Also random thought: It has always creeped me out when writer's have their characters talk with them at the start of the chapter. I don't know why that is, but I can't recall anything good ever coming from someone who interacts with their characters in that way. It makes me just inch away from the story very slowly.
Yeah I always thought this was weird but just passed over it since I saw it so many times and thought maybe I was the weird one for thinking it was weird. >_>
