No way. Brawl was an enormous commercial smash (pun unintended) that far outstripped Melee's own success. It's one of the highest selling games on the Wii, which means a lot when you consider both how high Wii and current generation software sales have gotten.
It also received better reviews and a highly similar fan reception. People really overestimate the vitriol it gets from hardcore Melee fans. It has its haters, but it's times like this when we need to remember that vocal minorities are just vocal minorities.
Now if you wanted to gauge which was considered to be better on "which has the least haters" then Melee might win.
