Yeah, there is no way to really decide if things are discernible or not. We assume it is, because we get nowhere otherwise.
It's more complicated than this. "Discernable" and "scientifically discernable" are two radically different things. I don't think anyone would deny the usefulness of science, however.

He was just pointing out that science has a lot of practical benefits, like medicine. Was invoking premature birth a bit personal? Maybe. But warranted imo, given the ridiculous **** the other guy was spewing.
