Old Swain would turn the ult on and dive into the fray, ignoring your damage and dishing out his own. He was someone who had to be cc'd and bursted down before he could go crazy. He could out sustain Morgana mid and such things made me mad. All in all he was rather balanced but people whined and complained so he's now in the large pile of useless champs at high levels of play along with Sivir, Mundo, tanky dps without gap closers, etc.
He wasn't balanced tbqh, but he needed MINOR nerfs, not the absolute demolishing he got. The problem was he barely had to build tanky to be able to survive anything while doing significant damage and being almost impossible to escape from.
