Really? I never wanted an origin. I was perfectly fine with what we'd been told. Didn't know everyone else was demanding an origin though, I didn't see it brought up ever.
Maybe not demanded, but there's definitely a lot of people who wanted to know what the Reapers were. Because they'd be making the same accusations of bad writing and laziness if they didn't offer any reason for what exactly the Reapers are.
I mean, when you create Robotic Eldritch Abominations, people are going to be curious about what the hell they are.
