Pyre (PS4)

Probably a top 5 game for me.

Love love love love love it.

I'll be playing it again for the various conversations and/or story points.

What's the most underrated/underplayed card in standard right now?

Just had a game where I clearly lost due to opponent drawing their DK when I didn't, which got me thinking about the recent talk in this thread about how the DK cards were a bad idea from a design perspective.

Here's what I'm thinking at the moment. The way the hero cards let you totally transform your strategy once they hit the board is awesome. They open up entirely new avenues for deck building. Buuut...draw RNG is a pain. It's no fun when your opponent plays FL Jaina on 9 and you fight tooth and nail to survive another 10 turns, miraculously clinging to life, only to never draw the card in your deck that gives you infinite value.

So...what if they explored some with just making different heroes? Not hero cards, but heroes. Within the existing classes.

Like for a random off the cuff example, you play as a Hunter, meaning you have access to hunter spells, but it's a different character, with different characteristics. Like maybe starting HP, starting Hero Power (maybe even implement passive hero powers like we've seen in solo adventures?), or other perks which don't already exist as a concept in the game.

I know obviously there's a hurdle to overcome with balance. But, that aside...I guess what I'm getting at is the hero card idea is so cool and fun but it's biggest downfall is the fact it's entirely unreliable. Why not just make it a permanent thing like Baku and Genn?

I guess/hope that's what they are working toward with those cards?

What do you think?

I just had someone add me after a game for the first time in a long time, and we had a nice chat about the game, and I got invited to join a group of people who are all getting into HotS at the same time.

Good to be reminded not everything on the internet has to be toxic!

The game was epic, though. In the end I was staring down a full board, at 5 HP, and pulled the literal only possible zombeast that could save me. Good ol' Bittertide Hydra + Stonetusk Boar for exact lethal.

yes

it's a local place that has 4 locations around town. their gimmick is country cookin'. they have a sign in the place that says something like "we don't have wifi. talk to each other. pretend it's 1989."

I just go and sit at the bar, where it's always open seating. The regulars there are on average 65+ and all go there like...4+ times per week. a couple of them are twice a day, 7 days a week.

it's a special kinda place

I'm sure this point has been argued ad nauseum on reddit and elsewhere, but it seems like "summon a 2/2" makes way more sense as an upgraded power than "summon two 1/1s"

What does that debate usually devolve into?

I'm exaggerating of course.

The concept of that deck just frustrates me. It's based on inflating value without spending cards. Since you can never know whether they have a card like level up or maul in their hand, the correct play seems to be to spend the whole game using cards to counter their hero power.

Every. turn.

Anyway whatever that's just the game I guess.

Warlocks killing themselves is always amusing. I just had a terrible draw against even warlock yet still won. This is the entire list of cards I played:

Explosive Trap
Hunter's Mark
Explosive Trap
Grievious Bite
Coin
Kathrena
Animal Companion
Dire Frenzy

With only those cards I had turn 8 lethal lol

I forgot to mention this the other day. So I was facing a warlock and he plays summoning portal and then immediately baleful bankers the summoning portal twice. I'm like "uhhhhmm, ok...wtf is about to happen here?" Then next turn he takes advantage of summoning portal to fill his board with phantom militia. Oh snap, that's kinda funny. I kill off about four of them, then he pandas one phantom militia and refills the board again. I'm like holy shit. Then next turn he pandas again and fills the board again.

I won the game, but it was pretty funny and I was surprised I hadn't seen that before.

Delivered by imp. From the Commonwealth.

I was not expecting that. At all. Fantastic.

All the party members had something to say about the message.

Best of all, Sir Gilman:

So far, to me, it seems like the idea is to just max out 2 characters, then repeatedly replace the third with whoever suits your fancy each time. I guess that depends on what you value (winning vs. story) and also how far along you are. But for now that's what I'm going with. Jodariel + Rukey + "flavor of the week"

Whenever I hear the common line "kids take up your whole life, but it's the greatest joy you can have", I often wonder if that's kind of a catch-22, since by having kids you by definition don't experience what adult life would be like if it wasn't all dedicated to them. And vice versa as well, I suppose.

Like you can't know what it's like to raise kids and also know what it's like to spend those 18-30 years not raising kids but just doing you.

As for me, it depends on the day as to whether or not I want kids.

Yes I started to realize the depth of the game after the first liberation, and I'm so very excited to play the rest now.

When I went back to the first area of the game for my 9th rite and Rukey and Jodariel had a conversation about how I chose her suggested path instead of his at the very beginning, I was like "ohhhh man this is just gonna get better and better"

You have a party of 8 or 9-ish and you choose 3 for each "battle". Each character has a dash, attack, and jump which are all somewhat unique. Controls are pretty basic. The game is heavily narrative-driven. You spend more time in the visual novel parts than the gameplay. I don't know what game to compare it to.

Please mark spoilers that are farther along in the game than my current progress.

Anyway, I bought it early this year, but only played the first rite and then stopped. I picked it up again last week, and I've played up through the first liberation rite and one more on the 2nd cycle.

I'm once again impressed by Supergiant games. Pyre is seamlessly good. I get sucked into advancing the story several times even after I've decided to quit. It comes in perfectly bite-sized chunks and is always compelling.

The gameplay is fun, too, and satisfying. I'm curious, do you unlock any difficulty option beyond Heightened? I'm having a blast so far, but I'm 9-0 on the highest difficulty and hoping for a little more. I can tell it's going to ramp up as I keep playing multiple cycles, but just curious.

My first time through, the team I settled into was Rukey, Jodariel, and Ti'zo. Rukey's speed and agility feels almost too easy. The first round in each rite is always a quick, virtually automatic goal by him. Then I try to fly one in with Ti'zo, and just implode their whole team if I get blocked, and play defense for a bit with Jodi.

I liberated Ti'zo first. My main three members were the only options, and he was the one I cared least about giving up in terms of the story.

I'll post more later. I just had to talk about this game because I've been enjoying the hell out of it.
