Does anyone know if generic npcs can add affinity links as well? I've been ignoring them as too much hassle.
Not directly, but you'll without doubt miss a lot if you don't talk to them all, and not just once but twice each. A huge amount of crucial information comes from the generics, since named NPCs usually talk about themselves rather than give you tips.
It really is RPG 101 though: Talk to everyone, until they repeat themselves, and do it again after every major plot development.
Also, I've never gotten any spoilers from NPCs so that's just bullcrap(or said by people who don't see obvious plot twists coming until they happen). There's a lot of interesting story-related info though, such as finding out that SPOILERS UP TO THE EVENTS ON PRISON ISLAND SPOILERS
