I only see one rerelease in the form of New Super Mario Brothers U Deluxe and even then it has some new content

Tales of Vesperia Definitive Edition is an HD remaster with enough new content to make the original look like a Beta release

Top 10 Favorite Games of 2018

1. Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age

I'll just ask you to watch Tim Rogers review the game. He can explain why DQXI is so good far better than I can. I'll just add before release I also imported the Japanese 3DS version and played that a little bit before getting the english PS4 version. I'll probably play the Switch version whenever that ends up coming out for the added content!

After Dragon Quest VIII (which was the sole reason I bought a PS2 at the time) I was so excited for another DQ game that looked and played like that, but after that we got DQ9 on DS....and then DQ10 was an MMO and we never got it :(

Then DQ11 was announced and that it was going to be a massive single player jrpg like 8 was and for 3 years I basically campaigned for everyone to buy all the DQ spinoffs that were getting released here to ensure we wouldn't get another DQ10 situation and somehow miss out on the game.

The first 3rd of the game is like a greatest hits of Dragon Quest tropes, the 2nd 3rd of the game is like a greatest hits of Final Fantasy plot twists and then the final 3rd aka the post game it's suddenly Chrono Trigger. Honestly near the end of the main story (the 2nd 3rd) I wasn't sure if this game was going to be my #1 that first ending was a bit underwhelming, but I loved the postgame so much so much crazy shit happens and then the ending was both shocking and exactly what I was hoping for I just loved it so much.

As a result I finally found the RPG that I enjoyed more than Final Fantasy VI as my favorite JRPG. Earthbound, Mother 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles all came close, but they didn't quite get there. DQXI finally got there for me.

Also if you're one of those PC guys you can mod in the orchestrated music, but I've never been bothered by MIDI and I enjoyed the music just fine.

2. Mega Man 11

Hello it's me

The Mega Man fan. I play the Mega Man! Jump! Shoot! Slide!

BUT NOW!

POWER GEAR!

SPEED GEAR!

The new gear system in Mega Man 11 is the most significant evolution to the series since introducing the Charge shot in Mega Man 4. It fundamentally changes how these games are played for the better. The lot of the level design was built around using the gears and it was a fresh change that I really enjoyed. This is basically exactly what i needed after years of Mighty No 9s and....well just no Mega Man.

When the game came out I basically stopped playing everything I was currently on and played through this game 4 or 5 times in a row over the course of a weekend working on the various challenges and trying all 4 difficulties to see the differences between them and doing a no damage run and a speed run, etc. I ended up being the 5th person to platinum the game according to TrueTrophies.

I remember good B8 friend Nanis was also playing it around the same time so I was comparing notes with him too and helping him get through his playthroughs with HOT TIPZ.

Capcom made a good Mega Man game (without Keiji Inafune!) and I hope we don't have to wait 8 years again before we get a Mega Man12.

3. Monster Hunter: World

The other game I spent about 250 hours playing! This is only the 2nd Monster Hunter I played through completely. I did it first on Tri on the Wii, but then could never get into any of the handheld iterations. The series returning to console though was able to rope me back in and I'm glad I did.

Monster Hunter is almost like a fighting game where each weapon type is almost its own game each as their own complete playstyle and moveset and that's how people can play these games for 1000s of hours no problem. Me personally I picked the Great Sword back in Tri and I've never looked back. I love to tank the big monster and get that one big on it that'll break off a piece or kill it, etc.

Surprisingly I ended up playing most of this game solo. All my friends I play games with said they were going to wait for the PC version while I got the PS4 version....then they never ended up getting the PC version anyway. One of the new quality of life improvements lets you summon anyone who's looking to help if you ever get in trouble so I utilized that to summon japanese ninjas to help out if I ever needed it and I had a grand old time.

As I progressed I eventually became the one helping other people and I just loved it. Hunting monsters is always fun, learning their patterns and figuring out the fastest and most efficient way to do it. By the end I was playing Fashion Hunter as well and ended up looking like Big Boss with a Mega Man cat by my side.

In the last few years I've had problems getting into games when first starting them, but I've found that pushing through for the first hour or two fixes all of that. There's something about looking at a game that you know you'll be playing for dozens of hours and feeling as if though it is a daunting task, but once you get into the gameplay loop all sense of time goes away.

I think I played Spider-Man and Red Dead 2's first few hours in thirty minute sessions over the course of a week where I struggled to dig into them, and by the end of my time with the games I was hitting six to eight hours a day for multiple days in a row.

on my days off I definitely spend 12 hours at a time playing red dead and not noticing it go by at all DAYS JUST ENDED

Top 10 Favorite Games of 2018

4. Red Dead Redemption 2

RDR2 is difficult to rate. Red Dead Redemption 1 was my favorite game of all of last generation and John Marston one of my favorite protagonists. It feels almost impossible to follow up and yet Rockstar almost did it!

There's no timer in the game, but I probably spent over 250 hours playing RDR2 getting 100% and then another 50 playing Red Dead Online. Rockstar created one of the biggest and most realistic games ever made and that comes with both the good and the bad. There's so many things to do and see that I never really felt bored in all my time spent with it, but just like real life you can't really skip most of it. You have to see all the animations for everything you do in their entirety. Rockstar made sure you saw their 8 years of hard work even if it sometimes sacrificed the gameplay. Your character also moves slowly and can and will bump into all the geometry and you're always going to want to keep your horse near you at all times.

The story is the real gem here. It's easily the best story in any video game ever and the character arc of Arthur Morgan made me very attached to him, even at times preferring him over RDR1's version of Marston. They make that choice a bit easier just because Marston in this game is a much younger and foolish version of himself so it's easy to love Arthur instead. Every character in the gang while filled with western cliches feel like formed characters that you want to talk to and hear their opinions after every minor thing that happens in the story. I won't really get into spoilers you should really just experience this story for yourself but the story of the Dutch van der Linde game is one worth seeing. I love it even more in the epilogue as it begins to tie itself into RDR1 and begins to set that up.

The thing that stopped me from putting this higher is Red Dead Online. Sure it's still in beta and I'm sure just like GTA Online it'll get much better over time, but I played it now in the beta when there's almost nothing to do there's only like 8 story missions and then you're left to just do an endless string of repeatable stranger missions and deathmatches and horse racing. I personally enjoyed the horse racing the most!

5. God of War

Ive never really considered the God of War franchise to be anything but middle tier in the character action genre below the likes of Bayonetta, Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. The controls never felt great but I enjoyed Kratos being a loud and angry murderer of the greek pantheon. When I saw the new one was going to a new take on the series with a much older Kratos and his son and taking place in Norse mythology instead of Greek I was intrigued. It was so different that into the leadup to the release I was unsure how the game would even play and if it was actually a reboot and not the same Kratos from those old games.

What we got ended up getting was a game that mostly shed everything about those old games in favor of what to me was essentially a 3D metroid style game with Dark Souls combat. And while they tried to hide a bit in the beginning, this is definitely the same Kratos in all his glory, but now he has a boy and he cant win every fight with his fists. He sometimes needs to use WORDS and FEELINGS and PARENTING....things I have no experience with! Still it made Kratos become an actual super compelling character and I was rooting for him the whole way to overcome everything that was thrown his way. Atreus (Boy) is also a good new character save for the middle arc where hes a 10 year old with god powers and abuses it like someone in his position would. And of course they throw all the big plot twists in at the end so that youre wanting the sequel sooner rather than later

The game uses a cinematic style where the camera never cuts away so you always feel like youre in the action. I think the video I provided highlights that with your first fight with Baldur early on in the game. Before that the game is very slow and plodding just going down linear areas with Boy teaching him how to be a man, then you get back home and this happens. Feels like a straight up DBZ fight once it gets going. The rest of the game goes from there opening up into an ocarina of time style hub area exploring every corner and finding upgrades that will let you progress through other areas with lots of backtracking and whatnot.

Definitely the best God of War game and I wouldnt mind a few more in this style.
