The **** happened to LA.. it was absolutely beautiful a decade ago.

Er, no it wasn't. My brother has been dead almost a decade now but before he croaked he was homeless most of his life in LA and Reno. In fact, LA's solution back then was to bus the homeless away (sent my brother to reno). They did give housing to some, and my brother eventually got on permanent disability and they paid for a place for him to live (after loosing some toes to frostbite, and developing elephantitice due to bad circulation).

Homelessness is certainly not a new problem, but it has increased and of course there is now the internet and better media coverage etc. Also your homeless population has probably evolved and now includes many people who have gone to college etc (which is sad all by itself).

Eventually they are probably going to start locking up the homeless to prevent them from vandalizing etc, which, if the numbers are still the same, is CRAZY cause it costs so much more to incarcerate someone then it would to just pay for them to have an apartment and food.

First of all, there is absolutely nothing wrong with being used, if you are choosing to be used, or aware of it and don't mind. A good friend will not just use you, but will also reciprocate and do things for you as well. A really good friendship means neither of you even care if the other uses them and are happy to help the friend in any way possible.

Second, MANY people do things without anything in return. I know, I know, your gonna say "oh they get a feeling of doing a good deed, or a sense of accomplishment etc" That is not always true, and actually to your point, often you are just used, and you know your being used, and your effort is even wasted as the person you help squanders it and doesn't accomplish anything from what you have given them. People STILL try and help, and make the world a better place. People spend time with the elderly, even though they have demntia and won't remember it, just to make a bit of their day happier. People work at soup kitchens and give out food at food drives and help people they will never meet. TONS of people do good things every day without any expectation of anything in return and many try hard to ensure nobody even knows about it.

So yes, there are many people out there who will use you, but cutting yourself off from everybody just because of that, well, it seems like a waste. There is so much joy that can be had interacting with others. Not just joy for you, but for them as well. You can be a good influence, you can help people be motivated, push them to try new things, make anything they are doing, work, learning etc, more enjoyable and less of a chore. You have the power to make the world a better place by the way you interact with others.

Don't let bad experiences stop you from being open to good ones. I can understand if you can't put yourself out there anymore, or have just given up, but honestly, it's worth it to keep trying, to find others to share this burden of life with and to make it lighter for them, and in the process lighter for yourself as well.

The costs can be high, especially when those you love suffer, or pass away, but even though I have suffered loss and miss some of them greatly, I am glad I had them in my life and made their lives as pleasant/happy as I could while they were alive.

Life can be hard, can keep kicking you, even when you are down and have been down for awhile. It can be hard to get up and keep trying and sometimes it takes awhile to pull yourself together enough to even try, but if you can, it can also get better. I hope you do try and find friends and maybe more again, I really believe it is worth it.

UBI should be a thing in my opinion. It is the right to each and every citizen of this country to reap the bounty of what is provided here. They do such things in other places (Alaska for instance, Indian Reservations (especially with casinos) etc.

A standard amount of money given to each American born in this country (or who has lived and worked here X amount of years, perhaps married to someone living here etc), makes sense.

I would further expand that though and ensure that resources are available to allow every citizen to survive on the UBI, ensuring that housing of some form is available for a fraction (less than half) of the amount provided. Said housing would not need to be luxurious, but should provide the means for the citizen to be safe and warm (or not cooked), feed themselves and have adequate resources to use the restroom and shower.

If we were Russia and there was a limit on resources, I could see why such a system might be controversial and could be argued against. We are not Russia, we live in a bountiful country with more then enough resources for everyone. There is no reason for people to go hungry, while we pay farmers not to plant crops and throw away tons of food every year, there is no reason for people to die because of lack of health care, there is no reason for people to live on the streets with no feeling of safety/security or privacy.

UBI is not the only solution, but it is a good one. Alternatively free housing provided for anyone who needs it (very basic, but totally free) could be another option. Better public transportation should be available as well (also totally free), make it insanely easy for anyone to both find a place to live, and get to a place to work from there.

If people can no longer work, for whatever reason, mental health, physical health, drug/alcohol addiction etc, don't just abandon them to the wolves, but provide a safe place for them and encourage them to get better, have hope, and try and get their lives back on track.

I've been working as a Home Care Aid recently and we are going to have SERIOUS trouble as more and more Americans become unable to care for themselves. It is already pretty horrible in many nursing homes etc, being elderly in the future may be quite unpleasant indeed if things don't change.

In theory we have the power to change things, if we stand up as a nation and say NO, WE WON'T ACCEPT THIS, something would eventually be done to make life better for those in need, and to provide some security that our lives will not fall into ruin if we get sick later in life, or as we get older and can no longer take care of ourself.

Alost ANYTHING that is suggested is made political and therefore has no chance of actually being done. Our country is constantly at war with itself and whichever party comes up with an idea, the other party will attack it with everything they have to ensure it doesn't work. We need to work together, come up with a viable solution that prevent millions of citizens from suffering now, and in the future.

Sadly the likelihood of that happening in an age of netflix and endless entertainment on the internet and now covid etc, is very small. I do think eventually pressure will increase and things will change, but not until many people have already suffered greatly for quite awhile.

Funny last week was my last one working. I was working as a home care aid, but they had me driving all the freaking over the place (over 300-400 miles a week), without compensating me for the travel/gas etc (only get gas/travel if between clients, not to or from clients etc).

Congrats on starting to work again!!! I missed this post last week or I woulda said PAAAAARRRRTAAAAAA!! Heheh:)

I don't know I've never had dots either. For someone who ended up with type 2 diabetes I pretty much never had candy except gummy bears sometimes, spice drops and peanut m*ms (but rarely). I drank a ton of soda though which was probably the culprit.

Actually they aren't jujubees they are jujyfruits....I couldn't find the bees, but i think they have the same flavors, and yes, they totally get stuck on your teeth (luckily I have alot of mini-brushes and those little floss sticks).

I have only eaten about 1 1/5th of a box so far, so i'm ...trying....to be conservative. They are so flavorfull I only need to eat 1 at a time. I particularly like the licorice ones and the green ones (Whatever flavor that is) though the red/cherry ones are also yum.

I only bought 5 because they had a sale by 5 for $5 and they are 1.89 each normally. I will....hopefully....only eat them slowly over a long time. It might even actually prevent me from having something else with more sugar due to it's high flavor content for such a small candy.

I can't by spice drops or jelly belly's because even though they are flavorful, I end up eating a bunch at a time. I literally get sick if I buy them and end upthrowing the rest away so I don't get sick again.

Have not had that problem with the jujubees (tho I do wish I coulda gotten the cute bee ones).

I have a bunch of stuff. Ignoring most of it seems to have worked (while making minor alterations to my lifestyle).

Was told about 5-6 years ago I had degenerative disk disease in my back. My wife had had surgery though where they fused her disk and it always caused her pain and limited her mobility, so I didn't do the surgery. Instead I always sleep on my side and I avoid standing or sitting for too long without stretching (2 hours or so). If I'm driving I stop and stretch every to hours etc. Back has not gone out now for over a year.

Was told I had cancer a few years ago (probably at least) and that I needed to go to Seattle for a Biopsy or something. Never did. Most of the symptoms have gone away though over time and I'm not dead (Lympathic system), glad I didn't go do those tests.

I do have type 2 diabetes and I take insulin for that, and I take 2 types of meds for high blood pressure, nothing I could do about either of them other than meds. I used to have horrid migrains until I took the high blood pressure meds so it's much better with them. The insulin did cause me to gain about 20 pounds but luckily I'm still in pretty good shape.

I generally avoid going to the doctor for anything. I did TRY and see mine to get hearing aids (I bought auiden hearing aids online but they cause a high pitch whine) but my doctor only wants to deal with my diabetes and ignores everything else (havn't gone since that visit after I was forced to change doctors due to my old place closing).

Would really like to get better hearing aids, but from what I hear even the co-pay is extreme for them.

I certainly wouldn't suggest the just ignore it all and never see a doctor method for most people, but it seems to mostly work for me for some reason.

I wouldn't normally, and i'm pretty sure I will hate it, but, since you post about them so much, I'll give one a try.

I need to find easier things to eat that don't suck. Maybe i'll like it.

My taste buds are dying, I don't enjoy food as much as I did. I may even be able to start just eating frozen dinners etc (ugh that is so sad).

Maybe a mozzerella + pizza hot pocket would actually be good.

Probably not the best choice for my diabetes though but everything in moderation. If it's good at least it'll be another option.

I am going to a meetup tomorrow at a pub (bar actually but I like pub better) to start socializing a bit again. I messaged first to make sure it was ok to NOT wear a mask while going since I have been vaccinated. They responded that it is up to each individual if they wear a mask or not, but most of them don't and have been vaccinated as well.

I'm still on the fence, but A: I just plain out can't freaking socialize wearing a mask for hours, especially while eating/drinking and B: I need to start interacting with people other then just at work.

So, I will probably go tomorrow (I often plan on going to something and then when it's time to actually go, am like, naaaah, I don't have the energy).

But hopefully I will go, and no, I don't plan on wearing a mask.

I have to live my life, and I am vaccinated. If you don't get vaccinated and get the virus, at this point it's on you. You have the option, if you don't do it and die, it was your choice.

I've mentioned on here before, but I graduated on my 16th birthday. My present from my mom was to be kicked out so she could rent my room to someone (which she got from section 8 based on both me and my brother living there (my brother had been in foster care for years by then).

Anyway I was...a bit traumatized....at the time, and due to living briefly with my aunt and uncle while my mom was in a mental institution, then being kicked out because my brother broke things, I didn't trust taking anything from other people. I never used a shelter or anything like that.

I lived on rooftops for a year till I turned 17 and could join the Air Force. I barely interacted with anyone at all. I read books, played nintendo at the kiosks at the mall, stayed up all night in dunkin donuts to read etc. I rented a storage locker for $50 a month to keep my clothes in etc. I used pools to swim/bath in and public restrooms.

It would have been very easy for me to keep that up, but my uncle (different one) got married and I forced myself to go to the wedding, which started me interacting with people again (even though the other uncle called me "roof boy" there in front of everyone which was not fun...he was a serious jerk back then).

Point is, once you get into that life, it can be REALLY hard to get out, even if your still young with tons of energy and many things in life to look forward to etc.

I can't even image being homeless after the age of 30 or 40.....and by my age or older, you probably just die eventually.

There are solutions that could work for everyone, and a positive solution that improves the homeless populations standard of living seems like a WAY better idea then just saying what they are doing is illegal and shooing them off.

This country shouldn't just be better than that, but it is criminal in my opinion that a land with so many resources treats it's citizens this way. We don't have to go full communism, or even socialism, but we should have a baseline of support for every citizen. Motivation to work and be productive can come in many other forms other than basic needs for survival, and that would drastically reduce our crime rates, number of people incarcerated, suicide rates etc.

How we just ignore these problems and live our lives like nobody is suffering, I honestly don't understand, but it seems to be an ability human beings have had throughout history.

Elliot did say he was being misgendered on the set of the third season. So... I'm more curious if there will be a fourth season at all, or what they're doing cast-wise. Keep in mind Vanya died in the comics at the end of the first big arc, and the show has deviated heavily from the comics in other ways as well.

Yeah, that was what I was getting at, but didn't mean to be disrespectful, I didn't even know he went by Elliot now. I like the show and would love to see more seasons, but I saw a picture of Elliot online awhile ago, and he looks SO different then he did in the show, I just couldn't see him playing the same character.

I'd expand on the above btw. Perhaps give EVERY tenant 6 free months, homless or not, which they can use at will (either at start, or later in case they loose a job/get sick etc) that way they are not kicked out on the street if something happens.

Also not all need to be that extreme, build those first, so EVERYONE can have a place, so focus on making as many as you can, until you start seeing vacancies, so some rooms are not being used.

THEN start building more full sized apartment complexes but still at affordable prices. Upgrades from the base units above (similar to some in Japan) but still extremely cheap to rent. These would have their own bathrooms (biggest deal) and possibly a small kitchen, similar to Studio apartments.

If you look for studio apartments in most areas you'll see there are almost none available, too much demand for them. So make a bunch in each area and rent em for double the other cost (so about $400 a month). With utilities/internet bringing that up to $500, that is STILL way within the means of someone on base SSI (which is around $1000 a month btw).

Not only would this save money on tons of other resources that are being used right now (jail, medical expenses for people using ER due to being homeless, police efforts and city efforts to clean up after homlessness etc), but it would, eventually, MAKE money for the government because they don't have to pay taxes etc, so all the "rent" is pure profit (other then maintanence). It may take a few years to pay for the initial cost of building it, but after that, it would actually generate a profit.

That would solve the homeless problem (also offer tons of jobs while doing it), possibly within the next 3-5 years.

I gave a mini-van to a friend (ex-roomate) who was homeless for awhile and had no where to live. He went to the LA area (his brother was near there) and said that it was very hard to sleep in the van over night there, because the police would come by and force you to move. There is a big homeless problem there, but it seems like they are making life difficult even for people who are not disrupting things.

In LA and The Bay Area etc, many people live in cars/vans etc because rent is so high, even while working. Live in a Van for $0 a month or pay over $2000 a month for a small 1 bedroom. Even if your making a salary of 30k+ a year, it's very tempting to live in a van there vs paying so much for rent.

The solution is simple, affordable housing. Make it available. I know, if affordable housing is available won't it just fill up and more and more people will move into the area and be homeless again?

Maybe if you just made a small amount, but go JAPAN on the problem and build TONS of VERY SMALL but VERY CHEAP affordable housing. Flats that are simply 1 room, no kitchen, no bathroom, simple room. Shared bathrooms on each floor, perhaps one for every 10 rooms (with 2-3 actual toilets, and 1 shower (probably have a sign up sheet for shower times).

Make each such building have a few thousand freaking rooms and rent em for CHEAP (Like $200/month + utilities). Internet can be shared between multiple rooms easily as well (so each pays like $5 for internet access).

Build a bunch of the Mofos so that every freaking US citizen can at least have a roof over their head.

If your homless, you get a FREE 6 months to stay there before having to pay any rent at all. Gives you a chance to get on your feat and start making some income.

IF your on SSI etc, you can easily afford to live there, eat, and pay for medications.

SIMPLE solution, wouldn't cost that much (much less than is being spent on police/jails/shelters etc for homeless right now). It would also help reduce the FREAKING INSANE RENTAL COSTS for the rest of us, since if you can rent a freaking room for $200, a 1 bedroom will probably no longer be $2000+.

At least that would do something positive. It wouldn't solve the entire problem (since some homeless are there because of mental issues etc), but it would be a good start.

Wasn't that a thing for awhile, like 20-30 years ago? Porn with actual plots/movies etc? I think they kinda started off with things like the Toxic Avenger and then esclalated to real porn. I don't really follow the industry so I don't know if that kept going, still is around or even really took off (Though I did see the Toxic Avenger and a few other movies like that). I always like sci-fi, fictional super hero shows etc and alot of that semi-crossed over in like the 80's and 90's.

Just imagining what kids can see on the internet now while they are developing is scary af. Seriously, do young boys think women are really like that? Do young girls believe they are supposed to act like that?

I'm pretty sure most teens have unrestricted access to the internet some place or another since you can access it from phones, laptops, ipads, libraries (don't think they censor libraries either as I've seen (VERY CREEPY) dudes watching porn at libraries before.

The internet came out after I was out of school (significantly after) so there was no massive amounts of porn etc online back then. I don't even know what it's like to go to school with other kids who have access to all the depraved stuff they show on those sites (I'm not a massive porn fan, and while not a prude, there is tons of porn that is a big turn off for me or goes way to far. If I had grown up with it everywhere though, I might be a very different person.

I do justify my existance and have had to my whole life?

Why?

Because since I was a kid I didn't really want to exist, so in order to do so, I needed to do something that made it seem worthwhile to me.

Therefore, I can justify my existence by reducing suffering in the world and making life better for as many people as I can. I figure that I'll die eventually anyway, and I feel that the time between then and now will seem to pass instantly (such that I will be at the end of my life and looking back eventually and it will seem like almost no time has passed), therefore, I should keep living and help prevent other people from suffering and help them enjoy life as much as I can.

It's not that hard to keep existing, and the good you can do far outweighs the effort required (in my opinion at least) so as long as I can continue to do good things and make this world better, I should continue to exist.

That is at least how I look at it.

I hate masks, I can't sleep facing a wall, and if I wear a mask more then 15 minutes it's hard to breathe. That being said I wear them all the time, it just makes it less likely I will go out and do stuff. I had to wear them for hours at a time for work recently and you all can poo poo it all you want. It was horrid.

I work with the elderly so it's neccesary, I'm not saying it isn't. That doesn't stop me from hating the freaking things. The news that we have to wear them again in public even though we are vaccinated is horrible to me. I was planning on taking a few trips (driving as I was still waiting for masks to not be needed on planes) but now I am going to cancel them.

I can't enjoy myself if I have to wear a mask everywhere. I'd rather be home alone without a mask, then out doing stuff with one on.

If wearing a mask is easy for you, and you barely notice, I am truly happy for you, and I wouldn't wish being as uncomfortable with a mask on as I am on anyone.

But yes, I hate wearing a mask, and if it's all in my head, I don't care, my head is screwed up I guess. If I could just wish away how I feel when wearing one i would in a second.

You would imagine they would come up with a compromise, like a mask that JUST covers the mouth, and filters anything you breathe out, but you can breathe in from your nose. Would stop foggy glass syndrome, and only be annoying when talking really.

Like, instead of making masks mandatory, make mouth covering/filters mandatory instead.

Maybe come up with a way for a mouth mask to actually change color if you have covid.....instant tests lol...that way you can just see if you have covid and not go out.

Maybe we could train doggos to detect people with covid like they do cancer etc, then just have doggos everywhere and we wouldn't need masks at all.
