urge the city of Charlottesville to replace the Robert E. Lee statue with a statue, plaque or monument of Heather Heyer. Let's honour this brave woman who gave her life defending justice.”

After Ms Heyer’s death, white supremacist Jason Kessler, who organised the Charlottesville rally wrote on Twitter that she was a “fat, disgusting communist”, and said her death was “payback”. Mr Kessler initially said his Twitter account had been hacked, but the following day backtracked and blamed the offensive post on a mixture of alcohol and prescription drugs. Mr Kessler has said since the white supremacist rally he has been forces into hiding due to “a crushing amount of stress and death threats”
This would be fucking awesome..

TopicTrump response to News that 10 Navy sailors will Prolly die: 'That's Too Bad..'

https://www.yahoo.com/news/thats-bad-trump-response-news-10-sailors-dead-condemned-074646833.html

Donald Trump responded to the news that 10 sailors are missing after an American destroyer collided with an oil tanker with the phrase: “that’s too bad”. The navy said five others were hurt after the incident on Monday in waters east of Singapore and the Strait of Malacca. The USS John S McCain sustained damage on its port side aft — the left rear of the vessel — from the collision with the Alnic MC.

Trump, the commander-in-chief, was widely condemned after offering the curt response to reporters when told of the crash. VoteVets, an alliance of progressive military members, said: “This is a joke. ‘That’s too bad’ is more for your golf game not missing sailors.” Scott Dworkin of the TheDemCoalition said: “There’s a US military accident & Trump says that’s “too bad.” He must resign immediately.”

Breitbart, the far-right news website, run by Steve Bannon, who was sacked as chief strategist last week, reported that Trump had not been briefed about the collision. Quoting a source with “direct knowledge of these matters”, the website reported that senior staff had failed to notify Trump of the incident.

“What went wrong is the president was not briefed and was not kept abreast as the incident developed,” the source said. In particular, the article pointed the finger at national security adviser General HR McMaster and General Kelly with whom Bannon is said to have had particularly strained relationships.

“This is part of a bigger pattern of growing evidence of disrespect for the president and manipulating the information that is given to him similar to the decision with Afghanistan,” the source allegedly said. “The blame for this rests solely on the shoulders of two individuals — General HR McMaster and General Kelly — both of whom as flag officers should know better than to keep the commander-in-chief in the dark on these types of issues,” they added. On Sunday, Breibert also published an article accusing McMaster as being soft on Islamic extremism and terrorism.

Following the collision, Malaysia’s navy chief Ahmad Kamarulzaman Ahmad Badaruddin tweeted that two ships as well as aircraft from its navy and air force have been deployed to help look for the missing US sailors. The Strait of Malacca is a narrow body of water between Malaysia to the northeast and Indonesia to the southwest, with the city-state of Singapore at the tip of the Malay Peninsula.

It is the second collision involving a ship from the 7th Fleet in the Pacific in two months. In June, seven sailors died when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship hit each other in waters off Japan. Four of the injured sailors were evacuated by a Singaporean navy helicopter to a hospital in Singapore for treatment for non-life threatening injuries, and one did not require further medical attention.

https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/08/why-i-changed-my-mind-about-confederate-monuments/537396/

Excerpt:
Why I Changed My Mind About Confederate Monuments
Empty pedestals can offer the same lessons about racism and war that the statues do.

Utilizing Confederate monuments in my classes offered students a window into the history of the war, but more importantly, it introduced them to the difficult distinction between history and memory. The tributes showed how communities like Charlottesville and Richmond chose to remember the conflict long after the guns fell silent, and how they used the memory of Confederate leaders to impart moral lessons on future generations. And my students learned how the monuments helped establish and maintain a system of Jim Crow segregation—by defining and enforcing the city’s racial boundaries through much of the 20th century. Monument sites became classrooms where I could teach about the long and difficult history of racism in America. Taking them down seemed to represent the antithesis of my goals as a teacher.

But the fallout following the horrific 2015 murders of nine churchgoers in Charleston, South Carolina’s Emanuel A.M.E. Church proved to be a critical turning point in my thinking. After photographs of the shooter, Dylann Roof, posing with Confederate battle flags were published, calls rang out to remove both the banners and rebel monuments from public spaces. For me, the lowering of the Confederate battle flag in Columbia and elsewhere needed little justification, as it’d been embraced as a symbol of “massive resistance” during the civil-rights movement. But I still held firm to my view of the monuments.

That summer, I traveled for the first time to Prague, in the former Soviet-bloc country of Czechoslovakia. I noticed almost immediately the concrete foundations and empty pedestals where monuments to communist leaders once stood. Some statues had been relocated to museums, while others were destroyed; skate boarders and sunbathers had since claimed their spot.

The experience forced me to reconsider my position on the markers back home. I imagined stepping back in time to convince the residents of Prague that the monuments helped them face their past, or gave teachers an important tool with which to engage their students. This proved to be a futile exercise. Regardless of their destination, the monuments were exactly where they needed to be as determined by the community members themselves.

After all, the people of Prague were not trying to erase their history or turn away from the lessons it might offer. They had lived this past and it would remain with them. The removal of monuments to Stalin and Lenin lifted the weight of the memory of oppression, allowing the Czech people to begin to imagine a new direction for their nation. They understood “that history can’t be a sword to justify injustice or a shield against progress,” as Barack Obama explained in his eulogy for the Charleston victims.

In the time since that visit, I have listened much more closely to the concerns of those who live in the shadows of Confederate statues, who see their removal as the next step in achieving a more equitable society. Nowhere have these voices been more passionate and forceful than in New Orleans, where workers this spring took down four Confederate and Reconstruction monuments. Local activists Terri Coleman and Malcolm Suber argued convincingly that they don’t need reminders of the history of racial injustice, because it is present all around them. The city’s mayor, Mitch Landrieu, has spoken about the need to acknowledge the damage these figures continue to do.

Please read the rest of the articled linked..

https://www.vox.com/2017/8/19/16174088/trump-boston-protesters-police

As tens of thousands of anti-racism protesters descended on Boston to counter a Free Speech rally that many worried would attract the same white supremacist, alt-right crowd seen in Charlottesville, Virginia, President Donald Trump again chose to respond to “both sides.”

First, he chided the “anti-police agitators” among the counterprotesters, picking up on footage of “fuck the police” chants, and a reports of rock and urine throwing. According to Boston Police, the events Saturday were largely peaceful. Among an estimated crowd of 40,000 protesters there were 27 arrests for disorderly conduct and some for altercations with police.

“99.9 percent of the people here were here for the right reasons and that’s to fight bigotry and hate for the most part here today,” Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said at a press conference Saturday.

The troublemakers, Evans said, weren’t with either side — they were just there to make trouble. Trump quickly changed his tone about the protests, and tweeted only an hour later that such anti-racism protests will help the country heal.
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/899008381226299392

He continued to applaud the many protesters in Boston who came out against “bigotry and hate.”
https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/899008521726861312

It was a sudden change from the president, who has spent the past week equivocating blame around the Charlottesville white supremacist rally, which turned violent last weekend. In that case, groups of white supremacists, nationalists, and neo-Nazis went to Charlottesville to protest the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue in a public park, and were met by thousands of counterprotesters.

It was clear Saturday that the Boston Free Speech rally would be quickly overshadowed by thousands of counter-protesters denouncing bigotry and racism. More anti-racism protesters, led by the local Black Lives Matter chapter, marched through Boston Saturday from the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center to join the counter demonstration at Boston Common.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/poll-most-republicans-back-trump-145304063.html

Republicans have remained supportive of President Donald Trump, their party leader, throughout his many trials and tribulations during his first seven months in office. Be it his attempt to repeal and replace Obamacare, the immigration ban or tough stance toward North Korea, to name just a few. And a new CBS poll released Thursday morning showed a large majority of GOP members even back the president’s response to and handling of the Charlottesville, Virginia, protest, which resulted in the death of one woman and reignited racial tensions throughout the country.

The poll showed 67 percent of Republicans approved of Trump’s response, compared with 82 percent of Democrats disapproving and 55 percent of respondents overall claiming disapproval. Thirty-four percent overall approved, but 53 percent of those who identified as independent disapproved.

Going further, 68 percent of Republicans believed Trump’s blame of “many sides” being responsible for the violence that engulfed the college town over the planned teardown of a statue honoring Confederate General Robert E. Lee. Fifty-five percent overall claimed Trump was inaccurate. And more than half of Republicans polled, 56 percent, thought Trump was having no effect on race relations around the country, while 70 percent of Democrats said Trump’s actions were creating more division. Overall, Americans were somewhat split with 44 percent saying Trump was causing division and 39 percent in the no-effect category.

The protest Saturday brought white supremacists and nationalists, as well as neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members, face-to-face with counterprotesters who also included anti-fascists, or “antifa.” Trump’s first statement following the death of 32-year-old counterprotester Heather Heyer cited “many sides” at fault for the violence. Two days later, amid mounting public pressure to condemn the white supremacists by name, Trump spoke at the White House to specifically blast any form of racism or bigotry and called out the hate groups.

But on Tuesday, Trump returned to his rhetoric of “many sides” during a press conference at Trump Tower that was supposed to focus on plans to revamp the country’s infrastructure. Instead, Trump suggested that the “alt-left” had an equal role in the violence, and also stated that if Lee’s statue could be taken down then former Presidents George Washington’s and Thomas Jefferson’s could as well. Trump brought up the fact that both presidents had been slave owners while accusing the media at the conference of improperly reporting the protest.

“Many of those people were there to protest the taking down of the statue of Robert E. Lee,” Trump said. “So this week, it is Robert E. Lee. I noticed that Stonewall Jackson is coming down. I wonder, is it George Washington next week? And is it Thomas Jefferson the week after? You know, you really do have to ask yourself, Where does it stop?”

The president reaffirmed his stance on the issue Thursday morning in three tweets, again invoking Lee, Jefferson and Washington, and citing the “beauty” of the Confederate statutes being taken down around the country.

https://www.yahoo.com/gma/mother-woman-killed-charlottesville-no-interest-speaking-trump-114005769--abc-news-topstories.html

The mother of Heather Heyer, the woman killed Saturday when a car rammed into a crowd of counterprotesters at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, said she "will not" speak with President Donald Trump in the wake of her daughter's death. “I have not and now I will not,” Susan Bro said in an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts today on “Good Morning America,” adding that she believes the first phone call to her from the White House came during her daughter’s public memorial service on Wednesday.
___

She said her opinion of Trump’s response changed after she had time to watch news coverage of the Charlottesville protests after laying Heyer, 32, to rest on Wednesday. "I hadn’t really watched the news until last night and I’m not talking to the president now, I'm sorry, after what he said about my child," Bro explained. "It’s not that I saw somebody else’s tweets about him, I saw an actual clip of him at a press conference equating the protesters ... with the KKK and the white supremacists." She continued, "You can’t wash this one away by shaking my hand and saying, ‘I’m sorry.’ I’m not forgiving for that."

Bro also sat down for an interview with ABC News on Thursday, during which she said she is hesitant, nearly one week after Heyer’s death, to speak to Trump or any politician. "I understand that President Trump wants to speak with me… and it's not that I'm trying to be calloused, it's that I have no interest in speaking to politicians just to hear them say, 'I'm sorry,'" Bro told ABC News on Thursday. "If I felt like that's all they wanted to say, that would be different, but I feel like I'm wanted to be used for political agendas and I'm resistant to that."
___

"I wasn't there that day, but I will tell you that I'm pretty sure that's the only person that ran people down with a car, so that level of violence didn't take place on both sides, that did not happen," Bro said Thursday of the crash that killed her daughter.

"I've heard it said that the murder of my daughter was part of making America great," Bro added. "The blood on the streets, is that what made America great? Attacking innocent people with a vehicle, is that what made America great?" Bro clarified today that her daughter, a paralegal who lived in Charlottesville, was not part of any organized group protesting in her hometown, saying, "She was part of a group of human beings who cared to protest."

"I'm honestly a little embarrassed to say that part of the reason Heather got so much attention is because she's white, and she stood up for black people," Bro told ABC News on Thursday. "Isn't that a shame? That a white person standing up for a black person caused all this excitement? That should be an everyday thing, that should be a norm." Bro said that she is now dedicating herself to "forward Heather's mission."

"A lot of people are already aware of injustice, it's not that they're not aware, it's that they won't do anything about it," Bro said Thursday. "'I'm afraid, I'm afraid,' that's what I keep hearing, and that's what the murder of my daughter and the injury of several others was intended to do, was to make people afraid."

"But if we live in fear, then they've won," she said, calling on people to "get involved" when they witness injustice. "Heather was not a politician, but she was interested in changing people," Bro said. "My focus is not on politics; my focus is on human beings and on how we as human beings can fix problems."

https://www.yahoo.com/news/heather-heyer-apos-mother-says-163800758.html

The mother of Heather Heyer, the 32-year-old woman who was killed at a white nationalist rally in Virginia, has issued a defiant response to the rally attendees. "They tried to kill my child to shut her up," Susan Bro told the crowd gathered at her daughter's memorial service. "Well guess what? You just magnified her."

Ms Heyer was one of hundreds of people who gathered to protest the white nationalist gathering this weekend. She was killed on Saturday when a car – allegedly driven by a Nazi sympathiser – drove through a crowd of counter-protesters. Dozens of others were injured in the attack. At her funeral, her mother praised her penchant for social justice, and her seemingly innate ability to "call out something that didn't seem right to her".

"I want this to spread, I don't want this to die," Ms Bro said of her daughter's activism. "This is just the beginning of Heather's legacy." Ms Bro spoke with striking poise and passion, addressing the more than 1,000 people who turned out for the funeral. She urged the attendees to be brave in honour of her daughter, and to stand up to injustice where they saw it.

"You need to find it in your heart that small spark of accountability," she told the crowd. "...You poke that finger at yourself like Heather would have done, and you make it happen. You take that extra step. You find a way to make a difference in the world."

Ms Heyer's father, Mark Heyer, also addressed the crowd, telling them of his daughter's passion and strong will. On the day of her death, he said, she was trying to "put down hate.”

We must OVERCOME !!!

Baltimore removed all 4 of its Confederate statues overnight

In a stunningly swift move, Baltimore removed all four of its Confederate statues in the middle of the night Tuesday, only one day after the removal was approved by the city council. From 11:30 pm to 5:30 am, cranes and trucks removed statues of Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson, the Confederate Women of Maryland, the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument, and a statue of Roger B. Taney, the former chief justice who authored the notorious pro-slavery Dred Scott decision, according to the Baltimore Sun. Where the statues will go is currently unknown.

“I did not want to endanger people in my own city,” Mayor Catherine Pugh said. “I had begun discussions with contractors and so forth about how long it would take to remove them. I am a responsible person, so we moved as quickly as we could. “

Baltimore’s removal contrasts the processes seen in New Orleans and continuing in Charlottesville, where months of debates surrounding the fate of statues prompted multiple protests. In the case of Charlottesville, these protests turned violent over the weekend, killing one and injuring at least 19.

Baltimore seemingly wanted to avoid the potential for violence, as there was no advanced notice as to when exactly the city was planning to remove the statues. Anthony McCarthy, a spokesperson for Pugh, told me Monday that Pugh was, “moving quickly,” and planned to set up a task force on Wednesday to begin the removal process. But the entire process of removing the statues was completed before then.

Trump added fuel to the fire on Tuesday afternoon, when he backtracked his statements on the violence in Charlottesville and equated white supremacists to those who fight racism. Across the nation, at least 700 Confederacy linked statues and monuments remain, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

It's amazing how efficient government gets once you introduce Nazis sympathizing into the equation. Thank goodness for liberal politicians..

They were doing more than poking them, dude. They weren't running people over with cars, but they have been doing some pretty aggressive and violent acts as well. You don't have to keep the bar at "don't kill people".

I would equate this to a big-ass school bully constantly yelling and poking, and spitting, and screaming, and intimidating his victim for the entire school year, until the little school kid finally has enough and punches, or spits at him back.

What the little school kid did probably wasn't right, and he should go to detention for it, but I completely empathize why he did it.

I don't consider it "an option" or "a privilege" to tell people I'm Romanian any more than I'd consider it "an option" or "a privilege" for someone from Somalia to tell people that they're actually Somalian.

Has any parent of a girlfriend expressed misgivings that she was dating a 'dirty Romanian'? Just about every black man has had to deal with, or known someone who's had to deal with something like that over their lifetime.

Hilary Duff Tells Body-Shaming Critics to ‘Kiss My A**’ in Swimsuit Photo

Hilary Duff is firing back at body-shaming critics in a post, along with a photo of a body “flaw” she’s proud to rock. On Friday, Duff posted an Instagram photo of herself wearing a $200 Norma Kamali black-and-white gingham one-piece swimsuit and a straw hat. In the photo, Duff has her back to the camera — revealing some cellulite, something most women can relate to — as she holds 5-year-old son Luca while standing at the ocean in Hawaii.

“I am posting this on behalf of young girls, women, and mothers of all ages,” she wrote to her 8 million followers. “Since websites and magazines love to share ‘celeb flaws’ — well I have them! My body has given me the greatest gift of my life: Luca, 5 years ago. I’m turning 30 in September and my body is healthy and gets me where I need to go.”

She added, “Ladies, let’s be proud of what we’ve got and stop wasting precious time in the day wishing we were different, better, and unflawed. You guys (you know who you are!) already know how to ruin a good time, and now you are body shamers as well.” Duff hashtagged the post #kissmyass.

Anyone who follows Duff with any regularity knows that she has no issue calling B.S. on the demands of Hollywood and motherhood.

Most recently, Duff posed for swimsuit and lingerie line Aerie (which has run campaigns without airbrushing its models) and shared an empowering message with her fans on Instagram: “I didn’t always love my legs, but as I’ve grown, I’ve learned to love and celebrate myself, just as I am. I began to realize that my legs are STRONG and they carry me every. single. day. Our bodies are amazing and something to be grateful for. I’m ME and that’s really enough!”
