My answer:

Classic 1v1 Best Videogame character ever contest with a twist

When submitting a bracket, every unique user (so 1 per household/ip adress) gets to pick 6 characters:

A top 3 favorite characters and a top 3 least favorite characters.

Each character that you pick gets the following points:

A number one favorite character gets +4
number two +2
number three +1

least favorite number one -4
number two -2
number three -1

This gives each character in the contest a score over the total amount of brackets.

Based on these scores they are then sorted in certain "classes", that give certain starting advantages (but never have an extreme impact).

As a random example:
Say Alucard would face off vs Link. Alucard has 10 100 points and Link has -2000 points

10 000- 15 000 points class creates a starting advantage of 3000 votes
-1000 to -2000 points class creates a starting disadvantage of 750 votes.

Alucard would then start the poll with 3750 votes (this advantage would be announced at the start of each poll so you know it before you vote) while Link starts with 0 votes.

Flame away :).
