There's a maximum amount of economic and social inequity that can happen before social strife kicks in. How far do you think that envelope has been pushed
It can be pushed much, much, farther. Sparta was functional and orderly with 90% helots. Social strife happens much more when the oppressed has the power to resist, which is usually when they were not that badly oppressed in the first place. In America, it's happened twice in a major way, the American Revolution and the Civil War. In both cases, the rebels were not badly oppressed prior to the rebellion, so they had the ability to fight such a war.
