iirc, the angels had the biggest lead and dropped it, while the braves/sox had almost as big as a lead but needed to lose more games to drop out of the playoffs because the other teams weren't doing as well. Plus the Angels did it over a month and a half while the Sox/Braves did it over a much shorter time period.
Or something like that
so it's really a matter of perspective.
