TopicSome QAnon members are now seeking therapy after reality check

https://apnews.com/article/qanon-conspiracy-theory-recovery-4ea47c2966a41b30ae678e5f471f6070

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) Ceally Smith spent a year down the rabbit hole of QAnon, devoting more and more time to researching and discussing the conspiracy theory online. Eventually it consumed her, and she wanted out.

She broke up with the boyfriend who recruited her into the movement, took six months off social media, and turned to therapy and yoga.

I was like: I cant live this way. Im a single mom, working, going to school and doing the best for my children, said Smith, 32, of Kansas City, Missouri. I personally didnt have the bandwidth to do this and show up for my children. Even if it was all true, I just couldnt do it anymore.

More than a week after Donald Trump departed the White House, shattering their hopes that he would expose the worldwide cabal, some QAnon adherents have concocted ever more elaborate stories to keep their faith alive. But others like Smith are turning to therapy and online support groups to talk about the damage done when beliefs collide with reality.

The QAnon conspiracy theory emerged on fringe internet message boards in 2017. At root, the movement claims Trump is waging a secret battle against the deep state and a sect of powerful devil-worshipping pedophiles who dominate Hollywood, big business, the media and government.

It is named after Q, an anonymous poster who believers claim has top-secret government clearance and whose posts are taken as predictions about the plan and the coming storm and great awakening in which evil will be defeated.

Its not clear exactly how many people believe some or all of the narrative, but backers of the movement were vocal in their support for Trump and helped fuel the insurrectionists who overran the U.S. Capitol this month. QAnon is also growing in popularity overseas.

Former believers interviewed by The Associated Press liken the process of leaving QAnon to kicking a drug addiction. QAnon, they say, offers simple explanations for a complicated world and creates an online community that provides escape and even friendship.

Smiths then-boyfriend introduced her to QAnon. It was all he could talk about, she said. At first she was skeptical, but she became convinced after the death of financier Jeffrey Epstein while in federal custody facing pedophilia charges. Officials debunked theories that he was murdered, but to Smith and other QAnon supporters, his suicide while facing child sex charges was too much to accept.

Soon, Smith was spending more time on fringe websites and on social media, reading and posting about the conspiracy theory. She said she fell for QAnon content that presented no evidence, no counter-arguments, and yet was all too convincing.

We as a society need to start teaching our kids to ask: Where is this information coming from? Can I trust it? she said. Anyone can cut and paste anything.

After a year, Smith wanted out, suffocated by dark prophesies that were taking up more and more of her time, leaving her terrified.
Her then-boyfriend saw her decision to move on from QAnon as a betrayal. She said she no longer believes in the theory, and wanted to share her story in the hopes it would help others.

I was one of those people too, she said of QAnon and its grip. I came out on the other end because I wanted to feel better.

Another ex-believer, Jitarth Jadeja, now moderates a Reddit forum called QAnon Casualties to help others like him, as well as the relatives of people still consumed by the theory. Membership has doubled in recent weeks to more than 119,000 members. Three new moderators had to be added just to keep up.

They are our friends and family, said Jadeja, of Sydney, Australia. Its not about who is right or who is wrong. Im here to preach empathy, for the normal people, the good people who got brainwashed by this death cult.

His advice to those fleeing QAnon? Get off social media, take deep breaths, and pour that energy and internet time into local volunteering.

Michael Frink is a Mississippi computer engineer who helps administer a QAnon recovery channel on the social media platform Telegram. He said that while mocking the group has never been more popular online, it will only further alienate people.

Frink said he never believed in the QAnon theory but sympathizes with those who did.

I think after the inauguration a lot of them realized theyve been taken for a ride, he said. These are human beings. If you have a loved one who is in it, make sure they know they are loved.

I haven't tried smell training like your doctor said, but I tried smelling stuff everyday. I noticed it started to come back when I smelled some anise very strongly--and I hate anise.

Do smell training. Try Listerine Cool Mint. My nose recognized that smell right away even when I lost everything. My doctor said you're just supposed to breathe it in and not try hard to smell it. Just let it sit maybe an inch from your nose and just breathe like normal.

It was hard for me because my smell and taste would go back and forth. I had good days and bad days. I would smell almost everything and then the next day it felt like I lost everything. Then it would come back again.

Besides smell training, I would also light a scented candle to relax while watching a movie to relax. I ignored the candle and just paid attention to the movie and then I noticed my nose was picking up the candle's scent. I think that helped train my nose too.

Are you doing smell training? That's what I kept doing.

Basically, what a doctor told me is to smell at least 5 to 8 things every morning that I could smell for about 20 to 30 seconds. Then again around late afternoon/early evening then again before bed. He also said to keep eating things like normal and it worked.

did you ever get memory loss or brain fog?
No, just fever, headache, and chills for two days.

On the third day I noticed I would get easily winded. Like I would be able to run a mile easily when I was healthy, but with the virus I felt like I couldn't even walk a mile without coughing. It was sort of like being a smoker or something.

I didn't stress myself out.

I just slept and watched Netflix all day. My stamina came back about two weeks later, but the smell and taste loss was the most stubborn symptom that lasted a while.

How did you know you had it on the 11th? Did you have other symptoms besides the loss of smell and taste?
Yeah, everyone in my house got it first and tested positive. I wore double masks, gloves, and washed my hands 1,000 times and stayed in my room, and forced the ones who were sick to stay in their rooms, but I still got infected.

I got fever, chills, body and headaches. The fever never went above 100 degrees.

It was really strange because I never would have known that I had fever if I didn't have an infrared thermometer.

The strange thing is when I get the flu and I get fever, I know I have fever because my body feels off. When I got the coronavirus at first I just had a headache. Since I knew headache was a symptom and since other people in my home were sick, I decided to check myself and sure enough I was 100 degrees. After that came the body aches and chills.

Thank GOD it's back!

I never thought I would miss something like that, but boy I'll never take smell taste for granted again!

Basically, I got COVID on Nov. 11 then lost my smell and taste on the 13th. Then the only thing I could smell was Listerine and that's it.

I was like that for about 3 days before finally another smell came back. I could smell Tea Tree shampoo. For about a week I could only smell those two things. Then I could smell and taste chocolate. Then it moved up to lemons and so on until finally yesterday it came back about 75% yesterday then today it moved up to 90%.

After fighting fever, body aches, and sore throat... I'm now in the lost my taste phase.

I can still smell.

If you want to know how it feels to lose your taste, I'm not sure how to explain it. I mean you can feel the texture and all but there's just something off. It's like when you use mouth wash and immediately eat something like chocolate for instance and it tastes weird.

Eating bread really sucks and is the grossest thing to eat so far.

He's declared victory.

He's up in some state and wants to stop counting votes because he's already up.

He's shifted the blame to Democrats and says they're trying to make Democrats win by counting more votes.

He's basically up 21 to 14 in the 4th quarter with 4 minutes remaining and is like, "Okay, let's end the game here. I'm leading. There's no way the other team can catch up."

And he's able to get half of Americans to believe him.

Trump is a danger to American democracy and allowing him to undermine the election will only open the door for someone worse than him to run for president and that person doesn't have to be Republican. That worse person could be a Democrat or Independent. Allowing him to do whatever he wants without putting a leash on him will allow someone in the future to take office for good and then hello Dictator.
