It's easier to get into the groove when you haven't gone near the series in a long time. I played Emerald after five years of not touching the games and it was an absolute blast. Two years later and Diamond/Pearl didn't do as much for me.
Black/White are pretty damn good though. My favorites, most likely. HG/SS are good for a nostalgia rush if you played (and loved) Gold and Silver, but as games themselves they're pretty average.
