Massive Attack- Blue Lines (1991)

Recommend a listen? Yes

Massive Attack is a trip hop band that has elluded me for decades at this point. I've seen their name and album covers all over the place, but for whatever reason I don't think I've even listened to a single song by them. I think I may have been confusing them for another band. What a shame.

It took me a second to get into this album, but by the time "Blue Lines" comes on, I'm fully in. They do a great cover of "Be Thankful for what You've Got" that was originally recorded by William DeVaughn. (I've always loved the original) I'll leave a link for that down below for those that haven't heard it before. "Lately" was probably the only real dud for me on the record. Otherwise there's a lot to enjoy here.

I'll definitely need to be in the right mood for this record, but I will definitely return to it. I wish I had more to say about this record, but I'm having one of those I don't know what to write about on this review kind of days. Another great find from this journey. Highly recommended.

I know this is about specific actual studio albums but man "The Immaculate Collection" which is just a greatest hits from the debut in 1983 up to 1990 is outstanding and one I have put on many times over the years. Not a genre I'm really into but yeah I guess because of my age it was just hard not to be exposed to Madonna so much in the 80's through the culture of MTV and the decade in general.

I'm not sure what's on any of her other greatest hits albums, but yeah if anyone decides to go the greatest hits route, get this one. It's Madonna in her peak years.

Madonna- Like a Prayer (1989)

Now anyone who's followed this thread already knows how I feel about Madonna. Long story short, I'm generally not a fan. I certainly didn't like or approve of her "Music" and "Ray of Light" albums being included in this book. How either of those records were chosen over her "Like a Virgin" record is beyond me. Neither of those records are better in quality or are as culturally significant as her "Like a Virgin" record.

As much as it pains me to say anything positive about Madonna, this album 1000% deserves it's spot in the 1001. I have softened up on Madonna in this era. I actually enjoy a good bit of it now. When I was a kid, I couldn't stand her. I've heard many of the songs off this album before, but I have never sat and listened to this album in it's entirety. While I still have no use for Madonna post 1992, I will admit that there's a good amount of quality music from her early years. This record actually has a lot offer in quality pop music. I'd actually consider buying this album. Give this one a shot. Recommended.

David Bowie- Low (1977)
UK
Runtime: 38:50

Recommend a listen? YES

Sheesh...what do I even say about this legendary David Bowie album? Out of his 26 studio albums this record easily finds its way into my top 5. Side one is full of art rock/experimental pop songs. Side two is largely instrumentals that are more on the ambient side of things. This record is certainly a tale of two sides. I honestly can't think of another record where the sides are so completely polar opposites. Yet...it somehow works. It was no shock to me when I first heard that RCA originally didn't want to release the album. They thought that it was going to bomb. It didn't, but it also didn't receive the adulations it deserved either. Those would come years later when critics and fans alike both decided to agree on the quality of this fine album.

Everyone will find something to like on side one. I mean I don't see how anyone could dislike a track like "Sound and Vision." Side two, might be a little more challenging for your average listener, but I know you fine people here are musically savvy enough to appeciate the quality of the arrangements on these tracks. I can't recommend this album highly enough. One of my absolute favorite Bowie albums.

Buck Owens and His Buckaroos- I've Got a Tiger by the Tail (1965)
USA
Runtime: 28:19
1st time listen
Recommend a listen? Sure

Buck Owens is a classic country artist. I had heard a selection of his music prior to this, but this was my first time listening to an entire album of his. Like most people my first exposure to Buck Owens was the title track here. "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail" is a fun little song, but I suppose the novelty of the song stopped me from digging deeper.

I have heard of few of these songs covered by other artists. I heard "The Streets of Laredo" done by Marty Robbins first. I personally like Robbins version more. Owens covers Chuck Berry's "Memphis," but obviously Berry's version is better, but it is a solid cover. I also heard "Cryin' Time" done by Ray Charles first as well. Written by Buck Owens, It's a well constructed song and I recommend listening to both versions.

If you like classic country, check this record out. If you're generally not a country fan, I'm not sure that there's anything here that'll change your mind about the genre. Personally I'm happy I listened to it, because songs like "The Band Keeps Playin' On" and "If You Fall Out of Love with Me" are killer classic country tunes. Recommended only to fans of country music.

Recommend a listen? No

I guess you'd say Happy Mondays is an indie dance band. This to me is inoffensive music. I'm not going to be mad if someone put this on, as it likely will just become white noise to me. It just doesn't make me feel anything one way or another. These are the worst albums to albums review, because I really don't have anything positive or negative to say about it. I honestly can't think of a single reason why this album was included. I think about how many other deserving albums were snubbed for this milk toast record and I just shake my head in disappointment. None of these highlights are actually highlights for me, but they're probably the best representation of the album and the band. Besides the cornball lyrics and vocals, I didn't mind the music to "Bob's Yer Uncle." Then "God's Cop" and "Step On" weren't terrible. Not recommended.

Recommend a listen? Yes

Madness are a bit new wave, a bit ska, and a bit pop. This album contains their big hit "Our House." It's certainly one of their more straightforward songs and it's really not a good example of who this band really is. That said "Our House" is a really catchy song and it's no wonder that it was a huge hit. Their sound is really hard to explain, but I've always thought that they sound like the songs of a crazy person running a carnival.

This record is all over the place in a good way. I'm really not sure why I haven't picked up anything from them before. I've always liked them. I'll have to remedy that. I didn't know that they're still releasing material. I'm really only familar with their material through the 80s, so if anyone has any thoughts on their post 80s material I'm all ears.

These guys certainly aren't for everyone, but for those looking for something a little more unconventional, give these weirdos and this album a shot. Recommended.

I don't hate Gremlins 2, but I don't exactly love it either. I've said here before...it's a fine movie, but I wish it didn't exist. The first movie is better by a mile.

That was cool...albeit a bit easy. I beat the 8 levels on my first try. I died twice, because it's harder than hell to accurately control that little yellow man on my phone. Still as a huge fan of Pac-Man that was a lot of fun.

Album #207
Carole King- Tapestry (1971)
USA
Runtime: 44:09
Heard it before/own it
Recommend a listen? YES

Carole King is amongst song writing royalty. She's written so many songs for other artists in the 60s before she became a solo artist. Just do a quick Google search and you'll sure to be surprised by a few songs that she wrote or co-wrote.

This album is pop music perfection. It's easily King's best album and am essential pick up for your collection. "Smackwater Jack" and "So Far Away" are probably my personal favorites currently...but nearly every song on this album is a contender. Not much else to say about this album other than highly recommended.

Highlights:
I Feel the Earth Move
So Far Away
It's Too Late
Home Again
Way Over Yonder
You've Got a Friend
Where You Lead
Will You Love Me Tomorrow?
Smackwater Jack
Tapestry
(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman

It will come around.

I bought tickets to see My Bloody Valentine in Dublin (making a weekend of it) ages ago. Only a month to wait now.

Yeah it'll be here before I know it. I'm probably going to try to stay a couple nights if I can. (I have to travel to the show.) It's in Boston and I hate driving there, so I'm not going to want to drive in that mess after the show. There's plenty of stuff to do in the area where I normally stay, so we'll be able to entertain ourselves. Can't wait.

Well I just spent a lot of money on some Iron Maiden tickets for next year. Lol it's almost a year away. Megadeth is opening for them. This will be the second time seeing Maiden and my third time seeing Megadeth. It's likely going to be the last time I get to see either band, so yeah it's worth it to me.

The Monkey was okay. For me a lot of the humor fell flat and it's premise wasn't meaty enough for a feature length film. It would've been awesome in an anthology type of film. It's still worth at least a watch.
