foolmo I don't think that works as a blanket statement like that

It does. Your single data point doesn't discredit the general advice.

I never suggested that your logic fails strictly because of what happened to me. It's simply one instance of the counter example

Now if you look at all the instances in human history when someone told someone else they love them prior to dating...yes, surely by percentage, most of those won't end in a happy relationship (or any relationship)

But you can't just blanket say straight up "doing X is always bad and wrong" when there are observable, measurable circumstances in which you can realize that doing X is clearly not a bad idea

It's just that most often whenever someone does it, they do so without good reason. Sometimes people have good reason

Walk across a bar and say "I love you please date me?" Yeah that works 0%.

Blanket statements don't have to apply to 100% of cases. If you told her you loved her before you started dating, you are an outlier. You better hope she doesn't break up with you because those tactics won't work a second time.

Do you see the irony of your statement? How can you say "blanket isn't 100%" then immediately turn around and say "what you did will never work again." Lol.

See like, this is why I say context matters.

It's not as if "tell her you love her out of nowhere" is some tactic I keep up my sleeve and haphazardly apply it on a whim. It's like you think if I run into a woman at a bar a few times I'll just propose to her the fourth time we meet.

If you love someone, and you are sure you truly love them, it's probably not a bad idea to tell them...especially if you've been weighing the pros and cons for like a year.

So it's possible people telling you back off had the right of it at that time since timing is pretty important for these kinda things.

As for this, nothing the board knew changed between then and when it all came out.

I mean in the end we're happily dating no matter how you slice it. It just amuses me that people would say things like it was "luck" or "not smart" or "definitely not a good way to go about it" when context clearly trumps all that and it worked out. /shrug

The emotional conflict happened way after I made the topic. Several months at least. She took some time to sort things out. It was a couple months between me telling her everything and us actually dating. When I first told her, it was like a "I love you." "Oh. Thank you." kinda thing.

Abridged version:

-her relationship was extremely unhealthy for many, many reasons

-we'd worked together very closely for over two years so there was a lot of shared experiences. Also her ex worked nights so she saw me like 6x as much over those two years

-I made a point to not overtly do or say anything to even remotely indicate that I had any romantic interest, for as long as possible. For several obvious reasons. Then eventually something happened where she and I actually had an emotional conflict (details are irrelevant) and when we talked through that, it just made sense to tell her everything.

The period of time after I told her and before she ended things with her ex (and a while after) was kind of awful and he did not handle it well. It kind of highlighted just how unhealthy the relationship had been.

Spoilers this post is more about me, but i've patiently waited for a time to mention this without having to go out of my way and this seems as good a chance as I'll get

One time I made a topic about workplace romances because I had a crush on a girl I worked with and was curious to hear people's experiences, good or bad, to better gauge my own situation

and as it went on and I described in more detail, people called me insane and etc. for considering making a move, mainly because she was in a 7 year relationship at the time

foolmo said, and I quote, "You will never get the girl. It is a foregone conclusion."

like foolmo knows anything lmao

it was that week I closed the account turbopuns because after seeing how that topic played out, it was abundantly clear that I was just spinning my wheels here with no self growth or productivity going on. now obviously I came back eventually, but it was a very long and healthy break.

anyway we'll be celebrating 1 year in April

In conclusion foolmo is perfectly tolerable and occasionally even useful in specific circumstances. I'm sure he'd be fun to hang out with irl

Please pitch this franchise to a huge Nintendo fan who has never played a single entry in the series. I just watched a playthrough of super castlevania iv and literally no part of it looked fun or compelling. But I like platformers (which is what I call what I just saw) and I always hear this term "metroidvania" which I associate with the concept of exploring an open-ish world (2d or 3d) and backtracking once you have certain skills/items. But I witnessed none of that. Was it always a staple of castlevania, or did it come to that later in the series and the early entries were straight up platforming? Where in the series should a Nintendo vet start? Gimme the skinny on the franchise.

If you think you'd like to travel and you also like to drive, central Kentucky is within a day's drive of most of the eastern half of the US. You can cover most anywhere you'd want to go in about a 16 state area or something.

Chicago, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, D.C., Baltimore, Richmond, Virginia Beach, Asheville, Raleigh, Charleston, Savannah, Atlanta, Nashville, St. Louis, etc. are all <= 10 hours. Most are < 8.

I think I read a quip somewhere that the radius includes like 2/3 of the U.S. population, which is attractive for certain business.

Just think of all the road trips!

Also, four seasons per year with practically no extremes or natural disasters, and uh, very unlikely to get blown up should things go bad I suppose?

We also have the highest % of total area covered by moving water of the 48 contiguous states (Alaska is #1). We're totally set for the impending water crisis.

Alright I think that's probably all I got.
