It's not really snaking that was the problem, it was the fact it was so effective. If you didn't snake, you were screwed. Even if you couldn't snake perfectly, you'd get a huge advantage over others in the right kart.
Snaking in Mario Kart Wii isn't as unbalanced. It's harder to do, and the boosts you get from it aren't as big, so it works. You can use it as an advantage, but it won't put you so far ahead from people who don't snake (that's what bikes are for.. >_>)
And DD had the best defense mechanics. You actually had to time it right to block incoming attacks, instead of just dragging stuff behind you for full protection without having to do anything. That's one thing I miss from every other Mario kart game.
