You need to be able to read the kanji to solve the mystery, unless you want to just guess at which one is the 'village'.
Also, you won't get the solution to the epitaph for ages. You get a big hint this episode, though; I'd go back and think about it after you get past that part. I'm pretty sure you haven't seen that part yet.
