I had a vegan friend who ate out a lot. I think he mostly went to mexican places to have like bean, tortilla, etc. based dishes

does this seem valid? I don't know the rules of being a vegan so I don't know if he was doing it correctly

Yeah, as a general rule it's much easier to find vegan fair at "ethnic" places than those that focus on American cuisine. When I was still in Vancouver eating out and being vegan was easy. Tons of Indian/Chinese/Japanese/Mexican etc. options or literally pizza and burgers just made with vegan ingredients. In a smaller town... no chance. But at the same time I decided to try it for health reasons (I've always been skinny, but I figured if I could never gain weight, might as well eat right and see how that feels) so it didn't matter so much to me that the food didn't have meat/dairy as much as I cared about whether or not it was a decent meal.

Even though I eat anything now, I'll often go for a vegan dish if the menu has any. I find I just feel better afterwards.

Ahh, that makes a lot of sense. The two and a half years I was eating vegan is probably the closest I've come to that. It was just a pain to go out to eat when all I could get was an overpriced salad that wasn't all that great, or fries.

Now I feel like I'm eating out all the time. My girlfriend is much more social than me so we're always going out to bars/restaurants to hang out with friends. This topic really put into perspective how little fast food I eat now. I've always LOVED fast food and when I really think about it, now I'm only eating at sit-down restaurants and it's pretty rare that I have fast food.

Never? Or you just went a few years without making a habit of eating out? I honestly figured part of being an adult was going to meet people for dinner and/or drinks. Hard to imagine never eating out unless I didn't ever hang out with others.

Final Fantasy VIII probably isn't the best game, but I definitely found it the most interesting from a plot, character and mechanics point of view. I honestly don't think you're going to be blown away by any of them for the first time in 2017... but outside of all the hype and disappointment people felt about VIII when it was released I think you'll be able to appreciate the ways it deviated from the standard RPG formula.

Also assuming that you're playing all of these on PC. I wouldn't even bother with the PSX version of IX. The speed is just... I don't even know how it was released.

This is the first year I've done my own, and it was much easier than I thought it would be. My dad usually has his accountant do the entire family's taxes. I assume his are much more complicated since he makes a lot of money, owns property in, and earns income from other countries, etc. But yeah, judging by how simple my own were, I'm sure a lot of people are just intimidated by the concept, rather than having tried and actually been too dumb to complete it.

Phoenix fan, what are your thoughts on the first 150 pages or so? I find emo Harry to be unbearable.

I never once thought of him like that. Harry has serious problems to do deal with. I swear to god, comparing those problems to the dating nonsense of Goblet makes him look like he's matured 15 years.

I find that people use emo when issues make a character unlikeable, regardless of the "validity" of their emotions. The thing I remember about Harry in Order wasn't that he was whiny, it's that he became kind of mean and it was kind of uncomfortable... But that only made it better. I love when an author has the confidence to do that with such a beloved character to show that although they're the good guy, they're not always going to do the right thing.

It's hard for me to vote in this poll since I've seen each of the movies at least 3 times since reading ANY of the books again, but I think reading OotP was the most exciting for me, while Goblet had the most pre-release hype. Deathly Hallows is hard to rank because conclusions always get an extra bump in my mind for tying everything together.

How are the MVP votes done in the NBA? Is it by number of first place votes, or a weighted top-5 system? I feel like if it's the latter, Westbrook has no chance, but if it's the first... he has it in the bag. This is based on nothing, but I feel like the some people who think the triple-double is an arbitrary stat could let Westbrook drop to 3rd in their ballots behind both Harden and Kawhi, but they're not going to be as numerous as the people who think Westbrook was both the best and most exciting player to watch this season. But on the other side, no Westbrook voter is going to let Harden slip anywhere below number 2.

The leveling experience is fantastic right now actually. It is unfortunate that the game is designed in a way that you won't actually see most of it outside of the current expansion areas.

Yeah that's kind of how I felt. Even though it's great to move through zones so quickly and have an easy path to reach my friends who are 110 and raiding, I know I'm missing out on a lot of cool content, or just speeding through it because you gain experience so quickly. Luckily I already played TBC, but I didn't really quest at all in the Outlands, random dungeons were just too good exp with the insta queue. I barely saw any of Northrend for similar reasons. I stayed a while in Hyjal for the Cata content but even then it was only Hyjal and Deepholm before I hit 85 and was done with that as well. I'm sure it will be the same with the WoD content I'm currently doing, but it's fun nonetheless. I'll probably go back and just solo a bunch of instances later to really get a feel for all the lore. Things move so quickly in the random groups that I couldn't really soak in the encounters.

Nevertheless, I'm surprised how easy it was to admit that the game is simply better now. Or maybe I'm just older and I've turned into a filthy casual. Back as a teenager me and my friends really embraced the grind and hated all the changes made to make the game more appealing for new players, but I can't really argue with their vision now, the normalization has seemed to actually make the game more skill-based, because everyone has gear and it's only ability that will separate you from the pack... I assume. I haven't done any PvP yet, but I feel like I'm going to be severely outmatched when I jump back in, despite being Gladiator level when I initally quit.

Crazy, I just got back into the game last Sunday after taking 8 years off.

It's pretty crazy how different it is compared to when I played in vanilla and BC, but I'm enjoying it a lot. Decided to level a new character so I wasn't just bombarded with all the changes at once and I'm currently at level 92, can't wait to get to the legion stuff and grab my artifact weapon. The thing about how streamlined everything is now, is that I'm already thinking of alts and rerolling and I haven't even maxed out yet. The fact that every class and spec is viable really makes me want to try the playstyles I never could in the early game.

Sucks to hear the reason why you're quitting, but I hope everything works out for you.

I'm usually the same way, but I had to go with Normal on this game.

Started on casual because while I'm not good at shooters, I like the abilities in these games and tend to play as a melee class anyways. I had to bump it up to normal a few hours in because I wasn't getting any enjoyment out of the RPG aspect. I had all these cool abilities, but everything just died after I charged in and started roasting them with fire. I wasn't even able to use my melee weapons or stealth, or do anything cool that I was spending all these skill points on. Normal gave the enemies enough health to let me feel like a badass while charging in, lighting them on fire and then finishing off any stragglers with melee.

This is hot on the heels of Amy Schumer's latest special getting 1-starred to high hell over the last couple weeks although it may not be necessarily related.

How could this possibly be related?

How does this change anything? What's to stop her from getting thumbs downed to all hell?

It's related because this decision was made in part due to the downvoting that occurred with her special.

It was reported last year that Netflix was looking to move away from its old way of rating shows and movies, when the company began beta testing the “thumbs.” It rolled out the interface change to hundreds of thousands of new Netflix users around the world, while other members saw the old interface with stars. After sitting back for a few months, Yellin said, the company observed that over 200 percent more ratings were logged, cementing the decision to change the system.

It is a good thing cuz the star rating system has literally no sense to it. Classics that have 3 stars and b movie horror movies that have 5. I largely just ignore them completely.

Too many people just give a 5 if they like it. 1 if they dont like it. No point to not just have a thumbs up and down with numbers of each.

This is only true if you rate and watch nothing, that's the only way you'd see what the majority of people rated something. Otherwise it's based on your likes and history... which would mean you tend to watch a lot of B movies over classics or rate them highly compared to classics.

Which would make some sense, really. A lot of people aren't using Netflix to watch old movies they already know are good, they just want to put something dumb on in the background while they do other things. Though with that said, the classics are all rated quite high for me and I never watch them either.
