Episode opens with a depressed Tom waiting to die on the railroad tracks. Jerry remarks that this is for the best and that Tom will finally be happy, then proceeds to recount the events leading to this; Tom falls for some girl and does everything he can to try to win her over, selling everything he has and throwing himself into debt to buy her things, but Butch always one-ups him at every turn. Dejected Tom becomes an alcoholic before winding up in a gutter. When he sees Butch and the girl driving off with a "Just Married" sign, he's pushed over the edge and goes off to die.
Jerry remarks that it's unfortunate not everyone can have a girl like his...only for her to drive past after having married someone else. Jerry joins Tom on the tracks. As the train approaches, we fade to black. THE END
